When Your Cat Tells You You're Wrong...and They're Right!

- Todd starts off by making a multi-word request for his Whirly toy. After he has finished with his Whirly he asked for his Evening Mousey. I was in the middle of an important email and told Todd I would give it to him soon. He was fine with that and waited. Soon means I will give him what he asked for within 15 minutes. After about 20 minutes he let me know he was mad and gave me his stink face for emphasis. Lol.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 36 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

Todd is expanding his talking to more than just one word at a time. Dad, Todd, Soon, Whirly! Awesome! 👍👍👏👏
😊
Respect to you,Dad,for not laughing, it matters to Todd. ❤
I know it does. Todd does not like it.
That is one smart cat. Amazing to see him making sentances!
Yes, he is regularly making 3 or 4 word sentences and I am almost positive he is using his front and back feet to push the buttons now. He continues to amaze me.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks A true scholar.
Well constructed sentences
It's very interesting how he chooses to use words he wouldnt actually even need to make sentences, like he could just have said mousey and not evening mousey but perhaps he wants to be sure that you understand, like he wanted to remind you what time of day it is.
I just adore Todd and dad you are so good with him. Todd deserves a degree maybe Dr. Todd. He’s so smart and so loved💕
Aww, thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoy Todd.
Lol, leaving adequate response time can be a significant problem for teachers of human critters, too.
I know when I've done it too, he will give me the look. 😊
Apparently that's part of why people have terrible twos with their toddlers. Because they think they're toddlers can keep up mentally since they are talking. But it actually takes them like 30 seconds to process things still.
@@zzzcocopepe yep! But it frequently continues through puberty and can continue lifelong. This is covered in (some) developmental psych courses for teachers. It's also very common with autistic and other neurodivergent kids and can cause us to be evaluated as less academically capable than we really are. Often the "slow" kids are very literally just SLOW. And communication a two-part process, and either or both can slow response time. The first is auditory, processing the sounds the other person made and figuring out what they meant. The second part is coming up with your answer and stringing words together to respond, then actually making the physical movements to produce the response. Human brains get hung up on all those finicky bits all the time, and we're wired for verbal communication! Cats going through these processed is nothing short of amazing.
I'm planning to start the buttons with mine soon. They already understand complex ideas like "I'll be back soon. Teddy can play ribbon when I get back, okay?" Buddy ran to get his ribbon the moment I came in the door! I'm eager to see whether his destructive behavior cools off some if he can tell me what he wants.
I love that disappointed expression 😂😂😂
That is what made me decide to try the buttons, he is the most expressive cat I have ever seen. I figured if he will do all that to let me know what he wants and how he feels he should want to use the buttons.
I think thats the first time I've seen Todd use the "Mad" button.
To be fair, I haven't seen every video, but he seems to use it rarely.
❤
He uses it but you are correct, it is pushed rarely. I travel a lot for my job and most of the time he says it is when he sees me pull out my suitcase. He knows I'm going to be going and he's unhappy about it.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks 😭😭😭
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksthat’d be heartbreaking to witness.
Oh my, his mad face is so cute! hehe You were late by only 5 minutes and he knew!
I'm sure he knew at one minute but was giving me a chance not to disappoint him. Lol
They seem to have a built in sense of time and won't let you forget it if you're even a minute late! Love that gorgeous boy! Hope you all have a nice 4th!
They do have a very good sense of time. Thank you and I hope you have a great 4th as well!
Adorable
Thank you!
Even when he looks mad, he is very beautiful! 😊❤ I want to cuddle with him but regrettably it is a little to far from the Netherlands😂
That would be a little far. 😊
Very important to stick to the schedule! :)
He know what soon means and holds me to it.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksThat blows my mind!
Great Cat medicine .Todd hasn't misjudged his relationship he knows to Never, Never, Never Give Up.
😊
Since I have discovered your channel, I do speak differently to my cats.
They understand far more than we give them credit for. 😊
❤❤❤❤ Todd is very smart. "Mad" it's probably hard not to laugh because he is so adorable.
I can handle the mad button but the mad face makes it very hard not to laugh. I do my best because I know he is serious and it may hurt his feeling if I laugh.
I very much appreciate that you included the mad face for us. That looks to me like he's saying a few different uncomplimentary things with the ears, the whiskers, the eyes. Adorable/hilarious.
I had to share it and it still doesn't do it justice. It is so hard not to laugh when he does it but I know it would hurt his feelings.
Multiword sentences, with nouns and a time component. Todd is now doing stuff with words that Billie does at her best, and learned it in 1/4 the time. Amazing.
Thank you so much! Billi is still amazing; she is the reason Todd and I started this. Todd is also 9 years younger than Billi.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Wise man, shutting down fanwars the moment they start.
Billi also has more buttons to manage than Todd (for now) but I like watching both cats grow and learn (as well as a few others).
Todd definitely seems to be extremely intelligent and learn fast but it probably has to with that he's very curious and really wants to learn.
Dogs have owners, cats have staff😂
I love my Todd videos, adorable as always
Aww, thank you. We're glad you are here!
What a handsome boy ❤
Thank you
Absolutely love Todd
Thanks for sharing
You bet!
This boy is so smart and it is thanks to dad :)
I can't take credit; he is an amazingly smart cat.
So funny! Todd got you! I can't stop smiling
I'm so gad you enjoyed it!
This is so cool. He really is communicating so well.
Thank You
Of all things to forget! The very important mousey. Because they wait so actively I'm sure it feels very long to them. Sometimes my guy is exhausted from waiting all day for something and trying to persuade me to let it happen earlier. He's button free, but knows how to get his point across. 🤣
Yes, they know how to let us know what they want.
This feels so similar to when my toddler tells me I made her Mad! lol Both she and Todd have adorable disappointed mad faces too :D I love your videos.
I often refer to him as a "Todd-ler" when he is having a tantrum and mashing the buttons 7 times in a row because I said no or he has to wait. Lol. I'm so glad you enjoy the videos and I'm glad you are here.
Omgosh that's hilarious!
Todd is adorable
Aww, thank you!
"Father, how much longer must I wait for the damned mouse!? UGH, the incompetence!"
Lol 🤣
LMAO i love how incredibly punctual cats are with their internal clocks. my cats get dry food at 6am and 8pm and wet food at 5pm and heaven forbid i try to sleep in on a weekend or get home late from work because they will LET ME KNOW this is going on my annual review 🤣
Lol 😆
Todd mad! Todd get mousey! Todd and Mousey smash!
Lol
😂❤ adorable Todd even when mad.
Thank you!
Aaaaah my heart!! ❤😂
Such a bright c kitty is able to keep up with the time and what he’s to get
Thank you!
OMG the mad face 😹😹😹🐆
Lol
That "mad" face has something of a "I'm so disappointed in you" look about it. 😉
Yes, and he does it so well. Lol
Such a good guardian! We all make mistakes and you made it up to him when you realized.❤
Thank you.
Oh my gosh his mad face is so cute! 😅❤
I love the cat language accentuating his human words. He's so ready to go tell you he's mad. And it's amazing what an awesome planner he is. Todd is on top of all his activities and demands punctuality.
He'd make a great CEO.
Thank you!
Gotta get ya a picture of my Oreo..they look so much alike its uncanny!!!
I would love to see Oreo!
I also want to say that you are awsome with your cats...Todd communicates so well because of you. You love them and take good care of them and they feel safe and loved. Why can't there be more people like you in the world? ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Aww, thank you so much.
Mad Todd looks so sweet. Does he hit the ground with his tail if he is mad, too?
It twitches a little, but he doesn't slap it like some cats do. Glamour stomps her back foot. IF you go back through the videos towards the beginning there is one called Glamour Is Not Amused. It was the first day the buttons were installed and Glamour went and looked at them and stomped her foot. Lol
I'm glad my feed is bringing up Todd vids I've missed.
I'm sorry they are not showing up in your feed. You can also go directly to his channel and see everything.
Our feline overlords run a tight ship with rigid schedules. Imagine forgetting “mousey”, Dad! That probably counts as a cardinal sin to Todd. I hope he forgave you later after you withered in shame at Todd’s “mad” face and rectified the situation.
He was right though, I taught him soon is within 15 minutes. LOL
Yes, I saw a look like that yesterday on a hungry (waiting) cat when the other cat used her scratcher. Kind of a hangry look. He’s even cute when he’s mad.
Thank you!
Wow im I the only one who think Todd is very concise...the way he uses words...its so clear and purposeful.
Im so blown away to know his thoughts...they are not very different from a child. ❤
I agree, I find it amazing watching how his mind works. The way he uses multiple words to tell me what he wants shows he truly understands the meaning and concepts.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks yes and give yourself credit for how you speak to them and how you listen when they speak to you! Its so nice to know you're their Papa... I really enjoy your channel and I learn a lot. They are wonderful cats!
well at least he is trying & touches & attempts so A+ in my book job well done! keep up the good work!
Thank you
Such a smart baby ^_^
Thank you so much!
Oh my goodness, Todd knows how long it feels for fifteen minutes to pass???????? 😮
Yes. Cats and dogs both have very good internal clocks. If you feed them at a certain time or they get their treats at a certain time they know when you are supposed to do it. Todd knows Now is now, Soon is 15 minutes or less and Later is longer than 15 minutes.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalkschickens are like that too! Very underrated animals they are.
Billi has this knack too. She once reminded her mom that the 15 minute time frame of "soon" is over now after 16 minutes.
It's awesome what those animals can do.
They also both like to plan for the future.
@@johannageisel5390 I must’ve forgotten that bit. I watch all of Billi’s episodes. Thanks for the reminder!
@@klarag7059 That was shortly after "soon" was established, so over a year ago by now.
Yes dad may forget but todd ll remaind😂
He holds me accountable, that's for sure. Lol
You did the right thing
Yup. I had to make it right. Lol
He now needs a Rectify button! (J/k!)
🤣
That is the face of I don't even want to look at you...
Yes, that is his mad face, fortunately I don't see it very often.
this is so awesome!
Thank you!
Now I'm mad! 😡
Lol
What type of cat is Todd?? He is so beautiful! I gave six of them myself snd they are all so beautiful and they each gave their own personalities!💓
A cat with his markings is called a Tuxedo Cat
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks ,he reminds me of a Maine Coon with the colorations of a tuxedo cat!😀💓
I've seen several "language teachers" use buttons like "Hmmm?" or "Question" to indicate questions. Do you think it would be feasible/possible to introduce a "period" or "end of messsage" button, so Todd can indicate that he has finished his sentence?
He has the Hmm? and What buttons, he also has an All Done button but usually says that when he's done playing with a toy.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksHas he used the Hmm button yet?
LOL with you on Todd's rightfully righteous indignation! I wonder if Todd is looking at you between words, as he builds his sentence, to see if you are paying attention as he goes? I am not sure it is so out-of-place for you to speak to him for more mid-sentence, to show that you are with him, ready for the rest of his words. Is the expert consensus that it is better not to respond mid-sentence?
I generally do look over at him on his first button push to acknowledge I have heard him and I am listening. I don't know if it's better to wait or not, Todd and I are learning this as we go. My thought process on it is to let him finish his thought. When I first started doing that I realized he was making small sentences and wondered how much sooner he would have done that if I was not interrupting him. I believe on the FluentPet website guide, if not there I know I read it somewhere, it is not uncommon to take 20 or 30 seconds between button pushes in multi-word requests.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks I do feel that when he starts with 'Dad' it's an opening, so acknowledging that seems natural.
@@incalescent9378”Dad” in this case feels equivalent to “Hey, Siri” 😂
The service in this establishment is not what it once was. Todd still remembers a time when the staff was punctual with the Evening Mousey.
🤣🤣🤣
I just love how he stretches his legs as he gets ready to talk. It’s his version of Billi’s circling and tail lashing. So cute to see how each cat has their own way of expressing their concentration.
Yes, Todd will stretch, wash, or scratch while he's thinking.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks A bit like a human cracking their fingers before they start typing.
That stretch struck me right in the heart -- adorable! Like he's got to be limber to work those buttons lol
Disappointed by his human 🤣🤣🤣
I have failed in my Hooman servant responsibilities.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks You will not be getting a good reference as a butler.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks All is well: Cats don’t hold grudges.
Lol! Some do! 😂 Lifelong ones even!
This is such a respectful conversation! Omg
Thank you
Awwwwwww. Don’t make him mad. He’s adorable.
I do my best not to make him mad.
Yes, "mad" is the perfect word to use. You forgot about him!! He knows how long 15 minutes is. Thats so adorable that he expressed his feelings like that ❤
😂
😁
😂😂😂
Lol
Todd still looks so sweet even with his mad face! ❤😻
I know, I have to be careful not to laugh at him. He looks so cute when he's mad.
Thankyou for sharing.
