- Globally, surgeons performed more than 20 million cosmetic procedures last year. South Korea, a country of about 50 million people, accounted for nearly a million of them. It reportedly has the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita. Seth Doane visited Seoul to look at the country's $5 billion dollar a year industry.

no there are a lot of naturally stunning Koreans. The Korean celebrities voted most beautiful by Koreans never had surgery: Kim Tae Hee, Son Hye Ko, Han Ga In, and Sandara Park. Plastic faces look really bad in person and can never beat natural beauty.

Its because back then rich korean men married beautiful women (and back then plastic surgery didn't exist) so the kids turned out beautiful. I know lots of naturally beautiful koreans born into wealthy families and the mom is always stunning. Theres no money spent because naturally beautiful ppl don't get surgery.

Yeah Japanese plastic surgery rates are also high and actually do more procedures than South Korea, and also so many Chinese come to Korea to get surgery.

Well, it's one thing I was never proud of as a South Korean. It was a common mindset to follow the crowd and most especially trends. If having pale white skin has stuck around for generations, you bet it's still a popular thought today. And what he said is true: since almost everyone gets good grades back there, the next thing people are judged for is their looks. I always get complimented on my height and "small face" by other older Koreans in America, which I receive thankfully but I still wondered why that was so when I was too young to understand beauty standards. The situation was really bad, there was a LAW (yeah, A LAW) passed to ban profile pictures in job resumes so no judgment on physical appearance would be taken into consideration. And as much freedom there is for everyone has to their choices, it's a cultural issue that I've dealt with before I even passed the second year of middle school. I was stuck with so much pressure and insecurity after seeing Ulzzangs for the first time on s.m, and I had this whole plan for tweaking my face and skin whitening if I went to South Korea (which wouldn't have happened with my parents anyway). But a few things have changed in South Korea over the years since this news report, at least from the few discussions I've heard and seen. Still, if I took this out of a personal cultural discussion, people could take plastic surgery as a regret they look back to or a way to boost their confidence. Either way, they should be able to move forward with their choice.

Think they misrepresented that show. I've seen it before. The show only takes on people who have severe facial deformities or issues, aka someone who actually is being held back by their looks. They've done people with huge underbite jaw deformities to a girl who was legit missing an eye.

They do not want to look like undeveloped teenagers, it's just a very conservative country. They wear shorts which are considered too short in western countries, however they don't show their cleavage as it is considered indecent (reverse standards). *TL;DR: A matter of cultural and social differences, which varies amongst the many Asian countries*

Ok but most of their examples were people with legitimate facial deformities, asymmetries and skeletal malocclusions. This type of work is life-changing for those patients and is a testament to the surgical prowess of these doctors.
At the same time, it makes the Situation for people with assymetries etc worse who can not afford surgery.
Best would without any doubt be a society that is Not that superficial and where we do not judge people as much by the way they look.
Surgery can still be an option for people with insecurities after they tried their best to deal with it in other ways, tried to accept themselves the way they are.
But that is the only scenario where plastic surgery, surgery for the sake of looking "better", is senseful.

Beauty shouldn't be affecting every single thing people do. I mean, they are necessary for people who needs to fix their face in order to live properly, but people shouldn't have greediness to become the 'perfect and beautiful' person. I kind of disagree with plastic surgery since I see more and more people looking the same and kind of awkward by plastic surgery... People should be satisfied with how they look like and the society shouldn't determine the class of a person only by their physical aspect. South Korea really needs to change their way of thinking, including me. All that matters is a good and desirable personality no matter how we look like.

MOST Koreans don't get plastic surgery though. The statistic is 1 in 5 Korean women had plastic surgery but that still means 80% of Korean women did not get plastic surgery. Yes, a lot of people may get plastic surgery but it's still a minority.

MLxSuGaR um it’s not that hard to tell if someone has something like Botox or the fat graft. In the case of Botox for example a general way to see if a person has it is to look at their forehead. People with Botox don’t have the forehead wrinkles as much. There’s probably loads of ways to figure out who has surgery and who doesn’t

Why do they want to look Euro-Japanese descent so badly? I can understand the severe stuff like the jaw and maybe some moles or something but such drastic changes to your face it's like it's not you anymore and whoever has kids with you, those kids won't genetically look like you. You won't even be able to tell if your baby has your eyes or nose or mannerisms.
Korean are more open minded when it comes to plastic surgery unlike Americans who hating Kardashians because of their lip fillers and botox but they don't know how bizzare Korean beauty standard is that you will get judge being ugly not for having surgery. In Japan there's an 8 year old kid who went double eyelid surgery because her mom wants it. though the kid say she wants it but I doubt I guess it's the mother who wants her daughter to go under knife just for the sake of being called pretty.
In korean most celebrity and idols undergo plastic surgery and it's very common. You should expect it even if the person is already beautiful but they want to look perfect.
I haven't seen any euro-japanese person who looks like that, euro-japanese people tend to look full asian or More like most hispanic people just look at the youtuber called anime man . Sorry but it seems like people who get ps in Korea do these kind of surgeries to Look like gray aliens👽 they do not even look human anymore with those extremely shrunken faces and big eyes.

they will undergo plastic surgery too because plastic surgery is very normal to the point that you can gift someone a double eyelid surgery or rhinoplasty as graduation gift or birthday gift. People in Korea will not judge you if you have plastic surgery, you will get judge if youre ugly. That's the sad reality.
If you ask Korean what qualities of partner they want to date no one will answer you about good characteristics they focus more on physical appearance they will answer like they want pale lady, with double eyelid, fit has long and healthy hair and so on. Because I've watch lot of Korean Dating show, vlog, videos and Celebrities in korea answering that questions.
Im always proud to my face though I'm not beautiful. This is the gift of my Lord and I should be proud of it and never feel shame

if they have health issues caused by their facial structure (eg their jaw shape disables them to chew food) then its acceptable but the main problem here is people in korea have set this kind of beauty standard to the point that ugly people are being discriminated (i heard they recruit employees based on looks) this has to stop

I alter my mind everyday, i think its tome i fix my annoying nose because it will help my confidence. I was born with depression so i dont feel confident becausw my mind is sadly just wired that way.

Sometimes when u need it, go for it. Because i know some surgeries are for those who got their face crashed during an accident or etc. But we all still have to respect the one who chooses plastic surgery bcz we got different opinions, we chase for different things so no one is right or wrong. Its pretty common thing in korea, its their culture(?). They got high beauty standards, even some kpop idols have done it so far, its really no big deal.

My problem with plastic surgery is that youre not solving the problem by fixing your exterior. You have to fix the inside to be truly satisfied. When youre that insecure about how you look, changing your face isnt going to help. You'll just keep finding things that you think are ugly and keep changing your appearance over and over again and you'll never be satisfied with the way you look. Especially since ideal appearances change with time. I know a little bit about Korean culture and I know that plastic surgery is expected there, but I kind of think it is a blemish on the culture just like American capitalism is a blemish on our culture.
You can use plastic to fix anything else,but you can't use it to fix an ugly personality haha.

Britt Whalen For planned procedures, it isn't as much of a worry if you pause to do something else. In emergency rooms, you must be constantly attentive, but in controlled cases like this it's okay to look away to talk for a minute or so. Being an anesthesiologist, I would know.

Plastic surgery is needed for certain cases like burn victims or like with deformities that hinder you from doing basic activities But It Is A Big No No when You Just Want To Fit In Or Just For Vanity Purpose. Most Of The Time, The Result Is Not Natural and Very peculiar Looking. It Is Bec It Is Man Made..only God Can Create such perfection! Also, If You Look At Naturally Beautiful People, They have Features That Are Obviously Not Perfect But It goes Perfectly well With Their Other Features. If It Was Done By man, all Features will Look Perfect But When Put Together, It Is A Disaster
