This is a pen trick where you spin the pen around your thumb and catch it. It's one of the more basic pen spins out there, but it still looks really cool!

I'm pretty sure it just takes a ton of practice. After a while I managed to do it decently. Just takes a decent amount of patience.

so I've been doing this for about an hour and a half and I'm just now starting to get the hang of it, so take your time. I've come up with some helpful hints:
Think of it like snapping your fingers but with a pen in the way
Start out slow. As long as you have your thumb still, it should work.
Don't spin it on the tip of your thumb, you'll loose control.
Before you begin, think of where you want to push the pen. You can't just push it, you have to think about it.
Keep your eye on your thumb instead of your pen. Make sure your thumb is not moving at all.

Some tips
Smoothly and softly but not too softly roll your middle finger slightly towards you in a downward motion
I also recommend to relax and take a breath before spinning. If you're tense and shaky it makes it difficult.
For this trick you only need to move your index finger and middle finger. Practise keeping the rest of your fingers still.

Yes its really uncomfortable when doing unfamiliar things and all you want to do after doing something so uncomfortable for a while is to hit or punch something

Relax your thumb and do not move it, and like what he said don't put too much pressure on the pen when you flip it. Once it flips, push your index finger back, and you'll catch it. It took me awhile, and you need very good cognitive reflexes to master this :)

A good tip for anyone who's pen spins too far: use less pressure. It looks like he's flicking it, but he's merely giving a wee little push.

what no pen spinner will ever tell you is that we have to use relatively heavier pens or long ass pens

I just learned it. Quick tip: For any of you who are struggling to spin a pen, try spinning a fork to start off, it's easier to do it with heavier objects. When you feel comfortable enough spinning a fork, start spinning with a pen. It'll be easier that way.
By the way, to spin the fork, spin it on your bed.

tried this during an exam. Long story short i got kicked out and i couldnt finish because there was a pen stuck in my right neighbor's eye

this was a good tutorial. thank you :) . it was kinda hard to figure out how to do it. but just repeat and repeat when the pen falls. I repeated like 240 times (yeah I counted 'cuz I'm bored) and now I can handle this. not every single time, but sometimes succeed

The catching is the hardest thing ever I think it’s really about how much pressure you put on it when spinning it round your thumb as if you do it right it should just fall into place as it comes back round like he showed it’s so difficult

i learned this when was 14, took me a week to become pro. i even posted a video of this in slowmo on my channel.
This took me pretty much a year before I was doing it confidently in meetings.
Well, the thing is, I was actually taught to hold the thumb still and push with the middle finger only, but I find it much easier to do this like on the video. Good day to you, sir!

hopefully this helps another person but I found out that if you position your fingers relatively near the rear area (or the area that's nearest to your hand) then you'd get a better success rate. I also found out that if you position your middle finger a bit far from your thumb, then that'll also give a good launch.

If you're curious when you've mastered the trick, you should be able to spin it smoothly and catch it so. You should be able to start spinning at the middle and it ends in the middle, instead of starting at the top and at the end of the spin you're holding the bottom.

This was the first pen trick I learned, I had it down since last year when online schooling was happening
This is the first one I'm trying to learn it feels fun
I think this is harder than the trick where you spin the pen between the fourth and fifth finger, where I could even add an additional spin between the second and third finger.
This slow mo makes it really easy to understand;thought it spins twice around the thumb. Great video, it's really helpful :)

in case anyone is having a huge amount of trouble, a japanese person has come to the rescue
dont use too much pressure when pushing it, go really light and keep going more pressure until it can fully spin around
for catching you want to just practice getting that perfect spin and moving your index finger outward instead of freaking out
