      And if you are okay with online sales and living in europe, check for radon, they are basically cube bikes, but with a even better price point (exclusively made for one online shop), they use bosch motors in general, with cx gen4 you get really great offers, sometimes with fit4 instead of grip2, but thats not necessarily a downside for people who just want to ride and don't want to spend too much time on a perfect setup

    I don't get why GMBN/EMBN etc all still follow this Sesame Street/tabloid dumbed down script of presenting information. So many videos reads like it was made for an 10 year old to comprehend. Case in point: 1:05 - "[This bike is a great all rounder. From all-day epics, bikeparks, shred singletrack, berms, turns and jumps and everything in between]". Yeah so does the majority of all other MTBs electric or otherwise. Hell my gravel bike can technically do these things. A is for Apple, B is for Banana. About as "ad like" as you can get a video. Literally 6 minutes of regurgitating the press release.

    • @stevejones7956
      @stevejones7956 3 місяці тому

      Let's chat. I loved Sesame Street. I think it's important that we dont presume knowledge on our videos. This video was an introduction to an upgrade that many might have missed, and bikes at great prces. I dont actually see where your press release comparison comes from? But like i said, let's chat if you're not happy and want something a bit more in depth, i'm happy to chat here all day or in person about anything related to emtbs

    • @lenolenoleno
      @lenolenoleno 3 місяці тому +2

      @@stevejones7956 Thanks for the response.
      I actually like your presenting style (especially as time as gone on). You're comparatively much more forthright, and present an actual personal opinion based on your professional background (and the insights that come with it).
      Your earlier work was at times evangelical (i.e. eMTBS are the only bikes worth riding) which old mate Henry Quinney mentioned in a video back in the day with you. Since then I've really enjoyed your work e.g. video with Blake on you riding hardtails. Instead of brown nosing the UA-cam comments section (because YT comments section is often one big tall poppy syndrome melting pot) you righty highlighted where hardtails aren't "the best" and called it out (which you can see how that kind of unsettled Blake because that raw honesty wasn't expected). Your recent videos on motor comparison where you are highlighting how it "feels" and where one is > than the other in X situation vs. simply saying 'they're all sick'. Fantastic. A lot of earlier EMBN tech videos were like 90% of what I'd learn reading a press release (this one included). Listen to the words Rich is saying - nothing about it is from his personal experience. You could literally transplant a non-MTBer, put them in some baggies and it would be the same identical script (let alone a professional MTB presenter). No opinions on what is the better value model, no insight as to what improvements to the EP801 are more significant. E.g. 6:04 "There's auto-shift and it's customisable". Yeah and? Was it useful? How did it actually play out on the trail? Nothing.
      See: 3:00 - "[ amazing that you can get this for 4,000 GBP and under, maybe it's a massive oversight on Canyon's part it's that good of a deal!]". Yeah one of the largest bicycle companies with 1,000's of SKUs in their bicycle catalogue make a set-in-stone clerical error in calculating their margins and are as good as 'giving these away'. Sesame Street. Groan.
      It's more a comment on many (not all) videos produced. I groan when another "cheap vs. expensive" video comes out and the presenters open with the line "does this 15,000 bike ride 10x better than this 1,500 bike" when anyone with half a brain would know value for money doesn't scale linearly. So instead of tech editors giving nuanced, professional insight (e.g. an alloy dually with entry level Fox is the sweet spot and the overwhelming majority of riders are holding that bike back) you get this basic ad-read journalism again and again.
      I think there's something to be gained from seeing the magic of what other nuanced non-commercial UA-camr channels are doing like Dale Stone (in terms of entertainment + technical) or say Jeff Kendell-Weed (entertainment with personal experiences).
      Hope that's some helpful feedback.

      @@russellely the main value an LBS has in modern day MTB society is being your advocate and dealing with the manufactures when chit breaks, saving you time and money. They have pull with the reps to get that broken part taken care of under warranty. And chit will break as we all know. I just had a Rockshox Reverb Dropper fail again. LBS took care of it with SRAM and two weeks later its back costing me little time and zero coin. Flipped it on ebay and got a Oneup dropper…wooo. Agreed, if your LBS is worthless kick em to the curb. Most good LBS make their money on service tunes anyway. Things are even being engineered now adays as “no special tools required”. The non value added LBS with become extinct soon.

    Shimano. I rode one, EP8 for a while. Little over 3000km (2000 miles). Had a motor failure, was replaced goodwill, but the thought lingered. If it wasn't covered. I would have had to recycle the battery, remove the parts, and throw the rest of the bike right in the trash. Imagine.
    Bosch. Bosch gen 5 or BDU5 is coming. All the Gen 4 bikes will be discounted, no brainer. By the way, the new Haibike Allmtn, with the gen, is $5k. That 4k Canyon or anything else "EP" series is not a bargain, considering you're paying for borrowing time.

    Canyon has great e-bikes, no doubt there - and you get a lot for the money. Shimano motors...we can discuss there.Ep8 has very good, natural feeling, everything works fine - but when it dies, then you can have a serious loooong way to get a new one. That is something Shimano must think about. Who wants to wait for month or two for a bike repair? I hope Shimano also improved something with new update for EP801, because first version of a motor was in compare with Bosch, Yamaha, Brose etc...slower, much slower. You could loose 4-5 minutes on a 30 minutes steep uphill. So, all that doesn¨t mean, that EP801 is a bad motor, it could be the best, if they improve speed of repair time and like you said, the new update alredy made it great on preformance too.

      There are a lot of Shimano motors for sale on ebay, and elsewhere. Easy to come by.
      Prices have come down to where a new motor is a better idea than a rebuild.
      EP8 makes 75 NM, same as many other motors. Try boost mode.

    From what I’ve seen and read, Shimano’s software updates make the performance improvements but with reliability issues and the inflexible hardware service, it’s not currently a great investment 🙄

    ep8 -> no. Unless it comes with 2-3 extra motors, for when your bike shop manages to get a new one in 2-3-4 months from Shimano. ... every 1000-1500km - if you are lucky.

    The answer is NO 😂. This turned out to be a pretty underwhelming video. It feels like we’re having Canyons rammed down our throats, just pretending this is editorial content, with minor coverage of some Merida’s. This should have been a video looking at the best deals on the market, I’d have expected 10-20 emtbs from a variety of brands and around 5 different motors. Instead of a video about the EP801. (Being able to upgrade the motor with software is a fair point but this is a small percentage of the market).

      I'll agree that nothing should have non replaceable batteries (is it the case for the bike in this video tho?) , regardless of the use case. Even on mobile phones it should be mandatory to have batteries that ar most requires a screwdriver to be replaced

    Not much would convince me to buy a bike with a Shimano motor. Nothing against the brand, or the drivetrains, I'd have Shimano groupsets and brakes any day. But the stories I've heard about warranty repairs/replacements on the Shimano motors and batteries are far too numerous and shocking to ignore, including waits up to 6 months. Stuff that. A total deal breaker, especially on direct sales brands like canyon. Search the web if you don't believe me.

    Some EMTB riders must be frustrated dirt bike riders, if you want POWER, Get some power, get a quiet smooth easy to ride 300 XCW KTM.
    But seriously Ive had a Canyon Spectral ON CF8 with the regular CF8 motor, if there's a problem I havent seen it. Can run boost mode for 4 hours yee hawing around up mountains. It works great just as delivered. The power, is in your legs.
    I ride amish road/gravel/mt bike much more than EMTB. Im happy to supply power. Your results may vary.
