  • Let's go flying, kids! Our land-locked buddy Big Bird wants to fly *sniff!*, Grover shows off in his airplane, and Luis serenades a pigeon with "La Paloma" on another high-flying ep of the best darn kids TV show ever! From Season 12, Episode 1459, originally aired on December 11, 1980. With thanks to the majestically soaring @Sesame Maniac. Let's dig in, shall we?
Throughout the episode, Big Bird (Caroll Spinney) explores various ways to help him fly with Poco Loco's (Michael Earl) support and suggestions. He ends up taking off in a hot air balloon with Maria (Sonia Manzano) as he sings "I'm Flying".
Also on the street, Bob (Bob McGrath), Linda (Linda Bove), and Timi (Timothy Near) show some kids how to say "butterfly" in sign language and sing a song about it (repeat), Luis (Emilio Delgado) serenades a lucky pet pigeon with "La Paloma" (you're not a red-blooded gal of the '70s if you don't swoon a little around 33:05) and sings "Three of These Things" with three kids with umbrellas and one unlucky kid without one.
REPEAT MUPPETS: Ernie (Jim Henson) and Bert (Frank Oz) cooperate on a painting (a bowl of oatmeal or a purple monster?); Lefty the Salesman (Frank Oz) sells Ernie some air; Ernie has two bags of cookies, one with many cookies and one with only one, so which would Cookie Monster (Frank Oz) like?; Grover (Frank Oz) demonstrates "above" and "below" in his cute little airplane; Kermit (Jim Henson) and Marlina try to demonstrate the number 12 with Grover's help as he keeps sending up the wrong balloons through a hole in the set and he ends up floating away with the balloon; Rocket Cheer.
NEW CARTOON/ANIMATION: Travis Travel shows different types of transportation; Block Civilization (stop-motion animation of blocks forming a brief history of civilization; did not realize until today that the "building" with all of the animals isn't a zoo, but is supposed to be Noah's Ark ... I think) and Rock Bridge (three stop-motion rocks try to get across a lake), both by Al Jarnow.
REPEAT CARTOONS: Pinball Number Count #12 and Typewriter Guy: U for Umbrella (both by Jeff Hale); U for UP (boy needs a letter U to complete the word); UP Balloons; man jumps up onto an UP; Danger Sign (really weird and creepy baby imagines what the sign could mean); Counting 4 airplanes as they take off; Find the camouflaged parrot (Voice: Paul Dooley); BIRD (large bird munching on rectangle forms the word "BIRD"); "I hate frogs!"; Richard Bird (from the Sesame Street comic strip) subtracts two balloons (Cliff Roberts); Pat the Pilot skywrites a letter P with her plane (John Korty); Psychedelic Letter P (letter P sits on an island before a rotating sunset, the ridges of the letter move along the letter and flash in different colors); Clouds that look like things; What if a turtle and rabbit switched appearances?
FILM REPEATS: Flying, Osprey, Bald Eagle, and Kids Count 18 Backflips (all four by Joe Raposo); Pelicans (Joe?), Counting 1-20 old-timey airplanes taking off; boy explores on the ocean rocks; Bathtub Tugboat (boy plays with a tugboat in the bath as we see footage of a real tugboat); Danger (man walks through town reading a newspaper avoiding danger as he goes; no, it's not Jim Henson).
NOTE: Honestly thought either myself or someone else had uploaded this one ages ago. Apologies for the delay!
