  • This is an original audio recording of Audie Murphy speaking at the Alabama War Memorial dedication in Montgomery, Alabama, recorded on July 20, 1968.
    #ad
    Audie Murphy's memoirs of WW2

The recording is not in its entirety but is 90% complete, except for the opening greetings and the closing of his poem "Dusty Old Helmet."
Were it not for Murphy mentioning the war in Southeast Asia, one might believe that he were speaking of our youth and the soldiers of this generation. He was clairvoyant!

Dave, this is another great historical moment that has been saved from being lost and forgotten. While the text of the original speech has been preserved, the actual voice of Audie delivering it was lost until you found it and posted it for the public. Thank you. A great achievement.

Profound speech. How sad and disappointed Audie would be of today's lack of patriotism of people who do not value the greatness of America.

Dave, thank you for posting this. The conviction Audie's voice brings to his own words makes this a treasure. It's quite an accomplishment finding a recording that for years all of the experts said didn't exist. Thanks for sharing.

The chance to serve one’s country is a high privilege, not a worrisome sacrifice.
I feel quite certain that not one of the galant men honoured here regretted or regret the years he spent in the uniform of these United States.
But somehow, perhaps without intending it, perhaps because we felt guilty about waging war, and have mistakenly looked at the abstraction ‘ peace' as a panacea for all our ills, we have more and more tended to view military service as an unworthy occupation.
But when has man ever known peace. A great American soldier and statesman once said, ‘If man ever does find a solution to world peace, it will be the most revolutionary reversal of his record he has ever known.’ By all means, let us keep searching for peace. But until it is as least a remote possibility, let’s keep our powder dry and not downgrade the noble profession that safeguards our freedoms.
Let me speak from my own personal experience. I was a solider for a few years, early in my life. And although I’ve been fortunate enough to win success of some sort in other fields, I look back on the days I spent in uniform as the most rewarding of my entire career.
There’s no greater satisfaction, no greater opportunity a man can have than the chance to stake the ultimate, his life, fighting for freedom and country.
All men are born to die. And if one man must go a few turns of the Earth sooner than the next, what has he really lost? In life, it seems to me, quality is what counts, not quantity. Not how long, but how well one lives that matters most.
Who among us for example would hang on for a few brief moments longer to leave a worse world behind, or refuse to and depart a bit earlier to leave a better world for his children, and to posterity.
I’d like to turn now to a subject receiving a great deal of attention lately. The younger generation. I don’t think we had such a thing when I was growing up, but we have them now. And a much-maligned group they are too. And there is nothing wrong for the great mass of young people, today in this county.
I feel quite certain that the nine hundred thousand patriotic youngsters who contributed to the construction of this memorial will never forget why it was erected, and will themselves defend, if it becomes necessary, the high standards it symbolises.
More than half the population of this nation was born since the beginning of World War Two. That ancient conflict which still seems rather close to some of us, is as remote to the young people of today as The War of the Roses is to their elders.
Half the population of this nation does not remember what it felt like, through those trying years when freedom was at stake during every major battle. Yet our proud flag still flies and our noble republic still stands. And this generation is now guarding the ramparts.
Our country has never in its history been involved in a war as controversial and as frustrating as the bitter struggle we’re now engaged in in Southeast Asia. (The Vietnam War) No war has ever been fought under more trying circumstances. Yet our young men in the field fight on with courage and a high morale never surpassed in the history of this republic.
I know that many young people are disturbed and uneasy. I know many of them are asking some hard penetrating questions. We should welcome these questions when they are honest and sincere. And we must provide good answers to the difficult questions they pose.
We have never been a complacent people, willing to rest on our laurels. Americans have always welcomed constructive change, challenge and response. That’s what this great nation is all about. If we respond properly to the challenge these fine young people confront us with, if we hand them a better world than we received, I know they will not let us, or themselves, down.
I don’t have the slightest doubt that they’ll build upon what they’re given. And that the future of this great country is safe in their strong, resolute, young hands.

I'm sure his speech was inspiring but unfortunately for me, the audio was terrible. It sounded too `muffled'. I recently looked him up again on Wikipedia. I doubt very much there's not many men out there that could ever show the GUT'S Audie had. It wasn't fair the way he died but then life never is fair......is it? R.I.P. brother!!
