We got evacuated from Jasper last week, Monday. Stuck in the Evacuation traffic jam for 3 hours. Finally got to our destination in BC at 4am. They ran out of beds. We pushed chairs together to make beds. Next day, Banff. They also had no space for us.
30% of the town burned. Milaigne Lake Lodge burned down, some business, a historic white church burned down, and it looks like also the library.
    There were 400ft flames.
Controlled burns of deadwood was outlawed, and we had pine beetles. There was lightning with no rain, dry ground, and strong winds.
We went from slightly smokey to ash raining from the sky in mere hours. I am safe. No one got hurt.
Wildfire prevention program had its budget slash before this, also firefighters had their funds cut too.
A ridiculous amount of Alberta is on fire. BC is unfortunately used to being on fire, but Alberta is not.
We are currently waiting to hear when we can go back to town.
    Edit to add:
The Firefighting team is doing amazing. This fire easily could have done much worse damage. Some of the fighters had to watch their own houses burn as they fought to save important buildings. 😢 I could only imagine...

@@natashac.m.8088 I’m hoping that cost is workable for your family members, and if so, I’m glad that your loved ones are getting what they need.
I have a family member who needed home care 24 hrs, then 12 hrs/day after a hospital stay. That’s what it cost. She can’t afford any more than 4 hrs a day help now, needs more and more help (it really should be 24 hrs) and is on a waitlist for a spot in a nursing home. I called a newer home I heard of close to where she lives and they have no subsidized rooms, only private care. The $15,000 plus was their base price, with add-ons for nearly every additional service required. (This was consistent with the place she thought she might want to go, that we had looked into before it was needed.)
I can also say she makes nowhere near $4200/month, if she were to be able to find adequate care for that amount. I don’t know what amount of money kids think all these “wealthy” seniors have access to.

Rent is stupid expensive in Canada and yes it is legal to evict people from the place they are living sighting personal use as in the owner landlord is moving in or for a family member.
This is why I am living on my sailboat.
Much of this is a ploy to raise the rent by having the family member live there for a year so after the year sometimes less sometimes the family member doesn't even move in basically a scam. It is as I said a ploy to get people out do some minor updates the raise the rent, this is totally illegal but rarely caught or reported.

What always irked me is that I still pay school taxes as a senior. First, I never had kids but can understand contributing to education. However, once I retired on a pension income, why am I still paying for other peoples' kids. Many seniors barely get by yet are paying school taxes for kids from families that make over $100,000. I barely made half that in my lifetime of working 40 years and lived on my single income all my life. Heating, food, electricity, taxes and many expenses are the same or more for seniors. As far as housing, seniors are expected to be satisfied living in an apartment or condo....or a seniors' complex because they can no longer afford or manage upkeep of their own home. All the homes being built are McMansions that no single either needs nor can afford.

Jasper burning down is a huge deal. My son and wife were out on holidays for a week and left the day before. All the trails they were on are gone. When they were there about 40 k ppl were there. When he left 20k were leaving. When ppl visit Jasper majority of ppl are out on trails first thing and come back at supper. About 12.5 thousand of the 20k tourists were out in lakes, on mountains, on trails. Then the fires started and many were trapped coming back. Rescues were huge.
Jasper is a magical place for anyone that visits. Ppl all over the world come there. Many celebs and royalty have stayed. It is where generations come back over and over. The mountain town has an amazing community of residents of close to 5000. Add 20k ppl from all over and thats about a city of ppl being rescued from all over. Ppl were jumping in rivers and lakes with wildlife to escape a wall of fire between 300 - 400 feet tall. Then the ash falling too. Many trail horse and ranch horses set free and trailered out. Over 80 plus trailered. It was a huge operation to rescue.
Jasoer has an amazing atmosphere like no other place in the world and one of the most beautiful in the world too. Winter is skiing and snowboarding and one of the best in the world.
Jasper fires are a huge loss. I havent stopped crying and feel so bad for the residents who lost their homes and businesses. I doubt skiing will happen for awhile because the trees are burned down which will make it very avalanche risky.

One Canadian senior here to tell you that, as a pensioner, I am decidedly NOT wealthier than ever! The price of most of my groceries have almost doubled, but my pension has NOT gone up in a commensurate way. A flat of regular pork steaks is about $17. !!! A pound of salted butter is almost $8.00 !!! I just did my monthly shopping. It cost about $350. just to keep me and my dog from starvation for the next month. I still have to pay for power, phone and internet AND I have to pay for transportation and other incidentals! I am definitely NOT rolling in the dough. Of course seniors discounts are still needed. I would like to have enough money to get a hair cut and perm, and get my dog groomed once a year. But this is the life of a senior citizen under Trudeau's "benevolent" government!

When the heck did that happen? We're in a tiny (~2,000 people) rural Alberta town so it's not even like we have the ability to shop around, there's only one grocery store here. I can't imagine trying to only live on CPP as many do :(

Not really. I went through this. I rented half my house for extra money and when I got married I wanted the whole house so if you don’t plan on renting it again you can evict. It’s also not surprising if you had a rental property and set rent. You can’t just up peoples rent by law so when interest rates went up the landlord are losing money. So will evict and live in the place instead. Why it’s important to get into a home and not rent

As someone who lives in the Okanagan Valley in BC, the wildfires are crazy. Last year I nearly lost my entire neighborhood to the West Kelowna wildfire that was literally on the other side of the mountain where I live. I was also evacuated back in 2014 or 2015, can’t remember, and was on evacuation alert for several others over the years. I also have family in Alberta. Some live in Jasper, unfortunately their house was part of the 1/3 that get destroyed. Fortunately they are all safe.
If you want to read some more crazy wildlife news, look up the 2003 Kelowna wildfire and 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. Those two were some of the biggest wildfires in Canadian History.
S.N.: I’m born 2001, and was visiting my grandparents in Alberta at the time. So I don’t know much about the 2003 Kelowna fire. But my mom got a nice fire relief fundraiser shirt to help support those who were affected by it. My Family also got shirts for the 2023 one as well.

The story about senior discounts takes on a different perspective to an accountant like me. They were always about profits, not helping seniors.
When deciding prices, companies in perfect competition choose a price where demand equals supply. But that leaves areas where there is still supply that they can make profit on. They analyze who would most likely be willing to pay a lower price but not full price then offer a discount to that group, usually seniors. In a monopoly the regular price is chosen slightly differently but the discount is chosen the same way

Ontario has rent control. If your unit was built before 2018, your landlord can only raise your rent by the amount the government dictates (currently 2.5%). The landlord in this case, has given his tenants two months notice that he wants to move a family member into their unit. This is happening more often because tenants who have been living in the same unit for several years are likely paying less than half the rent that the landlord could get if he could rent to new tenants. Your annual rent increase is limited while you live their, but once you move out, a new tenant can be charged market rent.
In units created after 2018, this isn't an issue because the landlord can increase your rent once per year to market rent.
This is only going to get worse as many small landlords are selling their condos, houses, and semis. The people buying them want to live their themselves reducing the number of rentals in the province.

Tyler, you should look more into the tracker who found the missing horse in your ‘Crazy Journey’ story. He’s an interesting dude. He’s also been a search and rescue volunteer. His name is Terry Grant, and he was on a hugely successful show called Man Tracker. It was a contest where a pair of people would set out from a drop point, and have to navigate to a finish line. But in between was always some very rugged landscapes in the US and Canada. After the couple gets a head start, Terry (Man Tracker) sets out on his horse from a different point, and he has to catch them. They can do almost anything to hide their tracks, disguise themselves, and generally fool him. He’s very good, and caught most contestants before they’d make it to the finish line. You would probably find the show interesting to react to. He lives about 20 mins from me. Really nice guy, but he’s scary on the show. Lol.

It’s a common landlord scam to claim that the tenants need to move because the landlord wants to move family in. Then the landlord doesn’t move family in and re-rents the suite at an inflated rate. It is legal to evict for “own use” of the landlord or their family. BUT Under the law, landlord must live in the property for six months or the “own use” eviction is illegal and the tenants can sue for a year’s (?) amount of rent.

Own use evictions is where a landlord says they need the property back for their own use, either the landlord wants to move in or a relative. It depends on where you live as to how much notice they have to give but it is legal to evict people so that you can move in. The thing is, some landlords evict and then "change their mind" and re-rent - and THAT is illegal. The reason is that in many areas [not sure if everywhere, but a lot of places] there is a cap on rent increases - for example, here in Vancouver where I live, the rent can only be increased once a year and it is limited to the annual rate of inflation. So people who have lived there for many years end up with much lower rent than the average. Like, if I moved out of where I am, the apartment would then be rented at about triple what I am paying.

Own-use evictions happen when the landlord wants to move into their own property and therefore have to evict the current tenants. Some landlords might use this as an excuse to kick lower-paying (than market rent) tenants out, which is against the law (many provinces have laws that favour tenants over owners, Alberta is one of the few that has more favourable laws for owners).
It's one of those things that has to be tracked on a situation by situation basis, since there will be plenty of landlords currently feeling the pressures of multiple mortgages and genuinely have a need to move into previously rented places. But there are always those who try to get away with breaking the rules in order to have higher cash flow.
One thing to note is that the banks in Canada are bracing for troubling times. The mortgages from the pandemic are coming due (2, 3 and 5 year terms are common here), when many people moved out of the city centers and also refinanced at MUCH lower interest rates. The interest rates have gone up a lot, and with them, the new payments will be far higher and harder for people to cover.
