Why not CNC machine the iconic 3DBenchy? This was a fun project to test out the capabilities of my CNC router with aluminum. I haven't seen any other machined versions of the benchy (probably because it doesn't make any sense) so now I have a cool one-of-a-kind item for my desk. Regardless of the end practicality, I learned a lot from this project and documented it in video form.
Let me know what types of projects you would like to see next!

3DBenchy, as far as I'm aware, is Creative Commons No Derivative, so you can't share remixed works featuring it. A model that doesn't have this problem is the Cali-Cat, its not got all the same torture tests as 3DBenchy, but it is in my opinion much cuter!

yeah no one cares and shares derivatives anyways.

Looks awesome man! I can respect the amount of work that went into the CAM here, especially when you started with an STL (allegedly, of course).

Awesome cnc content! Found your bench WITH AN I on reddid and followed up on the DYI cnc. You've earned a sub. Definitely keep it up!

I love open-source. But there's a bit of a other side to it as well, people then expect everything to be free all the time. That's fine when you have a day-job, but if you're actually designing or programming for your income, you kinda have to charge stuff. :) Otherwise, very cool project!

The no-derivates copyright makes sense for the 3dbenchy as it's supposed to be a standard benchmark, and any deviations from the actually model would break the standard for actual test comparisons. In addition it's allowed to modify the model for personal use but you may not distribute the modified files, hence no cnc benchy files available.

I believe more that it is the case that Daniel Norée put a copyright on the 3Dbenchy, so that not just anyone (China ... cough cough), uses (steals) the name or model for commercial purposes.
Which in turn leads to it still being free in some form. At least to all of us 3d print nerds! :-)

Have you considered using an undercutting tool to get some of the details inside the cabin?

Not sure what cad software you use, Fusion 360 does cad and cam. You could easily take any stl and modify it, then cam it. At first I thought this was a pla cast aluminum.

One of these days, somebody is going to create a tool that seamlessly combines a Metal 3D printer, a 5-axis CNC mill, a plotter, a rotary lathe, a laser cutter, and more... All in one package.

There is a 3D printer that has multiple tool heads that it can swap between, but that's an FDM/FFF style for plastic, combined with a few other tools. I could see there being a reasonable combination with additive and subtractive manufacturing, maybe 3D printing a part and then milling it with a fine sanding bit to remove layer lines.
