    The actors playing mr bronson and danny kendall were good friends in real life apparently, you wouldnt think so looking at these scenes lol. Some top class acting on display from them both.

      I wonder if the actor playing Kendall is a 'Star Wars' fan and might've been enthusiastic about acting with Admiral Ozzel.

      Grange hill challenged some real disturbing issues in society no other programme dared to talk about, least of all for a childrens show, thats why it was so groundbreaking in its day. Sadly this was the last great era for me before it went downhill and became too safe and PC.

    There was a lad at our school who thought his family name would strike terror into anyone's heart. One day he got into a slanging match with Mr. Kibblewhite, who stood at a strapping 6'6". The lad - whose name I totally forget now - threatened to get his dad and brothers in to the school...
    Kibblewhite stood up from his desk, looked the boy straight in the eye, and said, "Bring it on!"
    True story, that...
    You'd never see something like that these days, where teachers are all afraid of their charges...
    Thank you, Mr. Kibblewhite.
    Blessèd be /|\

    • @kpopfan674
      @kpopfan674 Місяць тому

      @@craigmullen9046 Only that's not what happened. First off, there have been problems for centuries - look up the Scuttlers for example, and the Mods and Rockers. Second, there is discipline available - it's just that people from a background of using violence (or it being used against them), such as spanking / smacking, often don't understand how to discipline without it. And finally, whilst there is need for discipline at times, most kids are inherently good - the important thing is to get them to understand why something is wrong.
      Two examples: I volunteered in a primary school When the kids misbehaved, I asked them how they would feel if I did that to them. They answered "sad". I asked them so how do they think I feel? And they stopped.
      I saw kids smashing bottles on the floor. I get it, it's fun, the feel and the sound. But I warned them that what they were doing could hurt cats who might walk on the glass. The one who heard me shouted to his friend about it and they both stopped.
      It's obviously illegal to hit them but in none of those cases did I feel the need to or think it would be good if I could use violence. Are there extreme cases where it might be necessary, such as to save someone? Sure. Should it be used routinely? No.

    Was Bronson the best character on Grange Hill ever?

  • @goodlife6145
    @goodlife6145 4 роки тому +11

    Bronson was such a great part of GH. He was so at odds with the liberal approach of the school system, so you always got a bit of tension when he was involved in a scene, whether with other teachers or pupils. It was also good how they redeemed over time him somewhat, after the death of Danny Kendall.

    Michael Sheard: Mr Bronson, Adolf Hitler and Admiral Ozzel.
    Michael Sheard was a great guy and fascinating to talk to. He was from quite near to me and met him many times at conventions and local events. I once spoke to him for over two hours at a small role-playing event. He told me he would happily speak to me all day, provided I bought his book, so I pretty much held him to it. 😁I still have the signed copy of the book that I bought.
    He even, very generously, gave me the opportunity to take the role of Darth Vader while he re-created the death of Admiral Ozzel on stage at a convention. He used to carry his Star Wars Admiral Ozzel collectible card with a message from George Lucas written on it. The message was something like "to the worst Admiral in the imperial fleet", a message that he was clearly very proud of.
    Mr Sheard told me a great story: he was attending a screening (premiere?) of The Empire Strikes back in the UK, and when Admiral Ozzel first appeared on screen, someone in the audience yelled "f*ck me, it's Mr Bronson", such was the power of the character.
    A great guy and sadly missed.

    Bronson's problem was he was too old fashioned and didn't realise kids in the late eighties were rather different to ones from 20 or 30 years earlier. I think he did hound Danny too much and had a vendetta against Ant Jones and was lucky not to lose his job.

    What exactly was Bronson's problem especially with Kendal?

    • @Ul.B
      @Ul.B 11 місяців тому +1

      A major problem with Danny Kendall was quite simply that he didn't always do what was expected of him. So he just disappeared from class, wandered around the school building, didn't take the teachers' orders seriously, even disobeyed the teachers' orders, such as when Mrs. Reagan ordered him to go to Mr. Baxter and proved in Mr. Bronson's eyes to be unreliable and like someone who only did what pleased him in this situation. Such students are considered difficult cases and this has not changed compared to the past. With such difficult students, the teacher or school administration quickly seeks a one-on-one conversation and/or a conversation with the parents to make it clear what is expected of the pupil in question.

    The paradox of teachers like Mr Bronson, they hate kids but work with them. Discipline is one thing but being a bully is another. I crossed paths teachers similar to Bronson 35 years ago whilst at school. One of them loved to humiliate kids.

    • @timrollpickering
      @timrollpickering 3 роки тому +3

      The paradox of Mr Bronson specifically is easy to understand. He's only working at Grange Hill because of wider changes to school structures in the area rather than setting out to teach there. He arrived when Grange Hill merged with Rodney Bennett and Brookdale. From the little we saw of Rodney Bennett in the early years it seemed to be a once grammar school that still maintained the ethos after the 11 plus was abolished whilst Grange Hill would presumably have been a secondary modern before comprehensivisation. Bronson had been a Latin master at RB and doubtless a staunch supporter of continuing the traditions.
      Then the two schools merge (along with another) and his subject was abolished. He was of an age where teachers (a term he probably hated; traditionally in grammar schools it was "masters") are generally looking towards their last internal promotions rather than changing schools so there would have been little prospect of finding another school to be a senior Latin master at. He may also have been tied to the Northam area living with his sister and mother.
      So in his later years he found himself teaching a subject he doesn't have much time for in a type of school he hates (he would no doubt vigorously agree with the Peter Hitchens view that a comprehensive school is a secondary modern by another name) and deeply frustrated with the difficulties of getting the pupils to take it on board. "Old school" in a literal sense.

      Bronson himself most likely had a very regimented, very strict and very orderly upbringing and his own parents most likely always reminded him of the "rebellious delinquents" that were popular at his school, while he was most likely a loner. So then as an adult headteacher he sees somebody like Danny and it reminds him of the very same rebels he knew at his own school.
