great commentary; helps me understand this movie much better. Many things I missed like the brilliant composition dynamics in that shopping scene as it relates to the overall themes
THIS WAS AMAZING. I'd been racking my brain - I thought maybe it was a film about the woman who chooses family versus the one committed to her work or 'truth'. One is weak and dependent on her husband for support over even trivial matters like someone cancelling a cake order which she can't handle alone. While the other is totally sturdy and dedicated, and even living in a more brutally 'real world' (navigating with ease the sordidness of co-workers etc.). And indeed we end up even believing that the Gracie is broken somehow. But the clincher is the end when in fact all is turned on its head and we find out that all is not so black and white but full of as much depth as human feeling. The lone careerist doesn't have a one -up on the family woman. And when it is the lone woman who is an artist - her pursuit of her work and therefore 'art' and therefore 'truth' and all the sacrifices that have been made for it go up in a poof (I mean the end when she keeps asking for more takes because she feels like she's closer to the truth. But isn't - she has simply lived a life of deprivation and for nothing - her career is currently making slightly bad quality movies whose main premise isn't 'the truth'). OH I don't know. What I'm saying I find doesn't hold up as well as what you are saying in your essay - maybe films can offer up different analyses but no I think I have a lot of holes and have it all wrong. Anyway it's really wonderful to come across something the cuts through to the heart of what I care about in films, so thank you! WILL YOU PLEASE DO ONE FOR A DIFFERENT MAN????? 🙏
yes! it gave that 'soap opera scandal' feel; supposedly intentionally to unsettle viewers; anxiety because it went up to the line of 'being comedic' but then pulls back
At least this movie is the proof that Natalie Portman had become a real actress now after she became older. In her youth, she was just a peace of wood with legs. Now, she can earn her many awards with real acting and not just with sensationalism.
This is such a shallow analysis of this movie and of acting as an art form. If cinema to you is selling a product that is fake, why even bother making it the topic of your video essays? Go review gadgets or toys instead.

The conclusion was heavy, loved it
Elizabeth took herself so seriously as a method actress and it just turned out to be a tacky made for TV movie
