To be fair, Carfax only works on the scenario that the owner actually made an insurance claim/repair. It won’t ever show up, if they made the repair themself. Sketchy stuff. Love you Faye.

That's where the inspection comes in. look for things like misaligned or uneven/asymmetrical panel gaps, paint differences, undercarriage damage, missing or replaced fasteners/panels, etc

I bought a Corolla that had a 1-owner CarFax, but it was a Ford Dealer who had previously sold it as used 3-years prior. Me seeing that and correcting the dealer during negotiations saved me a few bucks on the price.

Honestly buying used is the biggest gamble right now . Everyone is a liar and a thieve. From dealers to private sales to even family members trying to offload their junker to you. I tried for 6 months to buy a good used car but was always a host of issues from leans to previous accident history to just overall zero maintenance history . Decided on a new Camry and that was that . Didn’t want payments but oh well here I am

@@PocketsandOutlawThat what happens when a Japanese Automaker becomes an Americanized Automaker "Toyota North America", biggest F*king mistake Mr. Toyota ever made in his life..... When Toyota was strictly a "Japanese" Automaker there was: Quality, Quality Control,Morals, Ethics, Pride, etc etc. Japanese vehicles made in Japan, never had all the b.s. problems you see today. This is what happens when people are coerced and manipulated by MONEY. Honda, Nissan, Toyota, have all lost everything I stated above. They are not the same company anymore and most likely never will be again thanks to the American Government, politicians and corporations that make things like this happen. There's absolutely no reason a Japanese Automaker needs to adjust to American b.s.... Thank goodness I got the last year Tacoma that came out of Japan. Would not buy the Americanized Toyota's today, the quality is gone and not to mention that Americanized Japanese vehicles are just as much as the American crap vehicles.

I'm originally from Canada. My family had several gas/service stations and used car lots. We sold great cars that were safe and affordable. In Canada (at least at the time) all cars required a Safety Inspection. Our cars, of course, followed the strict rules of said safety inspection. One time we had a Mercedes for sale. It was a great car with a great price. We allowed a potential purchaser to take it to the Mercedes dealership. Now keep in mind that this car was at least 15 years old at the time. The Mercedes dealer listed all sorts of crap that was "wrong" with the car. There were things like emblems that were broken, and fluids that were not 100% topped up. It was sad. I will admit that this is my only experience with a dealer review of a vehicle, but it was horrible. The potential customer didn't buy the car. I recommend doing your due diligence, but don't take it to a dealer. They wanted to sell a car, not truly assess our car.

Love the comments around 10:25 where Faye mentioned that Toyota power steering racks are always seeping. And you can hold off on sealng a leaking front cover.
For my 2011 Lexus ES 350, my indie shop continually mentions those issues, and I always turn down those services.
I think this would be a great topic for a dedicated video. For Toyotas, which repairs are okay to put off, and which ones require immediate attention?

Great information! I would add to be careful choosing a repair shop in close proximity to dealer. I bought a used heavy duty pickup and the closest repair shop was in the pocket of the dealer that sold me the truck. There was a new inspection sticker on windshield however the rotors had large rust holes in them and no back breaks! The nearby repair shop did the state inspection for the dealer!

Some car/vehicles are similar to houses..... you can have an old house with a new roof, new hvac system, new plumbing ....etc. OR you can have a newer house (15 years old) that will need a new roof in 5 years, the hvac isn't efficient....basically, will need a lot of maintenance sooner.
The only thing I would add to this is:
Check KBB, and other websites for "common problems" for the vehicle you are checking out.
Examples: PT Cruiser = major red flags. CVT transmission = 30k maint. intervals.
*EVEN for my 2003 Totota Avalon with the 1mz-fe engine...they can be prone to SLUDGE , IF the oil wasn't changed at 3-5k miles ... mine is clean and has oil changes records to prove it.

Nice to see you again! Budgetary constraints demand that my cars cost next to nothing and we need fitness certificates here before a car can be licensed. Sticking to Toyotas and Hondas and being able to fix things means owning a car is a practical proposition. Rockauto is helpful here as well as a splendid local junkyard owned by a saint. When the dealer's parts prices are out of the question, it's often a challenge to figure out which brands to choose. It's kinda fun though. 😊

Great advice . Two months ago we bought a 2018 Lexus RX350 ,49k miles. We researched and found the '18 to have the fewest problems in its generation. Wanted all wheel drive and Japan made. Our mechanic scanned it... no codes. He checked the paint with a handheld light. No damage. Suspension, rust check, filters etc. No charge! We still bought an extended warranty until 150k miles from Carmax. Never thought Id buy from them. They even gave us over twice what I would have accepted for our old car.

I went to a lot of trouble to find a specific car. I wanted an all-wheel drive little Toyota in a certain model year range, and that translates into a Toyota matrix (or a Pontiac vibe). But I kept looking, I kept traveling around, and you would not believe the number of people who believe that their Toyota matrix is all-wheel drive when it isn't.
So finally I found one, I drove to a dealer 2 hours away, and I took it to an inspection, and I thought the guy did a pretty crappy job. I mean he put it up on a lift and checked the bearings, but I just didn't feel like he did a whole lot of work.
So I think this is an important point too: if you're not satisfied with the inspection, by all means take it to somebody else, just like if you're not satisfied with the car. I think I gave the guy 40 bucks and he just didn't do everything I thought he should be doing.

First of all, thank you, Faye, for all of your videos! They are excellent!
Pretty much ever since I bought a used 2003 Sienna in 2008 from a friend, I've been a Toyota guy. Mostly, because I do a lot of maintenance myself and they are a joy to work on. The Sienna lasted 21 years and had nearly 190k miles. The only reason I got rid of it was that it would be too much $$ to get it to pass Illinois emissions, so time for a new vehicle.
Toyotas are very well built and have the best Quality (they wrote the book on Quality / Voice of the Customer / Lean Manufacturing / etc.).
I'm an aircraft mechanic, and while I usually know what I am doing, I'm still (always) learning when it comes to automotive (never stop learning in everything). Toyotas are great vehicles to maintain.
I used to change oil myself when I was younger because I didn't have two nickels to rub together. Now I do it because the auto parts stores started accepting used oil and fluids again (they stopped doing that during the Clinton years - by me, anyway). I also do it because I've been screwed over by the dealerships and places like Jiffy Lube. The former using recycled oil - not recommended for Toyota which recommends OEM Oil, and the latter for not changing the oil filters which is more important than fresh oil. I change the oil at 5K miles - whenever the maintenance light comes on and rotate the tires at 10K miles.
In 2017, I bought a used 2015 Camry from the local dealership with 21k miles on it. It now has 105k miles and looks and runs great! I bought the Toyota extended warranty that the dealer offered for $1,800.00 (10 years / 100k miles). Terrible decision, as I only offset that warranty by $650.00 when some tire sensors went bad. Again - Quality products, no extended warranty needed.
In 2023, I bought a used 2021 Highlander to replace the Sienna from Carmax. I had to go with Carmax because there really weren't a lot of used inventory to be had in the Chicagoland area post COVID (paid $200.00 to transfer the Highlander from Springfield, MO). I did a lot of research leading up to the purchase. I took about 3-4 months doing as much research as I could. I'm not a fan of new cars. They are front-end expensive and I like buying 2-3 year old cars, as they usually have all kinks (if any) worked out under warranty by the time I get a hold of it, and they are depreciated a significant amount by then and much less expensive. I'm also not a fan of first year runs (the Highlander underwent a major design change in 2020, so I avoided the design change years (2015, 2017, 2020) in my research.
I like Carmax and they have a niche. But during COVID, they kinda went out of control and got greedy. But the buying public is to blame - not Carmax. That being said, when I did the pre-inspection, I found things like the air filter, cabin air filter, and just general thing not up to snuff. They said they do a 200+ point inspection, but they clearly did not do it on this vehicle. The tires were also original with 45K miles on it. But the price was good enough.
I don't want to be too hard on Carmax because I've bought a few cars from them, but you need to know their limitations as a 'dealer'. I could have raised a stink about everything I found, but in reality, I don't trust them to use OEM parts, so I'd rather just do that myself. I was going to change the oil myself whether it needed it or not and use OEM oil and OEM filter. And I never buy the extended warranty from them.
I also drove it over to my local trusted mechanic during the 7 day trial period that Carmax gives you, and we both went over the Highlander and determined that it was a good deal in very good shape, considering the limited choices and higher than normal pricing in 2023.
I appreciate your channel! This video has great advice on it! Purchasing a car is a very emotional thing. Keeping a cool head and be willing to walk away from a 'deal', like your sister did, is key to buying a vehicle. I'm glad I buy Toyotas and don't need to buy replacement cars like I used to. I really don't enjoy the process.
    I watch your channel, obviously.
I like TheCarCareNut on UA-cam, who is also a Toyota guy and local to me. He does great reviews and covers a lot of caveats with maintenance and new cars.
    I also like FixItAngel
I buy my OEM Oil from www.okpetroleum.com/

Faye, Faye, Faye,... Never ever assume!! 😂
Just bought a 2012 Mazda cx9 for $3900. 118k miles. Super good deal.
New it needed repairs, but we needed a SUV asap, and this was literally a used car dealer 1/2 mile down the road from us.
Bought it, took it to our mechanic, $2900 later in repair
That wasn't the end of it, needed to put rear control arms in. Another $1300!!!
But the biggest issues with buying a used vehicle, is trust. Dealer or not.
Unless you really know what your vehicle, bring Faye with you!!! 😀😀😀

For 😂 lols, I have a relative who is a dealership dream. This person bought a car at their asking price, zero inspection, and bought the dealer's extended warranty. Dealership was happy. 😅 This was after nearly getting screwed over by another dealer on a car that was eaten by rust. That particular dealer outright lied about the car condition. I saw it on a lift. Sales guy refused to let me look any closer. Sales guy stated their mechanics checked it out prepping car for sale. That car was later, within a few days of sale, independently inspected, so the car was returned. Shady dealer. I just can't figure why this buyer didn't do any inspection on the car that was bought at another dealer. Well there's a random story.

But after selling our very first 'rv' a CampInn Teardrop Trailer 18 footer.. what a beauty she was.. but we needed a larger trailer because of the 5 cats we had rescued while traveling the USA +.. while working a season at YellowstoneN.P. we rescued a dog somebody just dropped in the park and left him. so now we were a cat clouder plus small black dog.
(by the why if you every get the chance to give a new "USA" emerging company a leg up, please do IT!!!) (we were soo happy fronting the 50% deposit and get VIP treatment!) ..factory vid updates on how your build is going is quite a treat.

I got burned once when buying a used car that was is great shape and had brand new tires on it. The car wound up having frame damage, not by rust, that wasn't easy to spot and it would burn through tires every 3,000 miles. So now i'm skeptical whenever buying a used car with brand new tires.

Right up front I would have a paint gauge. I would measure the thickness of the paint. Different thicknesses; forget it. I would have an auto mechanic and auto body person check it out before I laid any money down. I bought a used car and they gave me a 1 year bumper to bumper warranty back in 2019. I bought a new car back in 2003 brand new! Brought it home and noticed scratches on the hood the car was metal flake red; a mustang. Someone had scratched the hoods at a dealership days before. The dealership was going to repaint the hood but deep buffed the scratches out. Again the car was brand new. So don’t assume because it’s brand new not to check it carefully!

I bought my 07 Toyota Corolla with 207,486 miles and the dealership has a policy They inspect the car and if it doesn't meet their standards they won't sell it on their lot, they told me everything they found and it's been a great little car plus a Carfax, Highly recommend Jordan Ford Toyota in South Bend Indiana.

Been thinking about getting a third gen 4Runner. I let go of my 5th gen, the gas cost was becoming the same as the car payment lol but I loved the damn thing.
4th gen’s are still way overpriced. It’s gonna be a bit hard to find a good example because there are some things I am gonna worry about. Getting one just to hit trails, it will not be a daily. I got a Mazda wagon as a daily. My wife loves it, I hate it.

very very interesting and intelligent video! Thank u for it! Shows that intuition is critical. Btw, i've seen a ton of tatoos in my life including high quality, and i've never seen quality and placement and spacing as good as yours. whoa... though it's also your overall appearance and personality & presentation factors including voice, etc. which is extremely unusually high calibre! You have star quality actually and are also gorgeous (those are ironically two separate thing technically i guess)

I honestly just got lucky I feel on my last and current used car purchase from a smaller used car lot, looked under it 0 rust for a 2005 ford explorer that ran perfectly fine other than having a dead battery that needed replaced but it had 240k miles on it but was only 2.5k and still have it today still runs fine other than shifting a little slow which it always has and has 308k on it now. Just saving money atm for a better quality of used car since it runs fine I am going to keep driving it and saving until a repair is needed that is to expensive and does not make since for the vehicle age.

Tip, ask to drive car for a long while like 30 miles in different types of roads, THEN plug in OBD Scanner. If dealer doesnt allow this, they ARE probably hiding something. Then get the independent Inspection.

I wouldn't buy a used car from dealers at all. Find a private seller, (1) who is the original owner of the car for sale; (2) who has kept all the service records (oil has been changed at least once a year). The car for sale has to be known for its reliability. Do a VIN search to confirm clean title and no major accident. That's a good car to buy 9.9 out of 10.

This is very timely for me as I’m looking to buy a 4th Gen 4Runner in the next few months (looking at 2008 and 2009 models due to side curtain air bags becoming standard in 2008). I’ve done the homework, now to find the vehicle and an inspection place - preferably a Toyota dealership. Question, I was going to do my test drive/inspection prior to getting the pre-purchase inspection done. I figure if I don’t get a good vibe, why spend the $$$ on another inspection that isn’t going to change the vibe. Your thoughts? Great video Faye!

Faye, don’t put any faith in the Car Fax. Last used car I bought, the dealer provided a Car Fax showing a clean, no-damage car. Turns out, the car had been rear-ended; I found out by getting the Car Fax from a different source. I lucked out though, never had any problem with the car that was damage related.
