NHRA banned the Dodge Colts from Pro Stock because they were made in Japan. This put Mopar behind the 8 ball for years until Glidden's Plymouth Arrow in the late 70s.

Awesome...absolutely awesome!! I follow the NHRA races, and I enjoy whenever the Pro Stock cars are at the line. There's no denying that the technology on these cars have come a long way since the early days of the class, however there was a certain magic to leaving the line without the aid of an MSD 2-Step Rev Limiter, as well as testing the starting line with the dry hops. Additionally these cars looked exactly like their street counterparts, and weren't bound by paint jobs that just showcased their sponsors. Thank you Reher Morrison Shepherd, Bill Jenkins, Warren Johnson, Bob Glidden, Frank Iaconio, Sox & Martin, Arlen Vanke, Butch Leal, Gapp & Roush, and all of the other drivers, owners, and crews, as well as the guys (and girls) responsible for the tribute cars and for keeping the 'Old Days' alive for the fans!!

I'm feeling that these Older Cars are saving the hyde of these National Events, and it would be a scene to see these Older Cars at newer venues, namely National Events that haven't seen these cars.

Thanks for posting. Being the Camaro fan I am I noticed the Reher and Morrison car had a 77 or older body with the 78 or newer front end and tail lights. Such memories. Looking forward to seeing more of these videos.

my son built the Reher&Morrison car that Lee Shephard was killed driving (with no seat belts) he worked at Alston Engineering at the time. Lee was making some checkout passes - lost it and with no seat belts sadly killed- great driver a moment of inattention and he's gone. RIP Lee Shephard

I wonder what motors most are using. Example the AMC, it must be hell finding parts. It would be interesting to know. I really miss old school drag racing. It was much more competitive and the average Joe could race the guys with money.

I wrote the pro stock rules for NHRA in 1981- the big change was to allow cars to have alum firewalls and lexan windshields, NHRA was losing prostock cars to AHRA who allowed alum firewalls and lexan windshields when NHRA still demanded OEM windshields and steel firewalls. I also told them to stop factoring weight for the cars -every time a Ford or Mopar was faster GM cried and the Ford/Mopars had to carry ballast till the GM cars won again AHRA cars were faster and that's where racers want to race. I then made the rest of the rules for 500 CID max,2350 lbs car and driver, -2 x 4 bbl carbs ,gasoline and 4 speed trans, they changed for a while to lenco's then back to manual shifted transmissions although the Jericho trans needs no clutch to shift. . still kinda irked over that- NHRA asked for help,I gave it to them did they ever say thanks or give me credit for the rules that made the closest racing in drags ? (no).

I'd normally complain about the automatics, but if the automatics allow for consistent runs, I'll take a slight loss in semantics over seeing the cars being able to make multiple runs without breaking something, missed shifts, etc, etc.
Beyond that, yes, I'd love to see a manual every now and then, but since this is all for the sake of putting on a show for paying fans, yeah, I'll begrudge them the automatic transmission.
