No one told me how much I would fall in love with watching the wonder of learning. We have been doing a very traditional/classical education and are switching to a more "almost unschooling" type education for many subjects because I want an independent learner and I LOVE watching my son (11) light up when he learns something new on his own. When I started, I never thought I'd be at this spot in my journey.

Nobody told me how obsessed I would be searching for curriculum in the middle of the night! 😂 😆 I heard one homeschool mama say once you decide to set it and forget it! The fear of missing out is real and a hard one to let go of!
Also my husband works from home and we homeschool, so we are all home together like you guys and we love it!

Thank you so much for all of your videos. They are such an encouragement to me. Every time I get a notification from youtube that you have uploaded a new video, I grab a cup of coffee and enjoy it with you. My son calls it my coffee with Mandy time lol. He is in 4th grade. Here is a hug from a homeschooling mom just for you (hug).

I can so relate to breaking away from my teens needing me as often. It’s hard, but freeing. And yes, it’s so important for their independent growth. You’re doing a fantastic job Mandy!

Some people accuse us of either being sick or skipping school when we go out during the day. When I tell them I homeschool......😳

The biggest game changer for us was finding out we don't have to do every subject every day. Also, a lot of school books and literature written prior to the 1930s are available as free PDFs now, which means you can provide an excellent education for the cost of printer paper and ink.

It's made my family a lot closer as well. I've also noticed as well the overwhelming feeling of my teens slowly becoming their own person. Even though I've only been homeschooling my 3 kids for 4 months, I've noticed myself questioning if I'm doing enough or if they are learning enough. I realized also how toxic a public school environment sometimes can be for a child. Best choice I ever made was homeschooling.

My aha moment was when I realized the difference between Deschooling and Unschooling. I remember as a child, seeing the battles to support homeschool in Texas. So, I was so nervous and trying so hard to it right. 😊

@@Dianahernandez-il4mk Deschooling is a period of time to allow both the child and the parent to get adjusted and comfortable with being out of the rules and atmosphere of public school. Unschooling is a method used for learning where the focus is on the child becoming an independent learner.

Yes! It just happens like that and before you know it, they are off on their own. It’s what we want but it’s hard on the heart at the same time.

Any tips on how to encourage more independent learners? My youngest two boys (9 and 11) really struggle with independently diving in to get the information for themselves. I feel like they want me to spoon feed them all the info. I would really like to know,.what are proper expectations? We are using generations curriculum this year btw, thanks for the recommendation! It gave me the confidence to finally dive in and try it and i really love their material and message so much!

What no one told me.... people are bossy and nosy about my homeschooling journey. Letting them know I'm a former teacher shuts down alot of rude comments, but not all. I'm just tired of it. I stopped wearing my "homeschool mom" t shirts when I go out because it feels like I'm wearing a target.

I haven't officially started homeschooling I guess because my son is less than 2 but we do BFIAR and he knows his letter sounds a-f and can count to five. All this to say is I learned it's okay to go at what he wants to learn/do rather than what people expect. People expect him to just want to play trucks (which he does also) but he also wants to read books with mama and learn thins are supposedly too much for him and potty train. So here we go at his pace and not societies.

I learned that you can skip 6-7-8th grade and go straight to 9th grade. All together it gives you 3 years of extra time to catch up in any subject your child has struggled in and go in their own pace. Public school used to be 1st -8th grade they stretched out to be 12 years instead of 8 years and they didn't change absolutely nothing in their curriculum by not adding anything new to curriculum. Also you can dual credit high school and get early college credits at the same time.

No one is going to “Knock on your door” and want to see what your doing AND if by chance they do,don’t answer😂. Let that freedom ring…learned too late on that one.

Same thing happened to me last year and year before…They kept sending my kids home and they spent more time quarantined then at school…yet the district had the audacity to send me letters of truancy from the state 😡 I called and went postal…They kept them home not me 😂

We had a pediatrician tell us not to homeschool. She was very against it and it kept me from starting homeschooling from the beginning. After the pandemic hit it gave me the push I needed to homeschool. We saw that pediatrician one more time after beginning our homeschooling journey and she really stuck her nose up at us for homeschooling. Needless to say we aren't seeing her again. We have a dentist that loves the idea of homeschooling and thinks we rock for doing it. I've taken my children out for a haircut in the middle of the day in September and was questioned by some older ladies why they weren't in school. I don't understand why people just cannot be nice and mind their own business. I've learned not to care what others think. I used to worry about going out in the middle of the day like I was breaking the law and being judged by everyone.

If you list something and it burns then move on,switch, keep it listed but it’s ok to switch to what works. When people say “ can you teach that?”… of course, can’t you?
