most importantly, i feel, the bass creates a warmer sound than a guitar - which suits me more - and has a different sort of tone and timbre, especially in altered tunings. and in addition to all of this, as i'm a bassist (and former cellist), i'm used to four strings and used to trying to maximise the use of those four strings as best i can.
Ten years forward- it's gorgeous- it only needs listening to, after that the explanation is superfluous. You have wonderful ear, and four strings have never been limiting for you.FR
Zander Zon My first thought when I began listening to this beautiful rendition of Johann P.'s Canon was that it would make a wonderful bridal march. The Canon is a very popular bridal march and this one is quite appropriate, but different enough to stand out above the generic ones. Good choice Trista!
Thanks for your kind words and I'm flattered that you want to play this version on your parents' anniversary. I'm very sorry to say that I actually don't have any tabs for this arrangement. I do hope that it's a nice 40th anniversary, and I wish your mom all the best.
it is very refreshing to see and hear someone who takes the time to learn, the perform a song like this in their own style and on their instrument of choice and do a great job
@DominoDylan - thanks for your interest in my album! it should be available within the next couple months. information about it's availability will be on my youtube channel and myspace page. regarding playing bass with no reverb - that is not really my style. the way that i approach solo bass is that i feel every note on its own should sound pretty - like a cello. also, i prefer being able to have more range - which is where altered tunings come in. thanks.
well, to try to answer your question, i use a normal, long scale bass strung with piccolo strings. piccolo strings' altered tuning capabilities allow me a massive pitch range (about an octave), which makes for lots of interesting possibilities. for example, i can tune my lowest string to the e of a standard tuned bass, as well as an octave higher. changing the tuning of my instrument in various ways is how i play my solo pieces and how i approach solo playing in general. (continued...)
@AggieTreed no, i'm not. victor wooten's technique is: thumb down, thumb up, first finger pop, second finger pop. the technique i'm using is more similar to matthew garrison's four finger technique, which is all plucks: thumb, first, second, third - and the pattern continues. i'm also using my thumb to play arpeggios on the lower strings. :)
I got Married to this tune Zander. Her name was Pudence Thompson, it was outside in Riccarton, Christchurch, New Zealand and three children later, she is still the love of my life. Ha
My first thought when I heard the first note played was to have this at my wedding some day and it seems everyone on here wants it as Well! I value this piece so much and you have give it even more calue to me! Thank you!
I like all different types of music, but this is my favorite song! My wife walked down the aisle on our wedding to this song too.You are amazing, and on a bass too. It was a blessing to hear your version, loved it!

Coming across a player like you doesn't happen very often at all. You have the best tone for a solo player I've ever heard and your technique is outstanding. I'm really glad I came across your channel. I just wish more people knew about you!
I've heard this song many times but hearing your rendition was like experiencing an act of creation. Magnificent. And reading some of the other comments brought a tear to my eye when I learned your piece was used for people's weddings. What an awesome thing it must be as a musical artist to know your creations have been used to bring joy to people's lives. Keep creating Zander. I'm definitely a new fan. 🔥🔥🔥
Hi Lilly, thanks for your message and for your kind words! Firstly well done for sticking with it for 8 years - that's great perseverance! My main recommendation would be to get a teacher. Having someone guide you week in and week out would be hugely beneficial. If you can't do that, you can get some great bass books at Bassline Publishing. Get a book for something you want to work on (they have a huge selection) and then practice just a few minutes EVERY day. Hope this helps and good luck!
Can't say enough about your numerous techniques. I am, and have always been, a giant fan of the bass guitar. I play every day and I collect (at 25 or so basses now) and am impressed nearly beyond words. Your stuff inspires me to forge ahead constantly into the great unknown. Thank you for your artistry sir!
@Arondevil1 i'm in standard fourths. i'm not sure exactly what the notes of the strings are - probably C F Bb Eb. either that or up or down a half step from there (for each string).
Honestly and without exageration, this ranks up there as one of the most beatiful music I have ever heard played on Bass. You really nailed it man. Keep it up.
no doubt, the most breath taking Canon I ever heard on youtube. Sounds it was written to be played like this. Kudos my friend, that was stunning play all the way! I have goosebumps all over now...!
I don't know what to say other than praise God for your ability to make phenomenol (sp?) arrangements for songs on the bass. I'd take me years to get this good.
On my album, I'm tuned B E A D (I think I might be a tone higher on this video). Basically, it's standard fourths though, so it can be played with regular strings easily using the same fret positions.
ベースでこれほど美しいカノンを聴いたことはありません。 動画はときどき見ますが、久しぶりに聞くと、何か新しいものが心に響きます。 今まで投稿を控えていましたが、初めて投稿しました。 本当に素晴らしい才能。 I have never heard such a beautiful canon on bass. I watch videos from time to time, but when I hear them again after a long time, something new resonates with me. I've been refraining from posting until now, but I posted for the first time. really great talent.
I'm not one for making this sort of comment, on the contrary it usually annoys the hell out of me. But seriously: Who in their right mind would dislike this. It's insanely good. I'm so jealous.
As a longtime bass-player, one who's been playing longer than you've been alive, I'd like to tip my hat to you. You're phenomenal... period. As for the comments of how a bass "is meant to be played"... if every bassist had that limited mindset, then we'd all be playing root notes in 4/4 with a pick.
May I ask? This is the most divine sound from a bass guitar I have ever heard. no joke. This is the most pristine sound from ANY instrument I have ever heard. You sir are an astounding musician and once I get my bass guitar in a week, you will be my inspiration to improve. God bless you man and you are amazing :)
Absolutely wonderful and a masterpiece in every way!! The relaxing and soothing sounds of Pachelbel's Canon entertwined with your work gave me chill bumps! I appreciate your hard work in making this beautiful song!! Thank you Zander Zon!!
thanks and mine too. on the album version i'm tuned to B E A D (low to high). for this performance, i might be C F Bb Eb or Csharp Fsharp B E - i've forgotten!
Beautiful. I love the pace.Does anybody remember a PBS program (circa 1980) about manned flight that ended with this song? I think it was a hang-glider over snow in slow motion. It was the first time I heard Pachelbel's Canon in D (... Major - the second saddest of all keys).
Thanks a lot! The quick flutter of notes is not an effect - it's all finger plucking, and mainly with my index, middle and ring. If you look closely you might see it!
Hands down the most beautiful bass version I have ever heard. It's one of my favorite to play on bass myself and this version is amazingly inspiring and absolutely beautiful. So many thoughts and emotions felt while listening. Beautifully done my friend.

yes it is indeed warmer. it sounded better than a guitar

Your are amazing
My wife walked down the aisle to this song when we got married. She wants to do it again in 2 years, but with your version when we renew our vows.
Michael Ibarra Wow - thank you so much! That would be a real honour for me!
+Michael Ibarra surprise her with a live performance by the man himself
Michael Ibarra It’s been three years, how’d it go?! :)
I walked down the aisle to YOUR rendition of this song... This has always been one of my favorite pieces but I absolutely love your arrangement :)
+Olivia Sico That makes me so incredibly happy and proud to hear. I'm so honored, Olivia. I hope it was an amazing wedding.
Olivia Sico who's cutting onions? very touching thoughts
Very emotional times here.
CRINGE
I used this video as the music to walk down the isle when I got married last year. It was perfect! Thank you so much!
Wow - I'm flattered! Thanks a lot, Trista, and congratulations on your wedding!
Zander Zon My first thought when I began listening to this beautiful rendition of Johann P.'s Canon was that it would make a wonderful bridal march. The Canon is a very popular bridal march and this one is quite appropriate, but different enough to stand out above the generic ones. Good choice Trista!
Best version of this piece of music on UA-cam.
this day and time I notice very few people caring enough to say ''thank you'' you never miss that opportunity.. So,thank you for being one of the few
Thanks for your kind words and I'm flattered that you want to play this version on your parents' anniversary. I'm very sorry to say that I actually don't have any tabs for this arrangement. I do hope that it's a nice 40th anniversary, and I wish your mom all the best.
i'm so glad my music can touch you in this way - thank you for your comment!
Canon always put a lump in my throat. This version definitely delivered. Great use of harmonics.
It's great to have had such an emotional impact. Thank you so much for your comment!
How can people dislike?????? man, that's ridiculous how good this is!!!!!!!!!
glad you liked it, rob! i appreciate you taking the time to listen...
Your harmonics are just euphoric every time I hear them!
it is very refreshing to see and hear someone who takes the time to learn, the perform a song like this in their own style and on their instrument of choice and do a great job
thanks for the kind words, guys! they mean a lot!
thanks, man!
the tone is probably due to a combination of factors:
zon bass
piccolo strings
reverb settings
eq settings
fingerstyle
Thanks for asking. Not at the moment, but most likely sometime in the next year.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again... the BEST version of Canon on the internet!
One of the finest pieces of music on youTube period.
One of my favorites. UNBELIEVABLY talented. my jaw is dropped.

thanks a lot for your support! i'm so glad you like it! : )
thanks for the kind words, everyone!
By FAR, the best and most original version of canon on youTube!
I play in a metal band, but when the other guys aren't looking, i'm checking out your vids. Awesome playing. Lovin the harmonics.
I got Married to this tune Zander. Her name was Pudence Thompson, it was outside in Riccarton, Christchurch, New Zealand and three children later, she is still the love of my life. Ha
That's awesome! This piece of music is timeless.
My first thought when I heard the first note played was to have this at my wedding some day and it seems everyone on here wants it as Well! I value this piece so much and you have give it even more calue to me! Thank you!

@phineasndani

i don't remember how long it took exactly. maybe a couple weeks to come up with the arrangement and practice it...
Just beautiful!!! I absolutely love seeing the boundaries of this instrument being stretched -- Thank you, Zander.
AMAZING ... best bass adaptation of the song i have ever heard
possibly the most relaxing version I've ever heard.
@Arondevil1
i'm in standard fourths. i'm not sure exactly what the notes of the strings are - probably C F Bb Eb. either that or up or down a half step from there (for each string).

dude your talent on the bass is truly amazing .beautiful playing..
Omg this is great. I am die-hard fan of Canon played in string-quartet versions but this is sooo... beautiful.
Gotta learn to play it too!
Very good. The arpeggios sound very crisp, especially for a bass.
Fantastic, like everything you play....especially the harmonics blow me away...
fav´d!
i used standard fourths.
i think i'm C to Eb, though i can't remember.
no doubt, the most breath taking Canon I ever heard on youtube. Sounds it was written to be played like this. Kudos my friend, that was stunning play all the way! I have goosebumps all over now...!

Utterly Beautiful... and has everything I love about the bass. You are the most creative player I think I have ever seen.
Yes, definitely. All you have to do is get hold of some! I like D'Addario.

simply beautiful. I wish you would teach me how to play bass like this... its simply the most magical sound that I have ever heard from an instrument.
Egad! That was beautiful. I had to listen twice. Once without watching the video. Hard to believe that's a bass in some parts. Amazing.
Fantastic sound and performance.

This is simply amazing, Zander. Truly one of the most beautiful interpretations I have ever heard.
Simply spectacular. I rate you right up there with Victor Wooten and Stu Hamm. Just fantastic.
Just beautiful. Canon is my favorite; I have heard a b-zillion versions which I love. Yours is my new favorite.
Thanks, Kim! I love that George Winston version. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Holy shit can't believe it was 13 years ago!!!!! This is my fav version of Canon in D so farrrr. Love it man. Keep it up!! 💕

I'll dare to call you talented .. I'm astonished both by your arrangement, techniques, sound and feeling
