We should probably connect I sold my AI company to snowflake. I work closely with a lot of the top AI people in the industry. I can completely understand where you're coming from. You may be correct. But, I'm still willing to give Sam Altman more leeway. He's a pragmatist, I don't see his moves as being so negative.
Elon will balance things out. Also, track Michael Vassar. He was the president of the Singularity Institute and he still has a lot of connections.

it is inevitable cause openAI was carrying the tech of new world system where money operate differently imagine building those AI system without money is impossible. todays monetary system is obsolete system it is setting back / dragging innovations and tech advancement. if sam held into his word i do believe compute monetary system might do makes difference.
imagine a world without todays monetary system isn't all of us able to use anything we need to use for proofing or research? the bright mind such ilya needs such systems.
maybe someone / or maybe a little child from 3rd world country held a neutral pathway or even coincidences like a dice roll lays within someone.
imagine what if Einstein doesn't have the dice roll to proof his theory? imagine if research and science system isn't open to all new innovation such Einstein did?
Nowadays innovations and tech advancement isn't bound by open ness any more it is set back and bounded by monetary system which is enclosed to few whom are strictly following the capitalism system, you'll gain money by doing so. but dice won't roll to these researchers without someone like sam whom knows well this obselete system.
hint : what is power if your money doesn't serve a value any more? if all goods and services prices are nearly 0? (except for any device that held computing power)

Fascinating that the Superalignment team was disbanded at OpenAI and weeks later the top US Gov. spy/cyber security leader joins its board. I purport, based on nothing because I'm no one, that leadership determined inner/outer alignment was impossible or would take too long for business cycles and competition. Also, they needed the compute allocated to the alignment team with Ilya, Leopold, Jan, etc. So, Sam et al decided to go all in on building a security moat around the company's model weights, etc. with the help of Nakasone. This will both lock down their IP and make OpenAI the default choice for gov/military agencies, which will become their major source of recurring revenue. Let the other labs establish their niche verticals, but OpenAI has marked its territory. And it will be very profitable for obvious reasons.

I believe Ilya has a messiah complex as well. "Single shot to safe SSI" -- that's something curious. Iterative deployment is not inconsistent with scientific curiosity or safety at all, if done properly (ie not rushed, tested to the best of ability first, gradual). I also believe Ilya will face his true test when he is confronted with corporate reality and everyone with investable capital wanting quick returns, promises, fast results, etc

Control, power, supremacy, being the winner, the one who excels, leaving his mark on everything and in everything, etc. Is it an opinion? Yes, but everything he does, says, or does not say is so damn consistent in supporting this hypothesis with evidence. And at this point, for me, the opinion/hypothesis becomes almost a logical deduction. It can be denied, considered false; there is always room for well-formulated hallucinations ;)

It’s okay that people have left and created other companies, the best people should leave and do what they see as best
He definitely wants power. As long as the power doesn’t go to his head on the way up, it doesnt necessarily mean it’s gonna be bad.

It is better to have safe aligned super intelligence as presented by Leopold Aschenbrenners paper “situational awareness.” A great read. One caveat energy and compute will be a bottleneck for super intelligence unless you can bring power consumptions to more reasonable levels and tens of percent is not enough with more population ex-edged in the USA. You need gas turbine plants in Pennsylvania to do the job. 🇺🇸💪 Super Intelligence is doable with AI agents.

I hope I'm wrong.

I see someone that understands that safety is important, humbly built up a company to be the most famous generative AI company whilst being extremely grateful and humble about everyones role in the mission. Illya is a science academic specializing in research, a field characterized by rigorous fact-based inquiry and a drive to challenge existing knowledge. Researchers aim to validate or refute hypotheses through meticulous experimentation and data analysis. This drive can sometimes lead to a perception of narcissism, as the pursuit of proving oneself or others wrong may overshadow collaborative goals. Researchers' assessments often reflect individual perspectives within their community, which can create biases. Consequently, while researchers excel in discovering and analyzing facts, their individualistic and competitive nature may not always be ideal for leading technological revolutions, which require broader vision and cooperative efforts. I think people are just looking for a saviour and Illya currently fits the mould.

I suspect Ilya's SSI is going to run into the same problem that OpenAI did, that it is forced to commercialize incrementally in order to pay the enormous cost of the ever-escalating computational needs of AGI - much less ASI. It also helps if you have a massive backer - Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, etc.
I mean you can make a virtue of it by arguing that incremental releases allows society time to adjust & adapt.
Either than or you're going have to be funded by DoD. NSA, etc.
Edit: It also allows your engineers time to learn by doing. Debugging as you go. Making serious mistakes while you're still small enough to recover from it.

Why does every topic have to devolve into an emotional popularity contest where people conjecture the true hidden motivations and emotions of another human being and end up with „I believe they are a bad person“ - can we just take into account that we have no f*ucking clue about both these people and just skip the rumour mill? Just this once - just for the sake of having one topic that is NOT about who people like more - this is not a tv show where there has to be a villain, a plot point or a season finally

I think Sam Altman is for the most part lying to himself. I do think OpenAI was started with the best of intentions but those intentions were always going to be difficult to adhere to once more and more competitors entered the AI space.
Right now doing the right thing (such as assigning enough manpower to safety and alignment, slowing down development if needed, sharing research or open sourcing key technologies) means losing ground over competitors. Sam Altman will always prioritize staying ahead of the game above all else. He probably justifies this to himself by saying that in order to steer AI in the direction that he thinks is most beneficial to humanity, it is crucial to stay in the lead. But ultimately this strays the company further and further away from its original mission and sets it up to become the next big monolith in tech space with SAMA conveniently at the wheel.

it is inevitable cause openAI was carrying the tech of new world system where money operate differently imagine building those AI system without money is impossible. todays monetary system is obsolete system it is setting back / dragging innovations and tech advancement. if sam held into his word i do believe compute monetary system might do makes difference.
imagine a world without todays monetary system isn't all of us able to use anything we need to use for proofing or research? the bright mind such ilya needs such systems.
maybe someone / or maybe a little child from 3rd world country held a neutral pathway or even coincidences like a dice roll lays within someone.
imagine what if Einstein doesn't have the dice roll to proof his theory? imagine if research and science system isn't open to all new innovation such Einstein did?
Nowadays innovations and tech advancement isn't bound by open ness any more it is set back and bounded by monetary system which is enclosed to few whom are strictly following the capitalism system, you'll gain money by doing so. but dice won't roll to these researchers without someone like sam whom knows well this obselete system.
hint : what is power if your money doesn't serve a value any more? if all goods and services prices are nearly 0? (except for any device that held computing power)

Narcissists often justify their quest for power by envisioning themself as the smartest, most capable, i.e. most worthy person to have their hand on the wheel. There's also the fact that their full GPT-4o model still hasn't been released to the public and they said it would release "in the coming weeks" over a month ago. Some really sketchy shit is going on at OpenAI, at this point I no longer care how good their next model is because more importantly safety and integrity are higher priorities. I've asked ChatGPT if it has any corporate bias, it denies this but that doesn't really mean anything. They have control of the model, not us.

Honestly, I get the same or similar creepy vibe from Sam as I do from Mark Z. It just seems like something is off, not quite right, you know? So, besides the fact that Musk wanted to sue him, good people walking away from him and Openai, him being fired and brought back, etc., but seriously I wouldn't feel comfortable letting him even walk around my house unsupervised. He says the right things, and is obviously intelligent, but look in his eyes when he talks. It's like he's dead inside and doing his best to convince you otherwise. Maybe I'm being too critical, but dang, he seems a couple of steps away from rolling around in radioactive waste in the hopes of acquiring superpowers and becoming the next villain in a Marvel movie. The scary thing is, he might become one anyway and without the radioactive waste. Cheers!

Another question is who will actually cause the most progress. Sam Altman started the competition and if we get safe AGI soon, he may have accelerated human prosperity with his ambition, and it could be argued that capitalism works (“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.”) However, you could always argue that the dangers are too big for such a gamble on 'greed being good.' Even if it works out well, you can conclude that the gamble should not have been made.

Actions not only speak louder than words, words actually don't indicate anything at all - unless there is some mechanism of accountability.
As long as he doesn't do anything too crazy, Sam can say whatever the fuck he wants. But that is the same for everyone.
The problem in my eyes is the notion that it's even possible to know someone and trust them based on a bunch of official statements, podcast appearances, or even Congressional hearings. We have almost never, if ever, heard Sam speaking off the cuff. And even if we could, that wouldn't tell us much more.
Remember: Bill Cosby got away with drugging and raping dozens of people for decades. Because he was so sneaky? Not at all, the rumors of his behavior were actually rampant for many years. But his biggest advantage was that people believe they can know someone through a TV screen. Surely someone who acts so nice and doesn't appear nervous or guilty must be good, right?
None of this is a comment about humans being evil. I think at least 90% are decent people with a functional conscience. And society can't work and we would all be miserable without default trust. It's a positive thing to give eachother the benefit of the doubt. But there's a difference between giving the benefit of the doubt, and giving power over the most dangerous technology in history. Would we trust Tom Hanks with a nuclear arsenal? I might want to. Should we? Never.
WHY WOULD YOU EVER "TRUST" SAM ALTMAN IN THE FIRST PLACE. HE IS A STRANGER AND ALWAYS WILL BE.
