“It’s gotta go, or I’m gone”
jfc mate, blink twice if you’re in danger 😂
A shocker for TEN. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, Paramount took over... and it did. Good video :)
And then 2020 happened…
I need more tedious stories about Australian Television history stat!
@@Lokkth I need more Patrons!
As a current broadcast coordinator this lore is both hilarious and fascinating. Love the 4:3 touch. Subbed!
Reminds me of watching TV in Canberra. The nation's capital getting ads for farm equipment and the National Party. Yes, I understand why, but it was jarring coming from Perth.
Huh, I remember those adds, and ones for sheep dip . I am from Sydney and was wondering what the hell was going on.
The Canberra TV market does take in places like Goulburn and Yass
No idea why this popped up in my feed, but it was a fun look at a bygone age. Also, finally an Australian UA-camr who isn't from bloody Sydney!
@@philipsalama8083 True I’m not from Sydney but still getting the Sydney programming
I do remember in 1987 when channels 7 and 10 in Adelaide swapped. Seeing 10 newsreaders on 7 the next day, and vice versa, was so huge to a 10yo like me.
Just found your channel after enjoying you on Tik-Tok the past several months.
oh how deep the rabbit hole goes
Looks like the channel is really starting to take off! Congrats David. Great to see.
Growing up in Sydney I recall having Melbourne ads on TV every now and again, and not just when IMT (90's version) was for some reason being broadcast in Sydney.
I remember Ch0 in Nunawading were showing too many ads per hour and government officials had Sir Reginald Ansett in for tea and bikkies.
'Sydney' is not his name it's Greg Wood who owned a huge Melnourne and Brisbane business. It's now handed down, and today there is a still a Melbourne store called Scott's Furniture Warehouse
Thanks for clarifying. Do you know why he called it Sydney's instead of Greg's?
Back in 2004 I went to Melbourne to get my current bed from Sydney's Lounges and Bedding. 20 years later that bed has survived my teens, 20's, and much of my 30's. I can't imagine old Sydney is still with us today. Haven't seen him on the telly in forever.
I knew that television began broadcasting in 1956, but I didn't realise that it was well into the sixties before channel 10 starting broadcasting. We lived in Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, so unless you erected the Eiffel Tower in your back yard (and plenty did) you were limited to NBN 3 from Newcastle, and the ABC. And not only did they both go off at night, but the ABC used to have periods during the day when they would stop broadcasting. You always knew when something was about to come on because they would broadcast a ticking clock. The viewing might not have been very exciting, but you could absolutely certain that it would start on time. To the second!
@@davidhynd4435 An upcoming episode features some ABC stuff from the early 80s. Lots of ticking clock and test pattern
I also lived in Cessnock and did in fact see some eiffel tower-like antennas
I always wondered why they were so big, so thanks for the explanation
I was from the south of Sydney but I traveled with my family through the Newcastle area frequently as a kid. I always wondered why there were so many monstrous TV antenna masts.
@@davidthegreen Just had a Sydney ad shown on Melbourne TV (9Gem) , their version of the Towards Zero campaign with NSW Government logo.
I think channel 10 ten started as channel 0. My friends Dad growing up was a cameraman and documentary maker and he always had stories about the channel 0 days!
I dimly remember Sydney getting cancer, becoming emaciated and asking people to help him out by buying a couch. Wtaf.
Within the last few months, I saw a run of Victorian PSA's about safety around trams. Problem is I live in Tasmania and we haven't had a tram system for like 70 years. For some reason every now and then a Victorian PSA will slip through. Almost always, the PSA's would be a problem unique to big cities or specifically Melbourne. It really mixes up the variety of ads when you get an ad about water tanks buying/installation/removal, then a PSA about Victorian Police increasing the safety of passengers on trains, and then an ad for building industrial sized sheds.
@@jeremykhan887 Yeah still happens from time to time
Are you watching Ten's Tassie channel? Because I believe they're run out of Melbourne
Wow, so fascinating! As an autistic person my favourite part of travel is getting to see another city/state's ads!
Same here. The first time i went to India i spent the first night just browsing all their strange TV channels. lol
@@TheRealToadfishRebecchi You should stay at The Star Sydney sometime. They have all sorts of Chinese etc. channels. Heaven!

@@TimmyTickle Probably. It was very entertaining!
I don’t know what what you’ve done, maybe the clothes or a filter? but you’ve aced the 90s feel with the irl portions of the video
The 4:3 aspect ratio is doing a lot of the heavy lifting
If I were a employee for one of Australia's commercial TV stations and looked back over the last couple of decades of work - I'd top myself.
That Futurama cut was brilliant
I remember when ABC would go to the rainbow and tone when they stopped at night. The only channel you could still get in some parts of Victoria. It was very different times even in the late 90's.
Ch 10 the red headed stepchild of the TV stations.
The fact that the presenter records himself in what appears to be that 90s type definition is truly a touch of genius.
Well done.
@@thehoov6672 It’s actually still 1080p high definition like modern TV but the aspect ratio is 4:3 like ye olde TV
Channel 10 seems to be constantly passing hands or being bankrupt for its entire history. I remember when Gina Rinehart bailed them out briefly, the ass kissing was next level.
Also, growing up in rural Australia, the ads were always weird. You'd have ads for businesses from all the major regional centres (e.g. Wagga Wagga, Orange, Bathurst), Western Sydney, Canberra, bizarrely the South Coast too,.
I worked at TVQ in the Presentation department over 20 years ago. Even as late as 2006 we would switch to Sydney’s ‘dirty feed’ at around 1-2am and go back to the ‘clean feed’ with local LMS commercial playback at around 7am. Nice video.
@@TheAuteurist23 Wow later than I expected
Ever get complaints from horny teenagers complaining that Aerobics Oz Style was interrupted by Sydney ads?
2:48 This guy had seen better times having been able to afford a 60 second commercial for Le Lounges in Adelaide which I have just published.
In 1991 Le Lounges changed to the 'Cunnos' guy, now we know why!
I must have binged at least 10 of these videos. Really fortunate to have found your channel! Seeing very nieche aspects of Australian culture and media covered is something I've wanted for a while.
@@itsScoots Plenty more where that came from!
Always wondered about this as my family used to record old movies and TV shows (like the Chris Elliot comedy 'Get A Life') on Channel 10 overnight during the early 1990s and noticed this constantly. Think even saw ads with unknown rugby league players fronting them as well.
It does seem incredibly cheap but overnight was treated as a wasteland by Oz TV as you say back then so probably makes sense.
The second add is great I betcha they did one take and couldn’t do any others because everyone was laughing just too hard. He doesn’t sound teary, those are ‘trying not to laugh’ sounds
I remember how amazing it was when tv started staying up all night.
Oh no, what have I stumbled on to now
Hang on... something magical is happening here. Subscribed!
Every single two seater I saw in that first ad I swear my grandmother owned.
LOL I actually used to edit the Sydney's Lounges commercials from 2002 for a few years. It was my first job after moving to Melbourne as a 20 year old :D
@@lukas.strautins Ever leave any mistakes in like this one?
@@davidthegreen Well there was a bunk called the "C-bunk" named after his family member nicknamed Uncle Cunt. I think me and the previous senior editor did a couple things on purpose, but I honestly can't remember what they were now.
@@davidthegreen Well there were a couple little in-jokes... there was a "C-Bunk" that was in reference to his family member nicknamed Uncle Cunt. I think the previous senior editor and I did put in a couple small things on purpose that were sly enough to go under the radar, but I honestly can't remember what they were now. Other times, we were making up names for the suites being sold. It was an "interesting" place to work, to say the least.
"Sydney" was actually one of the guy's middle names.
I remember a few RTA ads coming on TV in Melbourne. Seemed surreal compared to the “blood and guts” TAC commercials.
6:15 That oddly coloured rainfall image and the "To order this CD please call the SBS" text is so goddamn familiar to me from my childhood
I love the tedious explanations
You do a really great job with these videos!

Those cheap one were so crap in those day, may be just last 2-3 years, and I did had one in the 90. But now this day I have 4 couches in the big house for over 10 years.
Sydney’s was in Sydney road, I never knew Sydney’s was also in Sydney
The joys of shitty tv.
