- Christmas 1999: English conductor John Eliot Gardiner starts off on an extraordinary musical journey. With his Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists he plans to perform the entire body of Johann Sebastian Bach's church cantatas in the year 2000. Bach wrote special cantatas for each sunday and festival day in the church calendar. Gardiner's aim is to perform them on precisely these days.

Fantastic documentary
THANKS A LOT MAESTRO GARDINER
Dankeschön für dieses Dokument. Ich war bei der Aufführung in Altenburg dabei. Eine meiner schönsten Erlebnisse.
From Germany living in the US near Washington D.C. Took the bus to work this morning listening to Bach on my iphone. The Bus driver asked me what I was listening too. I replied Bach. He said: "who is that". I almost fell on the floor.
I live in the Washington DC area and when I catch the bus I am always listening to Bach. Given the lockdown, I haven't caught the bus in a long time, but still, I'm listening to Bach.
Thank you, from the cradle of human creativity, for a life force like Johann Sebastian Bach and for an interpreter like Maestro John Eliot Gardiner and the remarkable artists who make this timeless music come alive in the present as it did in the past. What a gift to the ages.
Sir John Eliot Gardiner deserves a Nobel prize, one specially created for him. He is a conductor sui generis.
Que Gran Director, es un Bach lover, me encanta el coro inicial del oratorio de Navidad, esta lleno de expresividad y energia y ademas unas armonias unicas en Bach.
18:35 ish is fantastic! John Eliot’s statement and then whooosh the opening chorus of 248/5. Like saying “you can do it in a lot of ways but this is how it’s done properly”. BRILLIANT!
John Eliot Gardiner is a genius.
A wonderful pilgrimage for the musicians. This is truly amazing and awe inspiring. Thank you to everyone for this fantastic project. And the music - such a treat!:-)
My beloved recording! Sir John Eliot is my mentor! ❤️
There is no better conductor!! Fully agree!
I listen to this performance of the Oratorium every year beginning to end. I am so glad to have just found this video about how they did it.
Wonderful- see also great documentary, "Bach A Passionate Life" I have the pleasure of owning the complete set of CDs
Me too
Fantastic !
Great Documentary.
