Hylda Baker in She Knows Y'Know (1962)

This rarely seen vehicle for the great Lancashire comedienne Hylda Baker has recently been restored and remastered from one of the few surviving prints known to exist by Renown Pictures Ltd and released on DVD. It shows Hylda at the peak of her performance powers as the strong willed mother Hylda Worswick. The film costars Cyril Smith, Joan Sanderson, Joe Gibbons, Linda Castle and Patricia Shakesby.

When I was a kid in the early 60's, my Grandma used to butter the bread before slicing it! She would have been a similar age to Hilda Baker, so maybe it was common practice in Lancashire.

The best way to butter fresh bread without ripping it to shreds, but I top-slice it so it doesn't get squashed or cut into uneven doorsteps
