In regards to how many of us have been indoctrinated into religion, my wife and I were eating lunch in a small quiet mediterranean restaurant one day on her work break when a large group of catholic middle school kids and chaperones came in to eat. We watched the looks on the patrons faces, most of them elderly, as they witnessed their quiet lunch out turning into would be chaos and chatter. After everyone ordered, one of the chaperones quieted the students in order to recite the Lords prayer together. So, 30 or so early teen kids began to recite the prayer. However, this was not just the short Our Father prayer that I had come to know. It was much longer, involving sin and inequity, among other fear based things that these kids were being made to say. We left after eating with an erie feeling of how these innocent children must view our creator as some mean judgemental figure that is looking to punish them if they step out of line. Really eye opening for both of us.
