  • I already love this game. Volume view is an extremely cool tool to have here.
    As always, thanks for watching!

    From watching the dev logs, there was NO Z fighting of textures because the computer was calculating a 4D space, not using overlapping 3D models of the spaces.

    Everyone I've seen play this missed out on a lot of information by skipping the crystals. They are very worth checking out.

      Yeah, that bugs me too. The crystals have a ton of useful tips for the game and neat info about 4D geometry.

    I enjoyed watching you play! The game is an absolute marvel. There was a tip in one of the levels that I think you missed that can come in handy: Go to volume mode (v), snap to ball (b), and zoom all the way out (scroll). This lets you see the whole level geometry at once.

      Yeah, definitely check all the crystals; they either have useful tips or a least some neat info about 4D geometry.

    I actually think that the amount of work needed to get it working in a game engine is trivial compared to hyperbolic space.
    As we are already used to dimensional projection, (3D to 2D), and likely using matrices to represent position + rotation. (Normally 4x4). I suspect that a 4D game "simply" needs some other matrices, but that the operations/GPU code/math is otherwise unchanged.
    However, doing level design for this HAS to be a nightmare! Not to mention figuring out HOW to visualize more then the 3 dimensions we normally see in a intuitive way (the ghosts and volume view). Especially volume view is an amazing idea IMO!

      Check out CodeParade’s dev logs about this game; they really provide a lot of insight into how the game works.

      if you watch his devlogs he mentions all of the things that make it difficult

    I like how the game describe it is kinda like a box without gravity but I still cannot visualize how the map look like in my mind

    • @bluexberry7350
      @bluexberry7350 4 місяці тому +2

      but inside box it kinda like removed up down visualize make you 'lost' when your ball in mid air but make sense since when the ball in mid air there's no barier to stop the ball go anywhere

    24:38 Though you chose these challenge courses xD

    20:51 This level is better played without volume view. You can get the ball past all the cones in one shot, and it's easier to see if you choose the right slice in normal view.

    Don't forget to use the help crystals. They teach you about useful hotkeys and settings.

    6:36 I think you will get used to it and then be able to do all that.

    I think it's better to do the challenges later, especially since the challenges are way harder thna the normal courses

    Would it be possible to mirror maps by just flipping them?

    • @PowBolim
      @PowBolim 3 місяці тому +1

      Kinda, it's said on one map how a 3D right shoe is the same as left shoe just rotated.
      Nice thinking!

      By kinda I mean I don't understand better to give a better response haha

      indeed! 3D objects are flat in 4D space, so you can flip them around just fine. An object must be asymmetric in all 4 dimensions to have chirality in 4D.

    What does a hole look like in volume view, and also why not play entirely in volume view? It seems much more straight forward

    • @YayDragons
      @YayDragons 4 місяці тому +2

      A sphere, and it seems like some levels were designed majorly in volume view, so they make more sense using it (like the blocks in a cylinder course), but many don't

    • @Poondaedalin
      @Poondaedalin  4 місяці тому +3

      You would think that, but there are some things that only make sense in the standard 3-dimensional view, since gravity (and a sense of what "down" is) is way harder to understand in the volume view. Slopes just look like walls that apply force, and gaps are often completely unreadable since you often can't see the extent of the gap from a "forward-facing" perspective, so it helps to use the 3D perspective that has a sense of verticality, even if it gives less information on paper.

      Volume view is like lying on the ground and looking around - you can see everything that's on ground level, but you can't see over hills. Notice how when he's in volume view, 4D hills just look like there's a grass plug in the way. That's a hill blocking his view because he's lying on the ground. So while volume view is indeed very useful - you still need to stand up sometimes. I've found that I'm constantly switching between both views while playing, because both are very useful.
