We all know bike manufacturers do not invest in after sales, result, Local bike shops are disconnected and fail. With questionable reliability of new high tech stuff coupled to a 100 year old chain breaking derailleur makes bike shops even more necessary. So many motors now to choose from, yet no unified motor mount, happy with being locked in? Yes guys, things will get better, stand by for E-CVT, super efficient gear-less transmission, less mechanical downtime, something to look forward to!
The trick? Done be a clumsy oaf and break the chain. Learn how to shift, and when to shift. Keep a fresh chain on the bike. The panic over chains is vastly over stated. A new chain is 18.00, 10 minutes to install at most.
@1:17 It's not W / h => watt per hour, it should be watt times hour :) (for style purposes IMO it is OK to write all capital... but "perfect" is " Wh ")
Except no one really wants to own a Shimano system ebike... In Hungary there were a lot of guys who missed a whole summer season, because their motor broke, and there was no available replacement motor for several months... I bought my 2nd Bosch system bike now because of the very good service chain, although nothing broke on any of them so far.
I have this bike, i loved it. However, it's got a few issues. 1, it has a creaky front end that DOES NOT go away. 2. My bike, on the 3rd ride, failed and would not turn back on. It is currently in the shop. To Canyon's credit, they're going to reimburse the service cost. My bike is just over a month old.
Did Steve pay full RRP for his Canyon? Seems like yet ANOTHER ad to me, this channel care only about 1 thing, keeping manufacturers happy. Sad thing is that it's not the industry that's proving you with your views, it's people buying this stuff, this stuff that's not being "reviewed" honestly or fairly
Buy from your LBS, unfortunately ebikes fail quite a bit, you don't wanna be stuck in online support for weeks without being able to ride your bike. Sucks but pay a lil extra and avoid head aches
Interesting to see how you can upgrade the Shimano motor if you want, some good spec of Canyon ebike for price, some not bad deals on at moment thanks for episode Embn 😁
biggest issue with this bike is that it uses a non standard battery, can you get a replacement battery in a few years time? probably not, i've heard you can't buy a spare battery right now even!
I have the spectral on cfr ltd with 720wh battery because of the size of the frame, but nothing to complain, it's pretty enough. The cut off system isn't available yet, at least i don't have, bike was in lbs to update.
When you say customizable via App, this is not yet correct. The update of the App to support the new features is still pending and without it the new features are pretty useless. I was able to install the new firmware on the EP801 already a couple of months ago, but without the app supporting it, I cannot utilize it which is quite a bummer. And no announcement for the App update on the horizon :( Really sad. If you know more when the App update will be released, give me some light at the end of the waiting tunnel :)
Obce you had the pleasure to deal with their after market service you never spend a ct anymore with this company. At least that’s my take away from dealing with them in the past
Canyon charges £70 for delivery despite being online only, so surely postage should be included? Also their batteries are proprietary so may be hard to replace in the future. Most of the time the 'from' price just isn't available either. Not saying I wouldn't buy one but this puts me off somewhat
Canyon batteries are Shimano batteries. Not hard to find. No EMTB will be worth owning 7 years down the road, they will be quaint antiques. Worth about zip.
Nope the 720wh & 900wh batteries are Canyon proprietary. The vast majority of ebikes today will still be perfectly good in 7 years but batteries don't last forever so their availability should be good e.g. a standard Shimano battery will more likely be available than any proprietary part
'Shimano tech' lol what? They're Shimano approved batteries, designed & made for Canyon and sold exclusively by Canyon who can choose to stop making them whenever they wish. Standard Shimano batteries are available from various outlets & probably Shimano directly. Even if/when Shimano stop making them, there will likely be stock floating around for a long time & because they're more common there will likely be companies who'll know how to repair them. Not to mention the fact Canyon batteries are absurdly more expensive than standard Shimano ones. You must work for Canyon if you're trying to convince people (or yourself) that proprietary batteries are in any way a good thing
One month later this add ,canyon send me a mail ,saying ,dont ride your bike is a bomb, danger default batteries ,waiting to december for answers and news ,one month at the moment cant ride ,incredible ,i am so sad 😢and the waranty of bike run on time if i dont ride?..?!!!
Canyon has great e-bikes, no doubt there - and you get a lot for the money. Shimano motors...we can discuss there.Ep8 has very good, natural feeling, everything works fine - but when it dies, then you can have a serious loooong way to get a new one. That is something Shimano must think about. Who wants to wait for month or two for a bike repair? I hope Shimano also improved something with new update for EP801, because first version of a motor was in compare with Bosch, Yamaha, Brose etc...slower, much slower. You could loose 4-5 minutes on a 30 minutes steep uphill. So, all that doesn¨t mean, that EP801 is a bad motor, it could be the best, if they improve speed of repair time and like you said, the new update alredy made it great on preformance too.
There are a lot of Shimano motors for sale on ebay, and elsewhere. Easy to come by. Prices have come down to where a new motor is a better idea than a rebuild. EP8 makes 75 NM, same as many other motors. Try boost mode.
From what I’ve seen and read, Shimano’s software updates make the performance improvements but with reliability issues and the inflexible hardware service, it’s not currently a great investment 🙄
ep8 -> no. Unless it comes with 2-3 extra motors, for when your bike shop manages to get a new one in 2-3-4 months from Shimano. ... every 1000-1500km - if you are lucky.
The answer is NO 😂. This turned out to be a pretty underwhelming video. It feels like we’re having Canyons rammed down our throats, just pretending this is editorial content, with minor coverage of some Merida’s. This should have been a video looking at the best deals on the market, I’d have expected 10-20 emtbs from a variety of brands and around 5 different motors. Instead of a video about the EP801. (Being able to upgrade the motor with software is a fair point but this is a small percentage of the market).
Nice so they advertise a bike a month before canyon send to the customers they should stop using this specific bike for at least 6 months :D Canyon knows about this problem from at least end of 2022 when first cases of cracked battery casings appears on emtb forum.. or maybe even earlier?
I’d be careful with this bike as it is ticking time bomb of planned obsolescence’s, once the battery is dead that’s it you can’t get another. Canyon will not sell you a spare
Unless you're doing a massive recharge each day I don't think that's a problem at all, even if you did you'd still have 75%-80% after two years of use. I'll agree that nothing should have non replaceable batteries (is it the case for the bike in this video tho?) , regardless of the use case. Even on mobile phones it should be mandatory to have batteries that ar most requires a screwdriver to be replaced
according to the law of the European Union, every electric bicycle manufacturer must provide all spare parts for a minimum of six years, and this includes the battery as well.
Not much would convince me to buy a bike with a Shimano motor. Nothing against the brand, or the drivetrains, I'd have Shimano groupsets and brakes any day. But the stories I've heard about warranty repairs/replacements on the Shimano motors and batteries are far too numerous and shocking to ignore, including waits up to 6 months. Stuff that. A total deal breaker, especially on direct sales brands like canyon. Search the web if you don't believe me.
until you need to deal w their costumer support and they reveal that are has useful has a flat spare tire, a brand that doesn't care about consumers needs to go bankrupt
Some EMTB riders must be frustrated dirt bike riders, if you want POWER, Get some power, get a quiet smooth easy to ride 300 XCW KTM. But seriously Ive had a Canyon Spectral ON CF8 with the regular CF8 motor, if there's a problem I havent seen it. Can run boost mode for 4 hours yee hawing around up mountains. It works great just as delivered. The power, is in your legs. I ride amish road/gravel/mt bike much more than EMTB. Im happy to supply power. Your results may vary. (one thing with all these EMTB's? keep them out of the water) Friends have shown water to be a serious nemesis of these expensive things. Unlike a dirtbike.

Agree. Canyon have terrible after sales care. I’ve found this out the hard way. Bikes are nice but you better get ready for frustration if something goes wrong
@@guyhendo That was my exact experience, but with Specialized. I would never, ever, even consider another Specialized bike. Bike had problems, they denied it, did nothing.
Used my Propain Ekano AL1 for 3 seasons now and had a total of 0 problems. Beyond stoked, it feels like every km i ride now is like a bonus but it still feels like new.
My mate has cracked 2 Torque Ons in the same place (at the motor mount) - they refuse to admit there’s an manuf. issue and are blaming his ‘riding style’. Ridiculous. There are others on the Fb group with the same failure.
@PeakTorque cracked around the bottom bracket on my Strive. Told there was "an external influence, not warranty " and that was it. Good job the insurance paid out
I got my Trek rail 9.8 Gx axs generation 4 on sale for 6500 dollar in lava red with cx line 750w. What a bike it is.
6500 is not a bargain bike what so ever. It had better work well.
@@bradsanders6954 for rail it is.
@@bradsanders6954 It is for rail. You dont what you are talking about. CFR 7 costs 1k less than the rail i bought and you get full carbon frame, better base specs and also bosch cx line with integrated smart system. You carbon frame with life warranty and local store support which you dont with canyon. Also you you get a ten times better looking bike than spectral in the same pricerange.
Now if you look at the top models. New Rail + 9.9 comes only 3k more expensive than highest end spectral and trumps the spectral in components and specs and looks. Is 3k worth that? Opinions, but for me yeah. Bosch cx>shimano any day.
I brought a haibike allmtn 10 and you just can’t beat it for the price and specs!
Not the best video now seeing how owners have just been emailed to say that the batteries are dangerous and have told us to stop riding the bikes and wait for Canyon to contact us which is going to take at least 4 weeks…..
While a nice bike, the deal of the decade is the current special Yamaha has on the Moro 07. In the US for $2500 with a five year warranty and a free extra battery....
You got my vote
My friend just got one and it feels cheap and needs suspension upgrade I think
@@dshow1658 What model did they get? The moro 07 comes with very high end suspension. The CrossCore not so much.
Same creaky noise on both spectrals we bought. Both bikes had very dry headsets, once lubed up noise went away.
Is Canyon really tell the LBS how much they pay for the repair or is it a myth and they pay full quote?
@@sheldongardner6817 same here. But had this issue (dry headsets) with all other new bikes within the past ten years.
@@ThomasHubik they reimburse you for the cost.
@@stefankaufmann2340 i'll have the shop do a quick headset maintenance while its there
Did Steve pay full RRP for his Canyon?
Seems like yet ANOTHER ad to me, this channel care only about 1 thing, keeping manufacturers happy.
Sad thing is that it's not the industry that's proving you with your views, it's people buying this stuff, this stuff that's not being "reviewed" honestly or fairly
Hi, the embn audience is hungry for bikes that are not five figures...hence we made this video.
No service problem in UK with Canyon's service partners who I have found excellent
That's what we thought, there are some cracking deals out there at the moment. Thanks for watching!
What are the best eMTB expos to attend in the UK?
Rich, did you ride the trails in the woods above the cafe here?
biggest issue with this bike is that it uses a non standard battery, can you get a replacement battery in a few years time? probably not, i've heard you can't buy a spare battery right now even!
I have the spectral on cfr ltd with 720wh battery because of the size of the frame, but nothing to complain, it's pretty enough. The cut off system isn't available yet, at least i don't have, bike was in lbs to update.
I was going to leave a comment regarding this Shimano upgrade / Canyon advertisement, but can see others have beat me to it. Ugh.
Gasgas ebikes are an amazing deal now. I could buy two gasgas ebikes for the price of this bike!!
@@bradsanders6954 the 720wh and 900wh batteries are Canyon proprietary, not Shimano standard batteries
Nope the 720wh & 900wh batteries are Canyon proprietary. The vast majority of ebikes today will still be perfectly good in 7 years but batteries don't last forever so their availability should be good e.g. a standard Shimano battery will more likely be available than any proprietary part
@@add2k Your assuming Canyon is going out of business I guess? The tech in Canyon batteries is shimano.
Waste of time for Australians as Canyon don’t even have the decency to sell e-bikes here. No wonder Moi Moi left them.
Ive seen a couple of cracked carbon canyon frames. They dont do alloy at all?
There are alloy versions of the Canyon Spectral:ON on their website 👍
@@embnthis is not real ,spectral models is only on carbón
I stopped looking when I saw the cable routing went into the headset , and the shimano motor 😬
Motor parts consumables is hard to buy... Like gears... After sales is so poor in regards of spare parts..
ep8 -> no. Unless it comes with 2-3 extra motors, for when your bike shop manages to get a new one in 2-3-4 months from Shimano. ... every 1000-1500km - if you are lucky.
I have a spectral on and torque on. Fantastic bikes. These bikes out price anything else out there, with the performance to back it up.
This seems to be an advert for Shimano.. paid for by Shimano?
This video isn't paid promotion for anyone as Rich stated at the start of the video 👌
Nahhhh!!!!! AMFLOW.
The Amflow is great but slightly more pricey than the bikes featured in this video!
Battery dropper!
Yamaha has the best deal for the moro at the moment.
No thanks. But keep driving prices down Canyon!
...relatively speaking. There's yer problem. You know that most of your audience actually buys their own bikes, don't you?
Nice so they advertise a bike a month before canyon send to the customers they should stop using this specific bike for at least 6 months :D
Canyon knows about this problem from at least end of 2022 when first cases of cracked battery casings appears on emtb forum.. or maybe even earlier?
Can't even buy Canyon ebikes in Aus
I’d be careful with this bike as it is ticking time bomb of planned obsolescence’s, once the battery is dead that’s it you can’t get another. Canyon will not sell you a spare
You can buy spare batteries from canyons website
@@oxygencubenot now you can’t
Unless you're doing a massive recharge each day I don't think that's a problem at all, even if you did you'd still have 75%-80% after two years of use.
I'll agree that nothing should have non replaceable batteries (is it the case for the bike in this video tho?) , regardless of the use case. Even on mobile phones it should be mandatory to have batteries that ar most requires a screwdriver to be replaced
@@SB-dv8ihah yes 900w are sold out on euro website. Available in the US though.
according to the law of the European Union, every electric bicycle manufacturer must provide all spare parts for a minimum of six years, and this includes the battery as well.
Gleichner Vista
Shame about the batteries
Not much would convince me to buy a bike with a Shimano motor. Nothing against the brand, or the drivetrains, I'd have Shimano groupsets and brakes any day. But the stories I've heard about warranty repairs/replacements on the Shimano motors and batteries are far too numerous and shocking to ignore, including waits up to 6 months. Stuff that. A total deal breaker, especially on direct sales brands like canyon. Search the web if you don't believe me.
Heard exactly the same
Does anyone else find this guy's voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard or is it just me?
It's just you.
I tried the ep801 on a propain and i thought it was incredibly draggy. If i turned the motor off i couldnt get past 7kph
They are all to heavy and bulky. Its like a tank with 24 kg. Thats why i sold mine. My kenevo sl with 19kg is heavy enough.
I'll get some of the 18 kilos ebikes, funny enough how suddenly the weight of these is not important, come one you must be really funny?
Skye Mall
until you need to deal w their costumer support and they reveal that are has useful has a flat spare tire, a brand that doesn't care about consumers needs to go bankrupt
"only"4k pounds...

Working on your fitness and riding a normal bike is better for medical bills, life expectancy, and the bike itself.
Your results may vary.

why would anyone ride such a heavy bike
Ill stick with my 1440wh battery and 160nm torque
