Great video. Does Super Potato allow you just to go in an film? I remember going to the Nippombashi Super Potato in Osaka way back in 2008 and 2004 and had to ask for permission with my big mini DV camera. I ask because I'm heading to Akihabara next month and would love to film a few shops, but I don't want any issues. Since you film regularly, I was hoping for some insight.
Yeah they're totally cool with it, but maybe ask before you start filming just to be polite.
KidShoryuken Ok cool. Thanks for the heads up.
Loving that super potato tshirt
Thanks for making these vids man. I miss Japan and watching these really makes my day
Thanks for watching! I'm glad I could make you feel nostalgic.
Nice shop! Also good to find some games to take home too. Always wanted to try Ghostbusters on the Megadrive myself. Enjoy!
It's a solid action platformer, highly recommended.
I may have to go check this location out at some point in the near future. Didn't realize another store popped up.
This is my favorite Super Potato. Ikebukuro is much quieter than Akihabara, though. Unless I'm missing something, I didn’t find much to do here aside from eating.
Do you think the Japanese retro gaming market will eventually collapse in on itself from over inflation? Even in the Hard-Off's the glass cases are more like museums where nothing ever moves. I understand that the overseas markets have had a hand in that, especially US collectors, but prices will have to drop eventually. I miss the days when the hobby wasn't over-saturated and you could get even the expensive stuff at a moderate price.
Not Jim but another perspective: I remember the week hard off changed. I felt betrayed and my heart broken. However around early 2000 it was like the wild west I've been told haha. However, even 7 years ago prices were great! I have some pics of prices then and it is sad how cheap stuff was.
Eventually the demand will go down as more and more games become available digitally and more people throttle back on their collecting. Just have to be patient.
@@MadPanicGaming looking forward to buy Metal Slug AES for under a 1000$ again......haha who am I kidding :D
Hey jim I know you just do game stuff but can you stop in a hobby shop there?Always wanted to see if they still have them in Japan.I love Rc cars as well as retro games. Thx love the videos
I can add it to my shooting schedule.
I just bought a broken virtual boy on Ebay last night, it's for a donor system to create a consolized model. But I laughed when I saw the broken one.
Very nice looking store, seems to have a fair bit of stock. Prices up there but at least it looked to be in very good condition.
Nice MSX there and I think I saw some titles as well.
Love your videos! Need to save some money and go to Japan.
Lickle - little Samson - 891.52 United States Dollar, well good to know the Japanese version is like the American in terms of value. Edit ok, that Samurai showdown is $3500.00 thats insane, i heard this place was overpriced for some stuff
So were these prices cheaper then the Akihabara location? You said Super Potato is always expensive but you didn't say if they were slightly cheaper or not.
I didn't really see any difference.
Somebody get this man a PS4 stat!
Ha ha, all in due time.
yadda yadda yadda, all the stuff you're supposed to say at the end of a youtube video lol
Why can’t we have a store like this in the states ????
How was the Cuty Suzuki game?
Not that bad actually. I was expecting an F but got a C.
Will you ever do a video on Nakano Broadway?
Yes, I'm planning on it.
I have alot of seal games cause ever my brother or my girl give me the same game
Hey Jim,
I PM you on Atariage bro. Today's is the big 5 for the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com. 8^)
6:00 Anyone know what the name of this music is or who it's by? It's pretty amazing but I have no idea who it is? Thanks in advance!
Mega Man 8 - Intro Stage (Remix) Better than no Answer :)
I never understood the allure of retro gaming - I grew up on these games and played many of them to adnauseam but I wouldn't want to play vast majority of them now. The nostalgia alone cannot justify and entire business model that Japan has for these types of games. Just like computers in general, video games evolved and with the availability of modern PS4/PC/Switch/XONE games that have seen major improvements over the years I really don't see why anyone would want to spend money on something as archaic as famicom, especially considering you can play all of the classic on Switch anyway. It's sort of like buying an old Pentium 1 or 486 PC for modern use hoping to get the same out of it.
I really tried to understand it, I even created a fully fledged Raspberry Pi based emulator with custom made components for my previous place of work (turned into an arcade cabinet eventually) - but I still don't see it as "fun"
I guess I'm just not one for the nostalgia...
I know some people who aren't personally interested in retro gaming, but I know very few (if any) who *can't understand* why it would appeal to others. Quite a rare phenomenon!
Why do a lot of people wear a face mask?
Welcom to Japan!
It’s a very good video
Please come to Akihabara next time!
I go to Akiba every month. :)
MAMEs are legal now in Japan.. I expect the prices of these cartridges will plummet soon.
If people bought games to actually play them. Most people buy games as a sense of pride of owning the box and media. Its actually much harder to play games on real hardware these days than it is to just launch a ROM emulator.
I hope so, there's plenty of stuff I'd like to get if only were a bit cheaper.
@@MadPanicGaming The days of being able to impulse buy due to cheap product has long gone for the 16bit era. You can get cheap ps3 era games. I'm one of the idiots that is still collecting at the high market rates. Although I don't see them dropping anytime soon.
@Daisy Wong I don't know anyone that has a home version of Scud Racer. Its own the arcade machine or emulate, for most that choice is very easy.
LOL good luck on that one.
I noticed that the price has doubled for the Star Soldier compilation on PSP. IIRC, I paid about $40 for mine a few years ago from Surugaya. Bought it mostly for Star Parodier, which I also got for PC Engine.
BTW, Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa is known in Canada as Baby Mario, thanks to Famicom pirate publisher Micro Genius. It was easily found back in the day in mom n pop video stores and in flea markets.
That's interesting, I had no idea.
damn, went to that kfc in the opening and guess I missed that super potato. didn't know it was close by
dude i totally hope to fly over to tokyo some time this year to buy games, and i hope i can buy you a beer!
thanks for all the videos
Thanks Jim. The Super Potato stores are also great in Osaka and Nagoya if you are ever out that way. In Japan, you get spoiled for choice and Super Potato seems expensive, but it is relative. Australia is still magnitudes higher in price than Super Potato.
Wow. They wanted over $2100 for Art of Fighting 3 for the Neo-Geo AES!
Most AES games are expensive, no matter where you buy them. I don’t know about the value of the Japanese cart but the USA one is not far off that price... prolly higher
Man, some of those prices where ridiculous. I know you can do a lot better on Ebay with a lot of that stuff.
Great video Jim! In my 9 years in Japam never realized that there was one in Ikebukuro haha. I generally avoid Super potato though and only go from time to time to see their clearance items and posters for sale. :)
I never thought I would like to own a Virtual Boy, till I played one for a few minutes. The 3d effect was really impressive, great little system.
Really cool vid Jim. Lovely to see the weather improving in Tokyo! Also its amazing to see how clean the streets are in Japan. The streets here in Ireland are so dirty....
People are a bit mad for sealed games over here, one especially is Rule of Rose for PS2. Average game but incredibly rare. But people are nuts. I collect to PLAY :)
Awesome video! I’m so excited to go back to Japan and visit all the game shops!
Thanks Jim, this is cool and entertaining, I definitely want to check that store.
Don't spend money at Super Potato. I prices are barely better than Ebay. It is far smarter to shop around for used retro games at Hard-Off or Book-Off stores in Japan.
I enjoy your Akihabara videos, but it's awesome to see you walking around other neighborhoods. More like this please. Two quick comments... if you don't have them, the game&watch collections for GB/GBA are must owns for nintendo fans, IMO, and dirt cheap. Especially the GBA game. As for factory sealed, I have a small but very real moral problem with people who collect them. Games are made to be played, not stuck on a shelf forever.
Can you post the music you use in your videos? You always manage to pick some great stuff.
I second that. Music was awesome
Very nice setup. Prices didn't look nearly as bad as the prices at the Akihabara Super Potato that I've seen from the videos on here. Still a bit high, but not as high as I would've thought. Great video, Jim! :)
Thanks!
So I actually visited a video game shop in Tokyo before you!!?? Lol, I visited this Super Potato about a year and a half ago.
Yeah man, I'm way behind the curb.
Mate, I can’t believe that you are letting Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry V pass... Both are reasons enough to own a PS4
I'm planning to get a PS4 just as soon as I have some extra space and some time to put into the games.
Love to get my hands some of those music cds.
Ahhhh those Virtual On twin sticks at 18:44 I must have them!
Those SFC carts without labels are just SF Memory Cassettes / Nintendo Power Flash Carts, the service where you could take your blank cart to a machine in Lawson and write new games to it
Oh cool, I had no idea.
What i find weird is that those prices are 30%-50% higher than what you can get them for on ebay or yahoo auc, so what is the point? Who buys those games?
People with a lot of money I imagine.
@@MadPanicGaming yes people who don't know better
What's the rules regarding filming on these retro stores? I wanna try to go back to Japan this year and make some filming and dunno how to proced with some stores.
Just ask if it's OK. Super Potato always allows photos and filming.
I have a factory sealed Sonic and Knuckles. 👊👊
yeah I don't get the allure the few times I've bought new stuff was because thats the only way I could find it and I cracked it open...
Very nice video good stuff there also on 3:42 what game is it may ask thanks and good video 👍
That is Valis for the Famicom.
Assault suit valken is cybernator + gambare goemon saga , are the best games for super famicom.
Ghostbusters on the Mega Drive/Genesis is high in my list. I played the game years ago when I was a kid. I remember having fun for quite some time. Enjoy that one Jim.
I've really been enjoying it, it's a solid action platformer.
I wish you luck in finding Sonic and Knuckles, the rarest game on the mega drive (rarer than Battle Mania Daiginjou lol)
Sonic and Knuckles really isnt that rare. Not PAL version anyways
@@Rickai85 it is for the meme
Damn, it sure feels like it.
@@MadPanicGaming hey im curious. Have you came across any copies of alien soldier in a while? I dont think ive seen one in these videos.
You lucky bastard!!!
Kidsho, where the hell do you get the music for your intros? Ive heard some smooth stuff on here.
nice new neighborhood
All this retro stuff in japan is sweet but you need to know japanese to play these right?
Actually, if you're more interested in simple games like shooters, fighters and platformers, you don't really need to read any Japanese. If you love RPGs though, then yeah, you need some reading skills.
@@MadPanicGaming ah ok cool. So bypass the reading and shoot haha. K. Thx!
Very cool I did not know they had one there. I will have to check it out one of these days.
Dragon ball uno!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s that song playing during the 4min mark...megaman I think?
Sounds like a remix to the first stage in megaman 8
Yep, remix of the intro stage from Mega Man 8.
Game and watch is oldschool as fuck....i believe my friends back in the late 80s early 90s had those in school lol
Another great video dude. I could watch you shop for hours. How much time do you usually spend in a game store like that, when youre not filming?
usually no more than 30 minutes or so.
Exelente video.!!! sega Dreamcast.!!! sega Saturn.!!! gracias por subir tu video.!
When I visit japan I’m surley getting a whole bunch of PlayStation 1 2 psp and vita games
I do collect factory sealed games, more modern stuff, as retro is usually pricey. Reason being it is for display purpose and for cover art I like, so I would often buy 2 if I wanted to play it.
I had a great time walking around this area. I didn't know there was a Super Potato here.
How long has there been a super potato in Ikebukuro?
Do you ever hunt at book offs or hard offs?
Yes, whenever I can find the time.
What's the sample stickers mean on the Saturn games ??
WDY 84 The explanation is in the video...
@@v-tamer9064 all ok I must of missed it
I just came here for the free pie...?
It's at your mom's house.
Nice video jim
Thanks!
I could not collect factory sealed games. The desire to play them is to high for me. xD Nice video!
Same here!
Gambare goemon for the NES, 680¥ only wow
New comment on old video.... what's that song you use in the montage?
Nice vid bro! Brightened my day! PEACE
IS THE MOTHERE SERIES THERE ?!
Yes.
@@MadPanicGaming How much is it?
@@pat_the_khan2837 I don't recall. I already have them so I wasn't looking at the price.
Enjoy the ghost busters game it's really good!
Could you please do a video on Monster Hunter Merchandise in a store?
im going to japan this summer. and i want to buy a orange pokemon n64. Do you know the price of them?
at 18:00 -- you can see nice ones for around $100. good luck in ur search - ur probably looking at paying more for the pokemon premium
With box they can go for 10,000 to 12,000 yen. Without box as cheap as 8,000yen. In stores though.... Replying cause jp 64 is my main focus. :)
Yeah, about $100 on average. I'd suggest shopping around though, probably find it cheaper at Trader or Hard Off.
Love these videos and also your Japan Headlines ones too.
Thank you!
Thanks for Ikebukuro Super Potato tour!
Such good games at that place
Great area like to see more ☺ ♥ 🇯🇵
its near the strip club
Lol what's a strip club like in Japan? Do they dance in winter clothes? Sarcasm aside I bet it's top only huh?
How far is Ikebukuro from you apartment, as compared to Akihabra?
About the same, 20 minutes or so.
Prices are very high, must be demand for retro games in Japan. I have lots of Japanese games for Saturn and PC engine. Some are cheaper alternatives but most are Japanese exclusives.
From what I have seen a lot Japanese retro games are cheaper than the North American version. Oh okay I just noticed you mentioned this after fully reading your comment..
Could you tell me the best way to learn Japanese?
I must get those games you showed at Super Potato!
Man I need to go back to Japan SOON
Great ramen in Ikebukuro also
Thanx for your videos !
Do you go sometimes in Hard Off shops in Tokyo ?
I do but not so often anymore. I'd go a lot more if there were some decent Hard Offs in my area but right now I need to travel at least 45 minutes to get to a decent one and I don't usually have the time for that.
Totally agree with you about sealed games, Jim. If I buy a game, I do it so I can play it. A sealed game is just a lump of plastic, as far as I'm concerned. I can understand if it's being purchased as some sort of investment, but as far as collecting is concerned, it's never made any sense to me.
Yeah, I can see buying them just to sell them later, but that's about it.
Absolutely.....buy games to play them...
Love the game boy stuff!
Good video :) A friend of mine collects sealed games more so as a "investment"
That I can understand, making a little money. Buying them just for the sake of having them though, seems like a waste of money to me.
Another great video man, get out to Gundam Base when you can
I'm planning on it just as soon as I have the time.
@@MadPanicGaming no worries, I enjoy your footage, maybe you could try some cool hobby shops around town too, either way it's always good, actually watched some Salor Moon today😉
Ikebukuro is my main hang out spot after school. I'm gonna have to check this place out sometime this week
Why you are all the way in Japan? Military family?
I'm going to university here
I go there pretty often. Good exercise (a little far from where I'm working) and good selection!
I really start to get the feeling that it's always the usual suspects sitting in those glas vitrines at exorbitantly high prices. not really rare stuff but only expensive...
love this video man, keep it up
Stupid question, but I guess it’s worth asking. Are the games in Japanese or English?
