- The word Holocaust comes from a Greek word meaning complete destruction by fire. This was the fate that the National Socialists had for their enemies during WW2 and it is fitting that this term should have been given to what happened to their victims. However initially the Nazis buried those that they killed, a change of policy occurred in 1942 which is the subject of this presentation. Three things occurred on 7 December 1941 which brought about this change. The first was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor which following Hitler’s declaration of war against the Soviet Union on 11 December 1941 turned a European conflict into a world war. It is also when the Soviet offensive in front of Moscow gathered steam and began to push German forces away from Moscow resulting in capturing thousands of square kilometres of land formerly occupied by them. Finally, in a small town in Poland, Koło, the Jewish population was gathered together, locked up in the synagogue and transported in groups to the death camp at Chełmno nad Nerem where they were gassed in a lorry built for the purpose. This is Chełmno nad Nerem today, and this camp started to mass murder people only four days before Hitler gathered together his cronies in Berlin on 12 December 1941 to tell them of his plans to kill all the Jews in Europe.
On 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany had invaded the Soviet Union. In the tracks of the advancing armies followed Einsatzgruppen, murder squads who were mass killing what they termed Jews and communists. The future killers had come together here at Pretsch on the Elbe in the Spring of 1941. They were billeted on the Dueben Heath and housed Einsatzkommando 4a, part of Einsatzgruppe C, following behind the Sixth Army, part of Army Group South. It was commanded by Colonel Paul Blobel. Blobel was one of those responsible for the massacre which took place here at Babi Yar in Kiev on 29 and 30 September 1941 when 33,771 Jews from that city and the area around it were murdered by mass shooting.
Some time in the autumn of 1941, Blobel passed Babi Yar and noted small movements in the ground, caused probably from the decomposition of the corpses and made a joke about it being from ‘his Jews’. If nothing else, this showed that burying the victims would not stop them from bearing testimony.
When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, evidence of mass killings by Stalin came to light. The Stalinist regime was responsible for the killing of huge numbers of Soviet citizens, not just the millions who had been deliberately left to starve, or died of starvation related illnesses but also hundreds of thousands who had been shot, some in mass killings. At times, the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, did not have the time to evacuate its prisoners so it killed them instead as happened in Soviet occupied Lwów. In other places the crimes discovered by the Germans went back to the 1930s. As the Germans discovered communist crime sites, they did not want their own criminal activity to come to light, particularly as with the Soviets advancing, the US now in the war and Hitler’s order of 12 December 1941 to murder all the Jews in Europe.
On 13 January 1942, Paul Blobel was relieved as commanding office of Einsatzkommando 4a, possibly because of his alcoholism although some of the commanding officers of the killing squads were rotated as part of their duties. In Blobel’s case, he probably was not rotated as according to his account at his trial, he was initially unemployed but it seems as though he met the head of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) Reinhard Heydrich who then passed him onto Heinrich Müller, head of the Gestapo. It was Müller who told him that he was to destroy the corpses of the murder victims, not just Jews but all victims. This is the beginning of Sonderkommando 1005.
Blobel and his driver Julius Bauer went to Łódź and from there to the death camp at Chełmno nad Nerem. Chełmno was the first death camp and was followed by others in occupied Poland, Bełżec, Sobibór, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz. The village of Chełmno has not changed a great deal since those times. Many of the houses were used by the SS and their staff but Blobel chose not to use one of them, instead travelling from Łódź. He brought two men from Einsatzkommando 4a, Franz Halle and Wilhelm Tempel, as assistants. The aim of this was to find ways of exhuming and then burning the remains of murder victims. Various methods were tried. During WW1, Blobel had seen flamethrowers in action and this was tried out. In this decrypted message of 11 July 1942 to the SS Cavalry Brigade we can see his shopping list, and first on that list is a flamethrower.

I took a train from Warsaw to Minsk in 2010 with my daughter and my Polish cousin. Right in the city of Minsk was a mass grave of 5,000 men women and children. Out in the woods we visited one mass grave that has 10,000 men women and children.The pathway through the woods to that mass grave still have pine trees that the Germans forced Russian POWs to plant before then /executing them too. We also visited another site on the outskirts of Minsk that was used as a “roasting pit” as the Germans liked to call it of where the Germans forced Jewish men to pull out of the ground with their bare hands men women and children who had been shot and then throw the decaying bodies on the fire pit. We visited one small museum in the area of the Minks ghetto and the man there had a lot of the records of the Germans of all the trains schedules that transported Jewish men women and children from other parts of Europe. He could look up a train from say Vienna Austria on any date and tell you how many days the train took to get to Minsk. Germans love their detailed paperwork. A large majority of Jews murdered in Minsk were from Austria and Germany and there were grave sites in German, Russian, and Hebrew.I’m not surprised that the majority of these old German SS,SD and Police members got a few years or less in prison and then released back into German society. A lot of those German judges and lawyers were cut from the same cloth so they were obviously lenient on them. .A lot of those old Germans ( Austrians, Ukrainians,etc) got to live long lives and collect their pensions from the German government and talk about the “ good old days” with their fellow murderers while holding their grandkids on their knees! No justice!
That is a very good description Phil. It is not easy at all to get a visa for Belarus, even then in 2010 so you were very fortunate to be able to make the trip.

Thanks for the reply.Yes, it was a lot of paper work to be able to get a visa to visit Minsk even back in 2010. I would like to go again but obviously it would be impossible now. You might ask why would someone go to the woods around Minsk to visit woods and pits instead if a place like Italy, the Bahamas, etc,etc. Well, on September 14th 1942 my grandmother ( my mother’s mother) Julie Hahn Weiner was put on a cattle car and sent to Minsk. I told my daughter Julie who was 13 at the time that in one of these mass graves we visited was her great grandmother. It was the man at the ghetto museum in Minsk who had all the German train records . When I told him my grandmother was deported on September 14th 1942 to Minsk he looked it up in a large book and after turning numerous pages said “Ah yes , here it is, that train took 3 days to get to Minsk from Vienna”.. When you think about it, that’s three days of standing up crammed in a cattle car with no food , no water and no place to relieve yourself. At that time the Germans were sending 1,000. people a day from the Vienna ghetto. I remember years ago my mother saying…” I hope she suffocated on the train there”.. which I thought was very strange but when you think about what awaited these men women and children when they got there….
Not only did my grandmother get deported there and murdered but so were other family members from Vienna.My grandmother Julie was a seamstress who lived in Vienna. There were 24 immediate family members murdered by the Germans ( some were sent to other death camps) from my mother’s family the youngest was a little girl around 3 years old.
It’s nice when you can visit a regular cemetery to pay your respects at a neat cemetery with the rows of headstones but some people have no place to go, just numerous large pits in some faraway woods.I’m glad I went.

In the 1960 movie ‘Exodus’ refugee Dov Landau (played by actor Sal Mineo) had to confess to being a sonderkommando before being allowed to join the Israeli Irgun group. This is the work the SS forced him to do.
If the Sonderkommando Jews were not punished after the war, neither should the Germans who were forced to do the same thing/ ‘just following orders’. Yet we see (once again) a double standard at play.

@@damonmelendez856Um yeah, No. In the beginning Sonderkommando were killed at the end of each day. Gradually, the Germans got weary of training a new crop of slave workers each day and in at least some camps they kept them alive.
To address your point, no, there is no equivalency here between Jews being forced to bury and burn bodies at the end of a gun and a soldier who is given an unlawful order to murder civilians.

Enormous waste of time is right. It never happened. Makes no sense. It's a generic Jewish myth told over and over again in different locations. The thing is that everyone knew - including people who might not have known that killings had taken place. I interviewed people in Lubaczów about the corpse burning in 1943 and they complained of the stench - look at a map, Lubaczów is around 30km from Bełżec.

Yah, so this eve I became aware there is a new film out called THE ZONE OF INTEREST that dramatizes his family life there, feet away from all the sounds of the death camp And the smoke. The director is great, he has a previous movie I loved. Lots of critical buzz over the sound design and how it unnerves the viewer, the constant just right there feet away but not seen. I had not heard of the film. Hoess lived at Auschwitz with his family for nearly three years - indeed in his autobiography he states that the time he spent with his family there was very happy! It is strange to see how close his house was to the base camp.

You should do a video about the SONDER COMMANDOS at every Death Camp. They were the ones who cleaned out the gas chambers. As the doors were opened piles of corpses would need processing. At the bottom of the piles were the weak Jews, the babies on the bottom, the toddlers on the next level, and then stronger older Jews, grandmothers, and young children who were small in stature and therefore weak. The next layer would be the girls about 11 years old and small boys. Then another layer would be composed of women, frail but strong men, and older adult men. The top layer was the strongest of the bunch, the large men, the older teenage boys and girls. The bodies would be covered in piss, shit, vomit and snot.

There were thousands of pages of documents related to their execution methods along with pictures of piles of Zykon B containers stacked around the gas chambers. What do you think the NAZI'S used in the gas chambers? Fairy Farts??

By their own logic, Germany should have been totally wiped out for its failure in the racial struggle, as Hitler admitted in his last days, and as their propaganda falsely claimed was being prepared by the Allies, by turning an irrelevant crackpot like Nathan Kaufmann into the mythical advisor of Roosevelt! This lie and other typical propaganda also caused millions of unnecesary German deaths when the war was already clearly lost. Thus, after victory the Allies were proven to be morally far superior and benevolent than the human refuse you worship.

If the deniers were right, that it did not happen, and since they agree with the original Nazis' ideology - at least vast parts of it - then surely ext**minating the J**s root and branch would have been the right thing to do, hard though it might have been, right? @@rosesprog1722 you may want to look into the work of Patrick Desbois, a catholic priest that founded Yahad in Unum. They started documenting the killing sites of the "holocaust by bullets" and recording witness testimonies in the early 2000´s. There are also a number of videos on YT featuring Patrick Desbois. A lot of the witnesses mention that the graves were moving for some time after the killings.

@@winstonwolfe340 Thank you, I saw a lecture about this on YT maybe a year ago, it was likely Mr. Desbois indeed. When it comes to WW2, witnesses and German war crimes, the truth is extremely difficult to filter out of the official narrative, which is, of course tainted by all sorts of distortions, the most accepted but clearly impossible being that everything the Germans did was evil and that the allies committed no crimes whatsoever. That led to a lot of crimes committed by the local populations of Eastern Europe being blamed on the Germans, an easy escape from one's responsibilities that the western world was willing to believe without asking for the traditional need for evidence. I will look for Mr. Desbois on YT but when it comes to witness testimony in Eastern Europe, I have grown to be extremely skeptical, a good example of such distortions is that Germans were accused and executed at the Nuremberg trials for the mass murders of Katyn forest. I may be counter current, I know that but without evidence other than one's usually biased testimony based on memories of events that happened 80 years ago, I still and will always remain skeptical, in any court of law except Nuremberg, witness testimony is not considered trustworthy enough to condemn someone to death, the same requirements should condition public opinion but since WW2, the concept of logical deduction has been dropped, in favor of belief of any story, many of which make no sense whatsoever, we were fed a regime of lies, and we lost the capability to ask for evidence, a dangerous circumstance in which lies are believed, and the truth is carefully hidden, that's where we are now. Is it possible that people covered by a thick layer of soil, unable to breathe would still be moving days after being entered? Decomposition doesn't start before days and I don't think it can move the earth enough for people to actually see it move, so it's difficult to accept as told. But thanks, I will look into it.

You do know that the (Soviet-times) memorial at Babii Yar isn't at the site of the massacre - the real ravine site is about a mile away? Also: Syrets concentration camp was only set up after the Babii Yar massacre, in early 1942.
The site of the massacre is shown in this video, you will notice that there is no memorial there. Furthermore the dates make it quite clear that Syrets was set up later in the occupation.
@@HistoryonUA-cam You're right, the ravine is shown at the start of the video, I wanted to make it clear that the big - and impressive - Soviet monument is, almost literally, miles away. It originally noted only the murder of "citizens of Kyiv" - no mention of "Jewish" citizens (typically Soviet, by the way). Now there are three plaques of the foot of the memorial - one russian (now Ukrainian?), one in English, one in Hebrew. There is, though, a large menorah (30' or longer) and a small Russian Orthodox chapel very close to the ravine itself, along with a couple of minor memorials. You say at one point that prisoners from Syrets concentration camp were detailed for a task at a time when that camp didn't yet exist, though.

We’ve all heard the tall tales of soap made out of human fat, the lampshades from skin, etc. I’d really like to hear about the camp orchestra, football team, the brothel. The swimming pool. Which had a diving board. That’s not to say it wasn’t a horrible experience for those privileged 1% who were used to every luxury known in Europe. Someone in the 1% would indeed be traumatized from daily hard manual work.
