My all-time favorite instrumental is Cloudburst Flight by Tangerine Dream. It's five years after Phaedra, and the band had started to incorporate more instruments into the sound, so you get real nice acoustic and electric guitars, and drums too, in addition to all the synths. It's a mesmerizing 8 minutes, a true masterpiece, I hope you check it out!

    😃
    Yay!
I’m glad you liked it. “Ambient electronica” can really be a niche soundscape to get into.
Definitely delve into other Tangerine Dream, but from here I would recommend giving Jean Michel Jarre’s Oxygéne a listen. Still electronica, but slightly more accessible. It’s similar to Mike Oldfield, only electronic.

I was just thinking, a couple of days ago, that I never really come across reactions to TD. They were a big part of my teens and into adulthood and I saw them several times in concert. Their earlier albums ‘the Virgin years’ were my favourite with the original band line up, they became more accessible (as someone has commented) as time went by. I used to listen to this album with the lights off and headphones on, looking back it was like meditation and it cleared my mind of negatives (for a while). Thanks for reacting to this band, another great on of thier’s is ‘Force Majeure’ which has guitars and drums and probably more accessible to a wider audience. Cheers from the UK.

Johannes schmoelling is still active, doing Electronic music in the same vein as the great works he did in TD in the early-mid 1980's. He has also collaborated with Jerome Froese, Edgar's son, in the group Loom. They did a lot of 1980's TD.
Peter Baumann has done two solo albums in recent years, which reminds of the classic 70's TD, some of it in collab with Paul Haslinger. Chris Franke does'nt seem that much active anymore though.

@@mvjonsson - that reminds me, I’ve got a Peter Baumann album that is probably late seventies or early eighties (actually I’ve just googled it, it’s called ‘Romance 76’), haven’t heard it for years so I’ll have to dig it out.

I heard this back in 1974; a friend played it form me and I was blown away by it, and bought it straight away.
This music has influenced so much of my drawings and paintings of the time; I had it playing on headphones as I drew.
To this day I love it. 49 years later!
This started me on my Ambient journey, passing by way of Klaus Schulze, Robert Rich and my favourite, Steve Roach.
Well done for listening to it. It's quite a challenge for many people.
I also really like "Rubicon" and "Ricochet", both masterpieces, which came out after "Phaedra".
I stopped listening to them after their "Stratosfear" album; they became too commercial for my taste.
Klaus Schulze's album "Mirage" is another great weird one to check out; especially "Velvet Voyage". And, his later album "Beyond Recall", is truly amazing, especially "Gringo Nero".
