This video not only shows how a Kamado Joe breaks into pieces, it shows once again that it's just really super strong and quality constructed. Nice job James.
I once watched a engineering project by a senior, who was a sailor, test the strength of different types of line. During one test, a small nylon rope popped a cut through the steel tape used to measure the change in length with increasing tension. I would have never had my legs and other body parts wrapped around the Kamado while tightening the straps. Note: Nylon lines and ropes are particularly dangerous because they stretch some much as they store all that energy
Seeing how strong this thing is, and as a fellow Canadian im always slightly worried about if im getting it too hot too fast in the colder months. Would be a very interesting test if you could get another base to sacrifice to dump in some hot charcoal from a chimney into a stone cold Kamado on a freezing winter day
For the missing pieces you can fill in the area with your cement , as you are piecing together the different parts make sure the are wet with some clean water . Once assembly is complete , let it set up for approximately 24 hours and then fire it up to about 500 degrees Fahrenheit to bake it and complete the application . Good to go !!!
I used refractory cement to fix a cracked fire pit of a Vision Kamado. It worked for a while until it cracked again. I then used metal bands riveted on. This really worked. I can't imagine doing that kind of repair to the outside of a ceramic Kamado. Hence, I say it again: a Blaze all aluminum Kamado or a Goldens' cast iron Kamado has been the way to go for me. I don't have to worry about dropping them on the ground, or cracking. They'll last forever.
Ok James I have a urgent question.... I tried to fix my dome alignment and being not handy whatsoever I accidentally took the air lift hing completly offy joe and took the bottom nut off😖 the hinge POPPED open (surprisingly didn't get hurt) but now I can't get it to close after hours of trying to loosen Tighten that bolt.. oops.... Any suggestions???
Lol, love your persistence. Especially the ironic comment of “I’ll just take 15 min on a weekend and get the video done.” Very entertaining to watch as I was in suspense to see which would actually work.
What pizza oven is that in the background? I bought a dojoe for my big Joe. I think the Temps get too high for the kj. The steel seal started to peal off. So I'm thinking in investing in a seprate pizza oven.
As far as plan A goes, your chilling phase was never spread out over all of the ceramic to cause the expansion (over all of it) to cease and rapidly contract. You'd have had better chance tossing the whole hot ceramic brown into a swimming pool or a large feeding trough filled with ice water. Plan B would not have worked as shown as every bit of pressure that was added to the nylon strap is transferred evenly to all parts of the circle of ceramic in contact with the strap. Celircular pressure is evenly transferred to all of the beneath the strap. Had you added a baseball sized rock under the strap at 9ne nor two places under the strap, then, the strap where the rocks were would press into the circle (not alongside the circle) to cause it to fracture with a high pressure point that you wouldn't see without the rocks.
Just a tip. Perhaps dropping it from a lower point with two people holding it horizontally would have worked to crack it in bigger pieces. The huge fall though was amazing. Always wanted to see that 😂
I was in the market for a kamado type grill. Kamado joe was on the list. Went with the Weber Summit kamado as I reside in Canada and cracks are nothing to worry about with dual Steel air insulated grill.
My KJ Soapstone failed during a cook. What was odd is I understand Thermal Shock.so I don't expose my stuff to extreme temp changes. Needless to say, Kamado Joe is replacing the soapstone at no charge. Hats off to them!!
So we learned how tough and well built these things are, it's a great promotional video for KJ. BTW, the third test of heating and cooling might have been more effective if you cool the outside and heat the inside (or vise a versa) as opposed to cooling and heating the same side. Just my two cents... Thanks, I enjoyed the video.
Let's "crack on" 🤣 to plan B, C, D...Kamado Joe is tougher than you think James !! Great quality check, maybe they can hire you at Kamado Joe 😁. Had a great laugh, splendid video 👌👌👌
I think dropping is the most likely scenario. Trying to move it out the garage with thos small wheels. I'm sure most people drop there's. I don't see why anyone would be getting the temp to instantly drop.
i wonder why i couldn't succeed ... perhaps some have a hidden weakness from shipping or the factory that makes 1 out of every X made more likely to have this risk as it is very uncommon and even when i tried to be abusive i couldn't do it
If anything, I got a good laugh out of it. I have another question about the charcoal basket. Which do you prefer, the KJ or the Kick ash Basket? The KJ looks a lot stronger then the other. I don't use mine a lot but like the idea behind it. Thanks
@@JimmyC1979 Thanks for your responds to my question. Just watched the video and I like the KJ version . I think it's worth the extra money as I'm just getting into it. Thanks again
Very interesting that the bucket of water didn't do the trick. I've tentatively planned to replicate a new england style lobster bake in my KJ later this month. A Kamado seems particularly well suited for the task. Except it does require adding soaking wet seaweed directly to the grill (I plan to put grates on top of firebox and rocks on top of that to heat up 400 deg). Based on this video, it seems adding the wet seaweed on top of rocks **should** be safe without cracking the KJ. Any thoughts on possible pitfalls? Thanks!
I didn't think compression would break it. But you should have tried a Jack on the inside and pushed out so it's not under compression. it would have broke
I thought the same, but then you have to think about where the band sits which is on the upper lip/rim which isn’t as thick and won’t be quite as strong imo.
Trying to crack it with the ratchet strap probably could've worked if you placed something under the strap to concentrate the stress. Kind of like trying to crush an egg in your bare hand (difficult) vs. a hand with a ring on it (easy). Thanks for the effort/entertainment!
it’s a damaged base with a chip that prevented the bands from securing properly. i don’t think that makes a very good prize to give away. this was heading to the dump so we made a video stress testing it before it was tossed. i will however be announcing a Kamado giveaway soon
Hello! Have you looked at other kamados such as the Blaze Kamado or the Goldens’ Cast Iron kamado? I’m in the market for a kamado grill and considered those for durability. But I’m still considering the kamado Joe or the Primo.
i haven't reviewed them but i have used others (weber summit and broil king keg)... not sure if the experience from those will translate but i found them MORE energy efficient which isn't always a good thing as a small smouldering fire doesnt taste as good as open flame. I am sure they are more durable, and if i was putting it on a trailer hitch to go tailgating that would be a no brainer (to go for metal vs. ceramic) but for normal use i dont think durability is really a factor (especially with a lifetime warranty) which is why i focus more on the taste and accessory options
We have a KJ and bbq in all seasons in central ontario. We picked it because we have crazy winds and any other bbq couldn't heat enough to cook especially in the winter months. The KJ is super insulated and extremely accurate at maintaining temperatures. If you have the $s it is worth it. Hands down! FYI we originally used an Acorn metal insulated Kamado because of durability concerns. They work, but will rust because of the constant heat cycling. KJ is more accurate and very durable....even on hot cooks like pizza.
I recently removed and reinstalled my dome lid and wondered what the chances were that I over tightened the band. After this, I don’t think that I did 😂
This video was awesome. I loved all of the dad jokes and the hashtags and slow motion cuts. This is timely as I terrified as I move to a new house that movers will damage my Joe.

i tried. answering the guy at the stores question about what you need it for with words like “blow up” and “explode” my Kamado I learned does not result in a successful transaction. i wouldn’t be surprised if my photo is on the back wall somewhere with the other do not sell to these people list 😆
Couldn't you have taped off using masking or duct tape a section you wanted to crack? Taping the inside and outside should be enough to prevent multiple section fractures and limit the actual fracture size. This would be akin to a tampered glass windshield with tint on it. Might have helped you localize a specific section or piece.
I'm surprised you thought the ratchet strap would work at all. Ceramic is ridiculously strong in compression. Easily over 100,000 psi strong. You cant buy a ratchet strap strong enough to break that. But it's weak in tension and bending, thats why it shatters when knocked over. That puts certain portions of it in tension and it just cant handle it.
its more the worry all the KJ groups have about over tightening the bands that i thought i would demo that... i thought maybe since the metal / clamps are not smooth that it might have some unnatural pressure vs. circular bands that there was a chance it might work... but no dice lol
What the? Did I miss an episode? I see a new toy there on your right La Piazza... Did you do a review video? Would love to hear your thoughts as a pizza oven is a significant investment to me.
What a a waste of time. Most accidents will happen when the pot is knocked over accidentally. Cut to the chase already. But good to see the punishment it can maybe stand. As a former military family we have had ( HABACHI POTS) same Komodo company, over thirty years! Only the top smoke damper and inner chamber ring have been damaged. The top ceramic damper was glued back together and the inner chamber wall carefully placed together. No glue. And still returning great results. We also had the cast iron top from a second pot.
