  • Ship with 19,000 Cattle Causes Stink in South Africa's Cape Town | Vantage with Palki Sharma
A ship carrying 19,000 cattle from Brazil to Iraq caused a stink in the South African city of Cape Town. The smell from the ship blanketed Cape Town. The cattle were stewing in more than two weeks worth of faeces and ammonia. The ordeal sheds a light on the global Livestock transport industry. Is there no way to transport animals without subjecting them to cruelty? Palki Sharma reports.

The issue is that this type of commerce exist since long time now, it is nothing new here. However in today in a tight market conditions countries use all their tools to retaliate against Powerful Business Corporation by creating the necessary conditions for all this to happen. It is not normal for a ship loaded with animals to have to wait 6 weeks in port before the animals are released back into the wild. The problem is not the transport but the conditions under which the ports accept or reject the goods. We continue to look at the problem from the wrong side. Repeat.

Baboons steal young animals and eat them alive like a hamburger, staring with the back muscles. They've even learned to raise domesticated dogs (which they steal as puppies) as weapons.
Orcas will sometimes play tennis with living seals purely for amusement and not eat it, and other creative things for amusement.
Elephants will crush smaller animals, like tortoises, purely for amusement.
Chimpanzees will often go to war...sometimes just for some meat. With gorilla populations recovering, we're seeing it's part of their nature to wage war as well.

    • @KatrinaLove62

The ship from Australia was the Bahijah, headed to Israel when turned back, not the Al Kuwait.
The Al Kuwait was headed from Rio Grande, Brazil to Umm Qasr, Iraq. Reports are that it is loading feed, but
A/ this is the world's largest purpose-built "livestock" carrier - it can carry enough feed for voyages in excess of 40 days and had only been at sea for 8 days
B/ livestock shipping operates out of East London, not Cape Town.
