    To be fair you can pull the metal supports for the two bottom disks with two screws and put the disks on them without the drive holders. Just use the holes on the back of the disk, not the sides. But I agree, two bits of plastic wouldn't have added anything noticeable to the cost of the machine yet would make the package more appealing.

    one note: the T40 lower two hard drive mounts don’t use a blue sled type mount. Only the vertical 3.5inch mount uses a plastic insert.
    I have a Dell XPS 8930 that uses the same case as the T40. My XPS came with a hard drive one of the bottom bays. The hard drive screws into the metal cage with the old school style 4 screws from the sides of the HDD cage. You are able to reach these screws by taking out a drive cage by undoing the two screws holding each of the two cages to the larger case. So they did not jip you are two mount as it appears. Also my case came with an empty sled in the top HDD mount.

Edit: It's Icy Dock MB511SPO-B. Just be careful and watch what you're buying, because early versions of this adapter do not use standard slim SATA power plug, but Berg 4-pin floppy connector (!).

    FYI on the M.2 slot, on the T30 Dell disabled the M.2 slot for newer bios after 1.02 (I think). Dell gave no reason for this, just that it wasn't "part of the spec". As a 30 yo, I know what PCI is and built a PC a few years back to use a wireless card on PCI. As for the T40, this is just a workstation that Dell recycled the motherboard and case. A server needs front 4+ HDDs, RAID, and 2+ network ports. Out of band management is necessary for corporations and multi-office networks only (homes don't necessarily need it). As a server, the T40 is not one. As a remote render/remote processing system, this can do BUT someone looking for a remote render/remote processing system should get a used medium end gaming system and offload their video encoding/photo processing/Folding@Home onto that. Overall, the T40 makes no sense as it is a regular computer and not a "server".

    I have been looking at this as a workstation to install Arch or a Debian Linux system on. I currently have an old 2011 i5 Dell laptop that runs Ubuntu 18.04 but I've been thinking it may become my backup system or travel computer. I currently use this laptop to edit and render videos. I render about 45 minutes of video a week. I need storage but want something that will handle the processing load. I am not a gamer. Is this a good fit? Other recommendations? I like this price point and the specs on the memory upgrade ability. My laptop only supports up to 8Gb DDR3 1333.

    Optical drive is very important.
    Some tech company wants to keep workstations out of network and use CAD to design something or backup daily updates which
    no one can create them back or take very long time, they use DVDs to store them, since the tape drive is no longer fast or capable.
    Please keep an optical drive for these purposes, I beg.

    Delightful! Minute 3: the T40 Quick Start Guide. I had to laugh aloud! I have now the 5820 Xeon Workstation, and the Quick Start Guide is also the "Dell Hardware Users Manual Standard":
    Plug in that power cord!
    Press the button!
    You done, already runs that big workstation with all these carriers, boards and mysterious features on the motherboard. Of course I failed the IQ test and failed to remove the bezel to the hard drive bays. I had to call Dell, open a "customer service case." The solution was simple really: To protect the bays from access one needs to open the side panel and press a hardware unlock button located inside. Hm... that would be an item for the Quick Start Guide, I would think. Later I failed to remove the 2.5" drive spacer from the HDD carrier. That thing is like a puzzle of sorts, I did not wanted to break anything and opened another Dell support case. My body showed me around 11pm on zoom session how to do that. I am sure that T40 guide has a similar list of misses and faults.

    You explained well what Dell T40 is all about. But you are really downplaying this only thinking of the actual hardware and comparing it to expensive systems. Last 8yrs years, I have set up over 125, Dell T20, T30, T40 Servers in small businesses (Medical, Dental centres, small offices, etc). These businesses need small servers for their client-server software. They NEVER EVER fail. Run 24x7 for last so many years. I only did change harddisks to SSDs. Has Intel KVM (vPro) backend access too (similar to iDRAC). Yes, they are not German Mercedes grade but maybe reliable/vale for money Toyota level. I have used very expensive big Dell Serves in my last job. Trust me, they fail too - big expensive failures. So for small business without very heavy processing, these are extremely reliable and value for money systems.

    That's silly no hdd caddys, the old dell's have them by default (this system seems lore like a workstation)

    these Precision rebranded PowerEdge's have given me a bad taste in my (used) experience setting them up for clients..
    A T30 has 4 HDD bays, and it had an M.2 slot from being based on a Precision Board, but Dell disabled it via bios updates (Major dick move imho). but it at least had 4 HDD bays which I consider the minimum to be useful (even if you use a mirror/raid1, what are you going to do when you want to migrate to bigger disks?)
    this T40 seems like it continues the trend of slapping names onto boxes without any regard to actual use.

    Incorrect. If you were to actually look/check, instead of exaggerate, you will see that you CAN mount the HDs to the metal cages with screws on the bottom of the HD!

      Does anybody know if this uses the exact same motherboard as the workstation?
      This server isn't made to be a pro server, I believe it's more for small business applications such as document or medical record management systems which need a common server.

    • @ServeTheHomeVideo
      @ServeTheHomeVideo 3 роки тому +1

      I think it is actually the 3630 motherboard but there are some strange bits such as our M.2 slot not working which make me think there are some differences. You could use this as an inexpensive workstation without much issue.

  • @garyd7890

    oddly.. i bought one of these today partially because it had a PCI slot (for a genuine hardware parallel port card) and a serial port. We have old zund cutting machines that need a (real) parallel port for a software dongle and a serial port to drive the thing........ The things run linux, virtualising windows 98 and win2k (due to needing some seriously old software that works like a champ driving machines used all day 5 days a week for the last 22 years).... Yeah... get off my lawn Damn kids !

      What about a single AMD EPYC 7702P server? Only one CPU in that configuration. You are right that this is pushing it from a traditional server aspect carrying the "PowerEdge" brand.

    • @myadventures8
      @myadventures8 3 роки тому

      ServeTheHomeVideo but do you see the price point ? That’s along the line or server status. However still needs more integration features. I guess nowadays anything can be called a server 🤷🏻‍♂️
