The reason is because of insecurities. Women don't want to look older than their man. When a man has a beard, they look older than their wife/girlfriend, but when they don't, they look younger.

It doesn't work correctly. If you have a bigger beard it fills in the beard with face, making your face a lot bigger and unproportioned. Weird. If you have a very short beard it works better.
