I think the heart rate monitor is a great idea, but I don't think it's calibrated correctly. It seems to be taking the average over the course of the last minute rather than the current heart rate, which defeats the point because most spikes generated by movies only last a few seconds, and the increased number won't shoot up the minute average by any more than a few (whereas it's probably actually spiking to 130+ for those few seconds).
you may have a good point there, if anyone knows whether theres a setting change for this on Apple Watches please let us know!
I noticed when they used it for The Descent that it couldn't be working, cause even on jump scares her heart rate barely moved! After a jump scare 1 would think it would jump by at least 10 or 15, even for a brief couple of secs!
According to Apple Support Article: “Monitor your heart rate with Apple Watch” (Published Date: September 21, 2023)…
Apple Watch Series 4 and later and all models of Apple Watch Ultra also have built-in electrodes in the Digital Crown and the back of Apple Watch, which can measure the electrical signals across your heart when used with the Heart Rate app or the ECG app. When you place your finger on the Digital Crown, it creates a closed circuit between your heart and both arms, capturing the electrical impulses across your chest.
To use the electrical heart sensor to measure your heart rate, open the Heart Rate app and place your finger on the Digital Crown. You will get a faster reading with higher fidelity - getting a measurement every second instead of every 5 seconds.
@@CineBingeReact I wasn't expecting this movie but if you've seen this then I think you should definitely try watching 8 legged freaks. Would love to see your reaction to that one.
It's because Simone is AI! Haha, see what I did there? The movie Simone?
Fun Fact! The animatronic spiders used on this film were made by Mythbusters own Jamie Hyneman in his early special effects years within Hollywood
Apparently he also adopted the birdeater spider used as “The General” and its name was “Big Bob”.
R.I.P. to Grant Imohara. Gone way too damn soon.
RIP Julian Sands. Brilliant actor and soul.
Saw this film in cinemas on release. Everybody had their knees up on their seats.
RIP JS! He was born in my hometown, Otley, West Yorkshire, a rare talent 🙏
Def a Julian Sands fan, was so sad with his passing. And yes also saw this in theaters as a kid. My mom and brother went to the bathroom and I didn't need to. Then I got scared and ran out of the theater. I would've sworn spiders were chasing me up the aisle lol.
Yes, very sad...he was a fantastic actor...woefully underrated
Julian was one of the best "weird guys" in movies but he could fit just as easily into romances like Room with a View, or horror comedies like this film. No matter how low budget and schlocky a film you would see him in you always knew you were in for a fun performance from him. Great character actors are so very rare, he will be missed.
Came here to say the same thing. Thank you for mentioning Julian Sands. So sad how he passed.
The spiders were real. They sourced over 200 of them from New Zealand and to get them to move in the desired direction, they used hair dryers to blow warm hair on them.
Also, this is the movie that makes you even more afraid of spiders! RIP Julian Sands, 1958-2023.
They are called Avondale spiders, and they were picked because they were harmless. The general and the queen are played by Bird Tarantulas.
That's wild! So...did they just smash them for real?
I appreciate how hard they worked not to hurt the spiders on set. The scene were one gets crushed? If you look closely you can see a hole in the bottom of the shoe! That is why the actor is moving so slowly! He's giving the spider a chance to crawl into the safe zone!!!
Also, the spiders they used aren't web-spinning spiders, so every time they show one repel down and then climb into something, they had to use a little Mission Impossible-style harness made from fishing line.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was like 10 and it absolutely solidified my fear of spiders. And I grew up in the California desert, where there were tarantulas, black widows and all kinds of creepy-crawlies all around, so the movie didn't exactly help.
RIP Julian Sands! A much underrated actor, already classic in his own right
No, Jeff Daniels actually is terrified of spiders. So it made his reactions to them very believable.
@softscrub88 No I've seen interviews of him saying with his own mouth and face that he is terrified of spiders.
I’m amazed he agreed to be in this movie-he must’ve been quite agitated at times.
@BarryHart-xo1oy Yea in an interview he was saying they would just throw that giant spider on him numerous times to get a natural reaction and they did so many takes. And they told him the spider might bite him.
Not very afraid.
I'm afraid of spiders, and there is no way in HELL i would ever get close to spiders like that, for that many times.
@murrayroodbaard207 I think he really needed this movie at that point in his career. And I think it really helped put him on the map as a big time actor. And when you are talking about millions of dollars.... I might have had to force myself to do it. Even if I was peeing my pants the whole time.
Fun little story form my youth: ARACHNOPHOBIA was shot right in my home town area - the town of Cambria CA. As a teen I worked at the local big movie theater that everyone in the area would come to watch movies - and since everyone know about the local filming they all came to my theater when the film came out. I decorated the theater up with all kinds of webs and spiders etc. - and I had one very nice scary realistic looking spider rigged on a line that I could control from the snack counter that I could drop on people coming out of the theater. Everyone loved film - it really is great - and then the HUGE scares and screams I'd get form them by dropping the spider on to people was amazing. People would line up to watch as their friends and family were exiting to watch them scream. So much fun. If I wasn't already certain that I was to be working in the film biz as my chosen profession that experience solidified my future!
"Afraid of the ones with big butts?" LOL. Sir mix a lot is playing in my head
I swear, having the first person killed in arachnophobia being a photographer must have been a deliberate spider-man joke.
It’s from 1990 so I doubt it
Spiderman predates the 90s lol
@@jackward121yeah spiderman was a pop culture icon since the 60s bruv
Lmfao I never made that connection. Funny
@@jackward121 spider-man was made in 1962 and the first cartoon based on the comic came out in 1967.
I never get sick of the formula of Person A says there is a problem. Person(s) B doesn't believe them. Person A was correct and everything goes to hell. It is a creature feature/disaster movie staple and I love it every time.
You have to watch Eight Legged Freaks, in my opinion one of the best spider movies. It’s dumb, cheesy, early 2000s action/horror movie with just the right amount of comedy😅 plus freaking Dewey (David Arquette) is in it lol
Yes...
It's much funnier than it has any right to be. Also, Kari Wuhrer 😍
It has one of my favorite visual comedy bits of all time, but I can't say anything in case they haven't watched it yet
Just the perfect amount of cheese. Love 8 legged freaks
it's a spider, man
“You know spiders are bad business when you can hear them.”
-Bilbo Raggleton
I love the heartbeat monitor idea ! Please keep it up .
Update: The fact that Simone’s heartbeat goes way DOWN when the guy is dead in the coffin has me worried …….
Simone scares me
It went up when food came on screen. 😅
It's not a heart rate monitor, it's an apple watch, it's not giving accurate readings
@@jesusramirezromo2037 It's the thought that counts
The "General" spider is a Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula. The soldier spiders are a harmless species from New Zealand. And they used a heat gun to make them move the way they wanted.
Goliath bird eaters are harmless also but they can bite if they feel threatened I’ve had one
2:56 Any time you have the Warlock starting things out, you know it isn't going to be good.
"Hallowed are the Ori."
RIP
Another fun spider movie is Eight Legged Freaks - it actually is ridiculous on purpose AND it features a young Scarlett Johansson!
I second this recommendation.
@@raydurz Aye!
Arachnophobia and Eight Legged Freaks are the best spider horror comedies out there!
If you're looking for another EXCELLENT Creature Feature you HAVE to watch Lake Placid. Betty White dropping the F-bomb is worth the watch alone...
Yeah, it's not a bad movie that one.
(Not so) fun fact: not all spiders are solitary. I don't know the name of the species, but I worked for years in Papua New Guinea where there are webs that span hundreds of meters, engulfing multiple trees, fences, shipping containers, ect, and have literally thousands of spiders living in them. I'm told they also live in Indonesia, but I cannot confirm this as I never crossed the border.
I'm not big on bugs in general, but you kinda have to get over that living there as they are EVERYWHERE! They have beetles the size of a child's fist and a moth called a Goliath Moth so damn large you can actually hear its wings "wooshing" as it flies by you.
That’s fascinating and scary-l can only imagine what nighttime in that country is like.
Not gonna lie the giant moths sound pretty dope. But I already like moths, so…
Spiders aren't bug they're Arachnids.
3:30 The production company Amblin Entertainment was founded by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, & Frank Marshall. You'll often see all three names credited as executive producers in many 80s & 90s films. This happens to be Marshall's directorial debut.
As others already said, Eight Legged Freaks is probably one of funniest Spider-themed movies.
That's a movie so horrible, you could use the clip of Calculon reacting ot Bender's acting as a proper review of the movie.
The scientist is Julian Sands. He was The Warlock and also Boxed Helena.
He was sadly found dead in early 2023, five months after disappearing while hiking. He was 65.
I guess George has never heard of the Tenderloin district in San Francisco. Bad sushi is the last thing anyone should worry about in SF.
Makes me want to watch Eight legged freaks. That film is so fun haha! Definitely recommend that one
I got to see a premier showing of this movie back in Michigan when it came out for free. A local radio station was giving out free tickets. During the movie whenever there were closeups of the spiders the radio staff would throw big rubber spiders at the crowd from below the 1st row. I had one land right in my lap. LOL.
Interesting that Simone's heart rate was higher during the intro than it was (so far) during the movie. 😆
Vale Julian Sands, who died through a hiking misadventure some months back.
Test her resilience to the ever popular comedic horror movie : Eight Legged Freaks
The reference to Kipperlily Copperkettle was fantastic! First time I've instantly gotten one of Simone's random openers :)
I was looking for this I’m glad I’m not alone! 😂
Hoot growl!
The spiders are Avondale spiders, native to Australia. They are from the Huntsman clade of spiders.
This has always ticked me off, because those are obviously Orb Weaver webs, which I guess were done for easier recognition, but Huntsman webs look awesome. They basically construct a small house out of webs, with rooms and everything. The entrance looks like a little hobbit hole without a door.
Avondale is in New Zealand
That’s fascinating.
@@chrisnielsen9885 But they aren't native to New Zealand. They are an invasive species that got their common name after the invasion.
@@chrisnielsen9885yes but was believed that these are a type of huntsman spider that was inadvertantly brought over from Australia in the early 1900's
Golden Orb spider webs are strong enough to catch small birds.
I can't believe I remember this but HBO used to have a show called "Movie Magic" where they go behind the scenes for hundreds of films from the late 80's to mid 90's and they covered this film.
It couldn't have been on HBO. I saw every episode when they were new and I had no access to HBO then.
Is that on Max?
@@seanmalloy0528 I can’t find it in the Max app.
@@toddjones1480
It was on Discovery Channel ... which now owns HBO, and renamed it MAX, so it might actually be there!
@toddjones1480 it was originally aired on Discovery but rebroadcast on several of HBO's channels. This was several years after TimeWarner bought HBO.
One of my favorite John Goodman roles easily. "Rock and roll"
George´s confused face every time when Simone does her opening riddle never gets old 😁
Yes, US physicians need to attract patients. They are only paid by the visit (unless they work for a big network and get a salary or have a "concierge" practice where patients pay to have access rather than per visit). It takes a population of about 2500 people to generate enough patient visits to support one primary care physician. It's a bad set up because it makes medicine a commercial product rather than a service you just go and get.
Thank you for that vital information.
Today I found out that Simone's heart is apparently broken...
Poor Simone :(
So I work at a movie theatre and once a month we get together and watch a movie on the big screen. The catch is that the movie is randomly selected out of all prior recommendations and we don’t know which movie has been chosen before it starts. For October of last year it was Arachnophobia, and as someone with actual arachnophobia you can imagine my „joy“ when the title screen appeared. All things considered the movie wasn’t that bad actually, or at least what I could see of it through my hands lol
You kept your eyes open at least! That's progress.
@@LucianDevine yeah but I also had some pretty vivid nightmares lol first horror movie I've seen to achieve this actually
@@DavidFlowers777 Heh, yeah, for somebody with a arachnophobia, I can 100% see that, and it's pretty understandable. Just getting through the movie is an accomplishment, hands or no hands. The phobia is bad enough when it's a single, small, and harmless spider, let alone everything this movie throws at you.
I have intense arachnophobia myself.. I remember watching this movie when it first came out, i was like 9 or 10. I do not remember why i watched it, or how I made it through (Though I have argued with people that I didn't have Arachnophobia before watching, or at the very least didn't know about it).
I don't recall a single scene or snip of dialog from the movie, but to this day I have an anxiety attack whenever I think about it, so you seem to have fared significantly better than I did.
That close-up of the spiders eyes reflecting the flames has haunted my dreams for 3 decades so far. And, the word you're looking for is "Trivial" because that's what useless knowledge is, trivia...trivial.
The sampling technique at the start of the movie is called 'fogging'. It's standard practice in tropical forests, where typically all the life is in the canopy, way above ground level and otherwise unreachable.
I'm so glad you spoke about the Avondale spiders from N.Z,I lived in the suburb that was next door to A/dale and we used to get them in the house quite regularly as we had a creek and a bit of bush land behind our house, quite harmless but large enough to almost cover the palm of your hand.We noticed they tended to travel in pairs so finding one we always searched for its mate, they were so well known around the district that the local council had a giant metal framed spider built and installed on the A/dale roundabout in town.
The spider drained the photographer’s body for sustenance over the long journey back to the states.
That is mothereffing Julian Sands in the opening scenes. RIP.
I was at a theater watching a movie next to Arachnophobia and you could hear the screams over the movie I was watching which I believe was Problem Child. Which btw is a movie that I recommend for y’all to watch 🙂
Oh man, was not expecting George to drop a Children of Time reference.
"Eight Legged Freaks" is a must now...
Yes. Almost every single spider in every single scene, is real. That's why Jeff Daniels looks so panicked when the General walks on him - there is an actual tarantula walking on him.
And Jeff Daniels actually has arachnophobia in real life!
Way back when I rented this movie you could see things that you shouldn't have been able to. I can only assume they got the ratio wrong for home video where you could see more than you did in theatres.
- When the spider legs appear on the side of the coffin you could see clearly that there was a metal rod controlling the spider legs, it was essentially a puppet. (it didn't even have the full spider body, just the legs)
- When they injected the mouse with the venom and put it in the jar, a hand from a crew member came up from the bottom of the screen which then took away jar with the live mouse in and replaced it with one with a "dead mouse" inside!
- During the shower scene as the spider was sliding down the actress' chest you could see that she was wearing a towel.
Probably more things happened too but it was over thirty years ago!
Yeah, this happened a few times back then when home video didn’t know what they were doing. No idea what happened in 1990 unless the studios decided to save a few bucks on QC that year. Another example was during one of the shots of Johnny Depp sculpting ice in “Edward Scissorhands” you could see the thing that flung the ice particles into the air at the bottom of the screen.
My speculation is that the movie was shot using an open matte in which the top and bottom of the frame is taller, and then cropped down to the intended aspect ratio for the theatrical release. Techmoan demonstrated this on the VHD release of Back to the Future. This was apparently somewhat common in early home video releases.
RIP Julian Sands........"Legend" 1985 and “The Fountain” 2006….would love your take on The Fountain especially. Thank You Cinebinge!!!
I used to think it was silly, but I’ve grown to love Simone’s custom intros. ❤️❤️❤️
Jeff Daniels is such a versatile actor. He's fought spiders, aliens, bombers and Jim Carrey.
30 years later and this movie still gives me the willies. Hair was standing on end for most of this reaction! 😱🕷🕸
30:09 Simone checking the cup before drinking..
The heart monitor is really interesting when you compare different movies. It makes sense that this one with its more real premise produces a different response compared to Descent.
Woah, Steve “Bugs Are My Business” Kutcher is a name I haven’t heard in a while. He was the go to guy for bugs and creepy crawled in Hollywood for a while. He would refer to himself as ‘Steve “Bugs Are My Business” Kutcher’ during work calls. He was the best in the business, and he would tell you that often. 😉 Not to say the guy didn’t know his stuff but he also knew self promotion. 😳
Alright 2 minutes in, petting the cat drops the heart rate... so far so good.
(typing that without it sounding dirty was harder than I thought, still not sure I succeeded)
Now on to Eight Legged Freaks for Simone 🤣
I love the reference to Children of Time. It is such a good book! I didn't think of that connection, but I can see it once you mentioned it!
The "embrace" when the spiders were mating was the male trying to survive the mating. He's trying to position the larger female spider so he has a chance to avoid her fangs when they finish.....
25:08 has got to be one of Simone's best screams ever. 😄😄
25:09
@@dennisdrozdov1424 Seriously dude?
“Wonder what species is that?”
It’s a huntsman. They’re big and fast but it’s rare for them to attack humans but when they do it’s defensively.
In Australia, they are known to cause car accidents as they keep landing on the driver and spooking them when they’re driving.
They probably used a few different types.
Simone was surprisingly calm during the Descent haha, got a good heart rate
As mentioned by other, they used harmless New Zealand spiders. They were "trained" by using monofilament line and a furniture polish spray to make "paths" for them. They also used hair dryers on no heat to move them around. Not one single spider was killed. Great care was taken to make sure none of them were injured. The crunch of the spider under John Goodman's boot was make sure crunch cereal. There was a gap in the boot so the spider would have plenty of room and not get hurt.
You SAW the spider move the eggsack to the basement. Goodman was absolutely right.
The blonde English Man, is British actor, Mr. Julian Sands. RIP.
In the first half of the movie, I think Simone’s heart rate was highest when she saw cheese!
Ah, a perennial TV/video favourite! And watching this on TV, I remember it was quite easy to see how some of the FX were done, as the TV version was full frame instead of the 1:1.85 crop used in theatres. You could see things like mechanical rigs pushing the fake big spider along, and the switcheroo when they test the venom on the mouse.
I was 6 when this movie came out and I remember seeing trailer commercials for it on TV. I didn't like spiders because I kept hearing about how Black Widows could kill you if they bit you enough...It was the first time I saw an ad for a horror movie. My older sister explained to me that sometimes people like to watch movies like that because it's fun for them. When I was a teenager, I watched this on a Saturday night movie show and it helped cure my fear of spiders.
Gotta love Julian Sands (Dr Atherton)... it's so sad that he's gone. 😢
I would highly recommend checking out Warlock from 1989, which also stars Julian Sands opposite Richard E Grant...great movie
I really wish I had cameras in my eyes because there's this one little spider that keeps dipping down in front of my monitor. He first showed up during the opening credits, and just popped back down at about 12:40, right after the first victim. Apparently he loves spider movies. I guess it's nice to see yourself represented in popular media.
The film used over 300 Avondale spiders from New Zealand, chosen for their large size, unusually social lifestyle, and harmlessness to humans; they were guided around the set by heat and cold. The spiders were tested for "friendliness" with humans
Your heart rate spiked to 80+ when you talked about John Goodman at the end. Secret celebrity crush established
I love the heart rate sensor idea. Recommend getting one that's quicker and doesn't average but it's a fun audition.
It's always funny when you just take a step back and look at movies like this, where a regular animal is portrayed as being actively antagonistic towards humans. Like it has a grudge and knows what it's doing. Plus in this specific movie how the spider is making all sorts of noises when in reality they're dead silent.
Hey it's George with the Starcraft 1 Ghost voice line.
Man, the part where the guy reaches his hand into the cereal box to munch on some as a snack and finding a spider in there really messed me up when I was a kid. I ALWAYS would check inside the box first before pouring myself a bowl of cereal after that for like years before I finally got over it.
Literally felt something on my ear while watching, funny how that works, just look at spiders and you feel like they're actually on you.
Also, I think Simone's heart monitor backfired, as it rarely rises when she acts shocked or frightened, telling us that it's all an act and she's really feeling calm as can be.
Had no issues as a kid with creepy crawlers until I saw this in the theaters. Eventually grew out of it but this had a much bigger impact on me than Jaws did with the ocean.
The spiders used are the Huntsman spider - native to here in Oz... Which is why we can't take this movie too serious as they are a very common house spider.... and while they can give you a little nip, they are not dangerous... great for keeping flies and mosquito populations in the house down
I think having George wear a heart rate monitor when he's watching scary things would be a good idea too. It'd be funny if he wound up more scared, and more often, than Simone. The look on his face when the smaller spiders came out of the sink was priceless. 😂
This film is why I think there should be an Academy Award for animal handlers. If any film deserved that Oscar, it would be this one.
I can't recall the exact species, but the spiders used for filming were a non-venomous variety of huntsman spider. Apparently great care was taken to ensure their well-being on set. For example, there was a cavity cut into the bottom of John Goodman's boot so he could step on one without hurting it.
LOVE John Goodman playing the country bumpkin exterminator! Best "supporting actor" between him and the spiders...
Just watched the movie “Warlock.” He’s the guy at 5:14 that says “look at theee markings.” WOW. It’s so cool to see actors from other movies that i never payed attention to before
I grew up backed up to forest and our house and all the others in the area had Black Widows around them and in the woods. My friends and I used to collect them and feed them to the local violent Bulldozer Ants. The Black Widows shoot their silky webs at the ants while trying to escape. There were also lots of Tarantulas and Scorpions in our area.
Jamie Hyneman, the other guy of of Mythbusters fame, created the “General” animatronic spider mostly seen in the final standoff as one of his earliest works in special effects/film!
This is one of a very few channels I have the bell ringing for new uploads! Great chemistry =)
Simone's heart was racing at those deviled eggs 😂
I noticed that too, LOL! Mmmm, deviled eggs.. 😋
There's a great behind the scenes video about this movie. Basically to get the spiders to move on cue they blew air through straws at them from behind.
To answer George's question, the species they used for the spiders are Auckland Huntsman spiders, from New Zealand. Thankfully, they're recorded as being completely harmless to humans, to the point they're actually popular pets in New Zealand.
Also, the way you reacted to Kathleen Kennedy's name in the opening credits; please don't tell us you two actually like the recent Star Wars, or God forbid the new Indiana Jones.
Hello, FYI, they had an Olympic tryout for the spiders, trying to find the one that would do all of the "tricks" they required. they used hair dryers to direct the spiders as they don't like high heat.
I am from Mexico, here the movie was classified as unsuitable for heart disease. It's the best spider movie I've ever seen.
Glad you enjoyed this. I had forgotten how entertaining it is.
RIP Julian Sands.
I recommend checking out the soundtrack! Not only do they really try hard to match up the songs, they also include sound clips from the movie!!
Specie: coin money, as distinguished from bullion or paper money
Species: (singular "species"): organism classification rank
Same George. The big ones don’t bother me, especially if they have fur/hair. I’ve held tarantulas before.
The smaller they are the more they freak me out because they’re so easy to lose, especially in carpet. Then you’re left knowing there’s a spider somewhere unknown but near.
I’d recommend “Kingdom of the Spiders.” It’s an old, cheesy classic which uses real spiders (tarantulas in particular) and stars William Shatner.
The fact that most of the music cues are ripped straight from old Twilight Zone episodes just makes the cheesiness more glorious.
Best part of seeing this in theaters in the dark? Using your hand to simulate a crawling spider on your friends' shoulders during the tense parts.
Siskel & Ebert both enjoyed this film saying; "the most fun you'll ever have being scared". 😲
Simone, I want you to know I understood your 4 different dogs joke, and absolutely loved it. Just made me like you a little bit more than i already did
The lead actor for "A Clockwork Orange" was terribly afraid of snakes but powered through it for the film
I have a tarantula named Athena and all she does is sit in the corner of her box in the corner of my living room like a house plant, she’s harmless as scary as spiders are they, like the saying goes are far more afraid of you than you are of them, remember people your a giant compared to them, all it takes is a boot and their done for😂
The species of spider they used for the movie is the Canadian hiving city spider.
