The Double Fisherman's Bend, The Knot That Could Save Your Life
Вставка

- The Best way to connect two ropes together. The Double Fisherman's Bend. This works on both Equal and Different sized ropes. This tutorial is for beginners and advanced levels together- all in a quick and simple format, who are looking to tie two ropes together / join two ropes.
The double fisherman's bend is used on a prusik loop, and it's downside is binding up. For one that doesn't bind, check out the Zeppelin Bend or 69 Knot!
I've heard your requests and have been busy behind the scenes writing a book that you can take with you out into the field. I've also been working on a blog that goes in depth on all these things! Should be released soon!

Fun fact, we use this knot in hang gliding. I trust it with my life on every flight.
Thx for adding some credibility to this vid, much appreciated!!
Knots are so cool. How something so simple can be so powerful.
@@TheBearEssentialsLove your vids, keep it up!
That work for me lol
Thank you for sharing that fact, acually really helped me decide which knott to use for combining multiple ropes for my kids tire swing. I guess your comment sorta depends on how much you value life...lol, jk, I'm sure a lot, obviously living it up too :)
After tying a square knot on my bracelet and it just suddenly untying itself, it was time to learn a new knot!
This one is elegantly simple and incredible strong! Thanks for the simple and effective lesson on it!
Short, on point, well filmed - Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Always wanted to know knots better. Your channel has helped with that so much.
Very clear instructions. I wish every UA-cam tutorial was as well done as this.👍
Thank you!
Double fisherman's knot... Probably it is the knot I have been using the most... Thanks for the video!
I just learned this knot using paracord. I made a few bracelets and used this knot on the ends to create a slide closure type for the bracelet. They also explained how one side would have an 'X' and the other side would have an '=' equal sign. Easy to tie. I don't care using it for paracord bracelets tho. They are hard to tighten with one hand.
Sat down last night and made a single line out of a bunch of scraps I had just for practice, and discovered this knot also makes for a handy light-load tensioning knot too. Especially after it has held a load on it and is nice and tight. Strong enough to support a blanket roof on a PVC fort at least!
The algorithm got it right today. I have always had an interest in knots. I find this video far more helpful than the diagrams and written instructions I’ve read in books. Thank you.
Great knot and demo DJ. Thanks
Nate
Thank you for including the different use cases between this and the zeppelin bend!
Right on, ya for sure. I love em both. I’ll make a longer form on the zep soon I think
I know I’m gonna come back and watch this like 10 times! Gonna have to use this for tying anchor lines for floating wakeboarding obstacles at my wake park!
Hey DJ Knotty boy!
Thanks for throwin in the cool tips! ❤
Always Awesome! 👊🏻👍🏻Thank you DJ! 🙏🏻 God Bless
Appreciate you my friend
Wow, good to know!! Thank you!
Another great video! I've been meaning to re-learn sheet bends but that knot looks epic. You also answered my question about what to do if I want something I can untie. Thank you!
Ah fantastic! I’m glad, I’ll make a video that shows a bunch of different bends soon too!
Good stuff
Thank you
Handy knot and nice video. Thank you for sharing!
Any time!
Solid gold.
Practical, I'll try this knot next time going camping 😍🔥👌🍻💯
Right on!! Glad it helps.
You're almost 1m subs. Keep it up! Thank you for teaching me these knots, this is a game changer for camping especially those tool you make!
Thanks a bunch!! Super happy for the nice messages and support
Been needing this one for a while lol
Another good one.
Thx!
YAY!!!❤❤ ("first")
Your content is so valuable 🥰
Thx!!
Nice
The #1 Most Helpful channel. Thank you DJ.
Hahaha thank you so much!
I saw an older video of the Beckett and Sheet bend is one used more often for ropes with two different diameters. The fisherman’s is used more readily for ropes of equal diameter. If you wanted to go overboard one could tie two half hitches on each end as “safety knots.”
@@DJake78 yes, but less secure ofcourse. You won’t catch anyone looking for a reliable knot for climbing etc using no a sheet or Beckett. That’s the main difference
@@TheBearEssentials in- line figure 8 is a great climbing knot.
majestic
Tuna fisherman here. Love this knot and all your videos!
Where do you tuna fish!? That’s incredible!!! And thank you
@@TheBearEssentials Fished in a number of places around the world but home is The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) out of Galveston, TX. About 175 mi. out toward int'l waters. Fish for different sp. on the way out and on the way back. Takes about 2.5 days for full trip.
@@shashakeeleh5468 How big tuna do you catch? Would you ever take a person like myself out for a rip?
@@Wilder-Minds I stick to the smaller black fin tuna nowadays, as larger ones of a couple hundred pounds will ruin the back, shoulders and neck. This isn't a yacht, or boat with fight seat rig, it's rough and tumble party boat all the way. It's too expensive for me to fish much anymore but if you want to go, I can give you the info. and you will need to use your own tuna rig, which I can tell you about. Let me know.
You’re doing the lords work
I've always liked the figure eight bend with the ends terminated in double overhand knots. I mean I don't know if it reduces rope strength more than the double fisherman's bend.
I'm left handed, recorded video and flipped it, now can tie this knot with eyes closed, THANKS! Loops in, Tail out
Love your videos and You are Super Good Looking...
upload more video solo camping please
😊
Headed out soon for a winter one :)
Yes, zeppelin for temporary connecting (easy untie) and grapevine for permanent banding. That's both are my favorites.
@TheBearEssentials The ropes you use are works of art in themselves 😀 are those braided polypropylene ropes? Thanks DJ!
Yes they are! Good eye.
I’m launching 3ft versions of these with my knot tying book in a couple weeks - check it out if you want brother!
@@TheBearEssentials awesome, thanks. I’ll look out for it! 👊🏼
What can I say that it nourishs the brain
Where are these beautiful forests that you are camping in (in which country)
Canada ! Southern Ontario :)
How different is this knot from the double uni knot? They look almost identical
Does the cross and parallel pattern not aligning side by side cause it to be weaker?
Not by a huge amount, if you’re using it for everyday tasks then it won’t matter, if you’re depending on it, then you’ll want to make sure they’re snug!
I saw that sly smile at the end when talking about the 69 knot
chers
Anyone else doing this on their hoodie strings at 11:30 ?
I have a question
Does anyone know where I can get paracord in SA for a reasonable price
Specifically so I can have some quality rope to practice his knots
Hey! I’ll have a kit coming out soon !
@@TheBearEssentials sick thanx
What kind of rope do you use? Please share a link!
Hey! Depends which application you’re wanting it for. I’m releasing my own line in February, if you can wait until then. If not, lmk your applications and I’ll direct you to the best types for it :)
@@TheBearEssentials for knot tying practice, so not too thick or thin
@@michaelm3404 Kk ill have practice ropes coming out then too. Id recommend finding in the meantime a 8mm-10mm max nylon rope. On amazon I'm sure you could find a couple. If you wait a little ill have em available with my knot tying booklet too!
What type of rope is that? Can I get it at Lowe’s or Home Depot lol?
It’s 10mm nylon rope! I’ll be releasing some soon!
You can’t get this exact one there but similar kernmantle ropes
Isn't this guy the Winter solider?
That called a uni knot when you use it for fishing.
I thought the zepplin knot was the most secure?
Apparently the zeppelin knot is slightly less secure but oftentimes accepted since it's easier to untie after heavy loading. This is addressed in the video.
I learned the reaver knot a while back after seeing it win in a panel of stress tests (from HowNot2, IIRC). There are two points (also raised in this video), though, that the double fisherman's bend might still have going for it:
* It's got some shock-absorbtion capability. The stress test I saw gradually increased the load via a winch so I'm not sure how dynamic the reaver would be.
* It's easy to verify via the double-x, double-slash method shown. I'm not aware of common mis-configurations of the reaver but that doesn't mean they couldn't exist.
I'm not sure how difficult the reaver would be to untie after loading.
Did a little testing...
The reaver has a distinctive look that should be pretty easy to verify. It's definitely much easier to untie.
I think the reaver ended up better under static loads because it has the same gentle curve around two 'cores' but doesn't pinch as hard as the double fisherman's.
The double fisherman's is probably better under shock load, though, because that same pinching can channel some of the initial onset of kinetic energy into friction / heat so there ends up being less available to convert into force/tension.
Also, I forgot to mention earlier that the double fisherman's works well with slightly different diameter cordage. I'm not sure how the reaver handles that.
Wow you actually think that is a good idea
It's called a love knot.
This knot is also awesome for adjustable cord necklaces!💛🤍💜🖤
Outstanding video tutorial, DJ!
