I found you via the “when UA-camrs come out” video - I’d watched several years of Philosophy Tube in a short time, and the algorithm pointed me your way. I checked out the channel and was frankly amazed never to have seen you before. So your back catalog was my next deep dive, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly. You’ve become such a staple of my UA-cam watching that it’s hard to believe I’ve only been following for a year or so. Congrats on ten years!

Congrats on the 10 years. I found you in a sea of sad trolls at the beginning of Capaldi's era. So 9 years ago - wow, didn't realise it had been that long or that I found you so early. There were so many of 'those type of channels' around that I didn't think I'd find a decent place to discuss DW. Almost didn't get beyond the first vid I saw of yours but something niggled at my brain, so I gave you another go and I've never left. 🙂

What I love about you and your channel is the way you are able to verbalize exactly what I love and don't love about pop culture, especially Doctor Who. Over and over when watching your reviews or your commentary on an episode or a movie, I find myself saying, Yes, *that's* what why I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. That's the bit that I loved but I'd not recognized why until you expressed it so eloquently. That's why I wasn't able to connect to that character. That's what was bothering me about that scene. You are unusually good about pinpointing the problems and strengths with the shows and movies I enjoy. And you do all this while being unashamedly you, which helps give you an authenticity that's rare on this platform. Thank you and here's to the next ten years (at least!)

I don't know exactly when I first found your channel, but at least a couple years ago. Before the pandemic, anyway. I don't remember what video it was exactly, but I looked over in my recommended and saw "Oh, cool Drag-Queen Auntie type character being snarky about Doctor Who. I'll watch that!" What I saw was a combo of similar interests, intelligent humor, and flamboyance--and I was totally down for that.
I subscribed by like the second video of yours I watched, somewhere around then--and haven't looked back since. TEN YEARS?! I had no idea! I knew you had a big archive but...wow! Congrats! :)

Congrats on 10 years! If I'm remembering this correctly, I discovered your channel in late 2015 or early 2016, while I was still living outside of the city where I live now. I think it was because of the Doctor Who videos, or the DCEU stuff that was going on at the time. Anyway, I went back and watched the original scenes you did with Nathan and Nicole and that's why I stuck around because those scenes were exactly how my friends and I would behave when we hung out. And I've been here ever since, minus a couple of years where I just needed to get away from geek UA-cam channels online, due to the trolls in the comments, and other channels being very negative. I still think my favourite videos, besides the early scripted stuff, have to be the Doctor Who videos where you talk about stuff from a production standpoint rather than an in-universe story standpoint because, as someone who hasn't seen ALL of Doctor Who, even alot of the modern day show, it helps me understand where the show was in the real world because it's not something I watched as a kid, since the reruns were done here in Canada by 1992.

I can't remember the exact time I started watching this channel, probably around early to mid 2018? It was one of, if not *the* , first channel I subscribed to on UA-cam. What struck me most, was how eloquently you expressed your reviews and views, and even when those were critical it was never done with harshness or hate, you could tell it came from a fan.
I had started off as a causal viewer, basically for the Doctor Who stuff, but what made me a subscriber was the LGBTQ+ content. The first time you took off the flat cap, changed your glasses and talked about topics that were relevant to me was incredibly uplifting and freeing, plus informative. And, as ever, delivered with great expression and consideration. Your sign off always made me feel just a little better, especially in times when things were not so peachy - a little light was shone upon the darkness.
👏👏 Congrats on 10 years (the history recap was really interesting). Let's raise a glass to the next 10! 🥂

Can now proudly say I've gotten most of my family and many friends on the same bandwagon - to the extent that whenever a new Chibnall Doctor Who episode aired, one of us would immediately say "aight let's see what Council of Geeks has to say about it". I'm not sure when I first saw a Council of Geeks video, but I think it was between 2016 and 2018, before Capaldi's era. I saw fan essays on Doctor Who and her science fiction and I noted hints and occasional discussions of LGBTQIA+ topics. I liked that you gave fair, thorough analysis, without the hate-mongering that was growing at the time. The more I saw videos from here, the more I liked, and somewhere in there, I subscribed. Also around then, you began giving more overt coverage of queer topics and you had begun giving more expression, "switching out the look" and coming out. Cool! I'm here for both still. I like that you have strong opinions and I like that you sometimes challenge my own opinions. Keep up the good work. It is very much needed these days.

    • @benw9949
      @benw9949 2 роки тому

Ooh! I haven't seen the "See You Space Cowboy" (Cowboy Bebop) podcasts! I will be sure to check those out. I need to rewatch the show. -- Correction: I must have first found the channel during the Capaldi era, not before. Not sure if I'd seen a video in 2016, but sometime in 2017, I think. -- Around then was also when I first saw Jessie Gender's videos. I wasn't sure at first what to make of that, except there was always earnest heart and love for science fiction and Trek, and then coverage of LGBT topics, and I wasn't sure at first what was going on with Jessie's gender, just that it was ambiguous. My first experiences with trans folks were online in Farscape fan forums, and I came out (gay) during that time. So I was still pretty new to trans folks and I didn't have the vocabulary. But I was finding things in common with my experience growing up gay. I'd also seen Jackson Bird's videos before he had transitioned. I'm cis and gay, but I've found I kinda feel like I fit in as a fellow misfit? Or something like that, haha.

I suspect (hope) that once series 14 of Doctor Who kicks off with RTD as show runner again and a new Doctor and Companions, that things will pick back up. There will be rumblings from the "we-hate-everything" "roll-for-views" crowd and from the prejudiced but vocal minority. But that's on them. I think there are plenty of fans and potential new viewers who will like the new show. I am eager to get back to good Doctor Who. Now maybe Jodie and the other actors can move on to something better for them and Chibnall can move on to find whatever he's good at. Also, I liked Big Finish's Space 1999 tribute episode, and what other content I've heard from them has been very good. So I hope for more good stuff from there.

Congrats on your 10th anniversary (sadly I had to leave the livestream of this as I was visiting my parents so had to go offline). In terms of memories I'm proud that we got to sponsor a couple of videos, including one of the She-Ra countdowns. The Ghostbusters 2 trial video is excellent (though sadly did not go down well with a couple of friends who were Ghostbusters fans, which is a shame but I tried!) Mainly I think what I like is the way you analyse media in general- even if I don't agree, I can see what the argument is and there is clear justification. I'm also gutted that they took down you reading that Dr Who Choose Your Own Adventure during the livestream, that would have been fun. Congratulations on making it this long, I can’t really imagine what the journey must’ve felt like. Also, since it’s probably not far off from now, a preemptive congrats for when you hit the 60k subs mark!
I haven’t been here nearly as long as some - what was it, late 2016 I think? So roundabouts six years? - and admittedly I’ve not been the most consistent in viewing or comments on your content. Nor have I probably always been the most tactful, and while I don’t recall such things in specific detail I have felt after some times that I didn’t show the most consideration with my word choice. Or shown my ignorance in some areas. For all that I apologise, and while I hope not to make any flubs I can’t promise that I won’t; I’m only human, and I try to improve daily hopefully forever. But… I do appreciate what I learned from you and your content and will be around, on the fringes of the COG at least, for the foreseeable future.
In any case, it’s been enlightening to see the history of the channel (and how it was in conjunction with everything else you were up to) summarised. I feel even more appreciation for you and the content you’re making knowing a bit of the journey, and I feel honoured that I caught even a glimpse of that going forward.
Good luck Vera, and may this be a thing for years to come still.

Love this video. I believe I joined in around 2018, and have enjoyed watching your content since then. I also love the videos where you take some risks in terms of editing or shooting (like the interview video about youtubers and their coming out), it sad that they don't perform as well. Ironically i also really like how you discuss and frame the different celebrity scandals, because it gives context and actually helps me work through how I feel about them - but I get why you don't want to go all in with that unless the celebrity in question is somehow related to your content. Last thing you have an error in the CC (around 25 minute mark), normally I wouldn't mention it, but I feel like this one is bad. Its when you are talking about coming out, and instead of saying "discussing myself" it says "disgusting myself". I'll edit out this comment if you want when it is changed (and already edited out the exact time stamp), so that fact that it is there isn't memorialized, but I didn't want to not say something about it. Congrats again on 10 years.

For what it’s worth, I enjoyed your Inside No. 9 reviews more than any of the other videos on your channel.
I admit that it’s partially because No. 9 is my favourite show, and, aside from Weelin, no one else on UA-cam ever seems to do justice to it, but honestly, you brought up some really great points about the show, for example when you analysed the joke about Oona Chaplin’s character being transgender (or not, as you noted.)
Any chance you’d ever think about bringing those reviews back?

Congratulations! I started watching in the "let down your hair" days of the LGBTQ issues in media content, and have appreciated your thoughtful commentary over the years.

What a great history video. I no longer remember when I started watching on a regular basis, but it believe a Rocky Horror video was the first video I found. Your JK Rowling response was likely the video that made me want to subscribe.

I think I started watching you just after your coming out video, I may have seen one or two videos from you before then. A lot of what you said about being gender fluid clicked with me and I said to myself "holy sh*t! Is that what I am?" I came out to my wife (who sadly passed last year) soon after that, and finally came out publicly in 2020. I think I mentioned this before in one of your live streams, but you probably don't remember, but I did want to thank you for helping me realize what I was.

Needless to say, I had to click.

I think I started watching in late 2017. Which was the year I started on UA-cam myself. Before I started a channel I hadn’t really watched any UA-cam. To my shame I mostly dismissed the platform and didn’t think it was worth looking at. 🤦‍♂️
Is your current room, with the Red walls, the same one as the old stripy wall papered room? Just redecorated?

At first I didn't like your queer content, but my curiosity got the better of me and you helped me in my own journey.

I think the first video was the video of you discussing queerbaiting, and being so happy to see an older genderfluid person on youtube. I never really seen anyone with the same gender identity as me in media in general and even when I did find it was clearly written by someone who had a limited understand of the term.

Ms Geeks (if that is indeed your real name), I've been around for around for about four of those ten years and I've enjoyed myself immensely throughout. I was six when your channel started and it's really a miracle that it's still going and has only got better over time. I'm happy that your happy, and here's to ten more.

I don't like the angry videos. Anger warps your judgement and tends to result in very bad arguments. (It can also make you seem more masculine, and you definitely don't want that.) I prefer a happy Vera, even when you're talking about unpleasant topics.

There's nothing wrong with having or sharing your opinion about the angry videos. But I saw this and I thought I'd bring to your attention that equating anger or hostility with masculinity, while certainly not a new concept, is part of the culture of toxic masculinity. It's a misandrist way of thinking, and like any sexism, it poisons your perception.
(I don't know your personal history, and don't mean to invalidate anyone's experiences. I'm suggesting that there are awful individuals, and there is a long history of extreme familial, social, and political conditioning for boys/men to bury any vulnerable emotions. One way to stop the endless cycle of toxicity is to stop putting masculine-negative speech out into the world. Let's stop pretending this has anything to do with sex or gender, rather than patriarchy and personality flaws.)
