Not gonna lie this really opened up my eyes. I thought about how when I was at my happiest I was working a job as a clerk and had found ways to have fun with it. I would juggle packs of cigarettes customers asked for and I would have such deep conversations with customers that sometimes they would just come chill and talk with me after I got off work. I've been depressed at every place I have worked since and thought it was the fault of the job. But no, I found a way to have fun with a monotonous job and because I was having fun it didn't even feel like I was working.
I also thought about the flow state that you get in truly engaging games like the soul series. Where all external distractions fall away and you become fully immersed in the experience. It is the one game I have taught myself to speedrun just because the act of bending the game to my whim felt gratifying. I'm saving this video because this has really changed how I think.

“... by paying attention to the world rather than self-absorbed soul-searching.”
This speaks to me. For the last two years, I have distanced myself from the people I love because I am in the worst state I could be in and I promised myself I would “fix” myself first before I face them. It’s been two years of my self-absorbed soul-searching and I have not gone very far from where I was then. Had I used those years to reach out to my family and friends for help, support, and love, had I used those years to pay attention to the needs of others, to look for happiness in people around me, I would have been very far off rock-bottom.

Now I can put a name on the feeling driving my car gives me. Always trying to anticipate people's reaction better, always trying to parallel park in the tricky spots, always making a point at checking mirrors and blindspots even when I'm sure nobody's there, always looking to change gears according to the engine's efficiency based on load and rpm, always trying to use my momentum to save my brakes and fuel, always trying to hit that perfect rev matching when dropping a gear.
I'm not always the perfect driver I try to be. But once in a while everything about my driving is on point without me even thinking about it, and dammit does it feel good...

one way to read Tao Te Ching is to start at chapter 38 and read til the end (ch. 81?) and then go back to ch. 1 and finish at ch. 37. it is the original structure of the book but for some reason the te and tao were swapped in history. but i find it easier that way. Mencius's idea sounds a lot like TD(lambda), (mind is MC, heart is TD, back-propagated three times a day according to Confucius 1.0...) which is interesting to see similar ideas resonate throughout history.

This is a rather curious reading of the Asian philosophers. I've read all the ones you've mentioned, but frankly I certainly did not see any of what you said in them. Now, I don't read ancient Chinese, but something tells me that "authentic self" and "neurotic self", and such notions probably didn't really exist back when they were writing their works.

9:57 that is basically a NON-reading of Nietzsche and completely flawed. Happiness isnt a goal for Nietzsche, nor is dominating anyone. Becoming a super-man involves being an example and inspiration for yourself and thereby your social environment. It is not about dominating the world, it is about maximizing and "exceding" your own potential through the embrace of life, fate and free will and a consistent moral code/behaviour.

From what I have read in Mencius original text, it’s doesn’t seem like anything you describe, I think the author might have elaborated a bit.

Confucianism: Know you place in society. Know and understand what authority you actually hold and listen to authority, because more often than not, that authority is earned.
Also confucious says man that puts genital in peanut butter is f*cking nuts.
