  • Petra is a historical and archaeological city in southern Jordan. The city is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Arab Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction.
The city's most famous feature is its stunning rock-cut architecture, including the iconic Treasury building (Al-Khazneh), which is carved into the side of a towering red sandstone cliff. Other notable structures in Petra include the Monastery, the Great Temple, and the Amphitheater, all of which showcase the incredible skill and creativity of the Nabataean architects and artisans. Other important temples in Petra are the Temple of the Winged Lions and Qasr al-Bint.
