    I've been watching your journey since the start when your Mom saw you off on the Approach Trail to Springer. I can't imagine the heat and humidity and that must be a trail stopper for many thru hikers throwing in the towel. But... Glad you pushed on to Katahdin. Ian... If you are still posting these videos for Amelia, just want to say THANK YOU! Keep them coming. :) "WeatherVane"⚡☉☁🌧

      Thanks for watching, WeatherVane! The heat and humidity in the mid-Atlantic and mid-summer was horrible. A LOT of hikers dropped off the trail in that section, and I imagine the heat and humidity contributed in some way. I definitely had my moments where the heat got the best of me too, it wasn't going to keep me from Katahdin though.
      Ian did an amazing job editing and releasing videos for me while I was hiking the trail. Once I returned home, I took over editing duties beginning with my post-trail update and episode #60. It has been a learning curve for me, but episodes should be released every Tuesday now. Stay tuned for the rest of my hike!

      Thank you! Yes, at this time I am only able to publish 1 video per week and often each video only covers a few days. Thank you for following my journey. Working hard to get the rest of the videos published soon!

      Thanks Kerry! Yes, it was a VERY warm summer in the Mid-Atlantic states and made hiking really tough at times.

    Great video. Imagine that. ;) Can totally relate to the snake. I came within 2 or so feet from stepping on one in Doughton Rec. Area in NC. Thanks to fatigue and a bit of colorblindness I actually heard it before I saw it (lesson learned). Thank god he let me know he was there. Stinging Nellies on the left and a steep gully on the right and the most he moved was to curl up a whole foot from the foot wide trail. Turned a North Carolina hot and humid 13 mile hike into a 15+ mile hike with the last 1.5 on the super hot Blue Ridge Pkwy asphalt. Thanks for sharing your journey. You could have stopped once you stopped but you didn't and that's cool as heck...

      Glad you heard the snake first! Must have been a rattlesnake then. Do you know which type? Better to walk around the snake than get bit, I suppose. There were definitely times on the trail when I just had to wait it out. Thanks for watching my journey. Working hard to get the rest of the videos published!

    Please keep the videos coming! I’ve been following your videos from the beginning, which seems like about a year in video-release time. I saw in another comment that you’re planning another long trail, although you wouldn’t say which one. Very exciting! ... Some great cloud shots in this episode.

      Thanks for following my journey! Working hard to keep the videos on schedule. Fell behind this week, but the next episode is currently uploading and should be posted tonight. I'll be releasing all of the videos from my hike every Tuesday and post-trail videos are in the works. There IS another thru-hike in my future, the details of which will be released SOMETIME in the future ;)

    Great video amazing views! Quick question, what are your thoughts on some type of bug jacket, such as an Exoficio Bug Jacket from Amazon? I think Early_Riser_71 sported one. Take care. Lamplighter 2019 out!😉

      Thanks Lamplighter! Until I read your comment, I had no idea what a bug jacket was. From what I can see, these seem to be standard Nylon and/or Polyester fabrics that are pre-treated with Permethrin, which is a chemical bug repellent that is safe to use on synthetic fabrics rather than DEET, for example, which will "eat" nylon and polyester. Many hikers treat their clothing, backpacks, and tents with Permethrin themselves before and during their hikes, myself included. There will be a post-trail video about Permethrin and other bug repellents. For now, I would say it's more important to find a jacket that works for you and treat it with Permethrin at home. Let me know if you have more questions about this. I am happy to share more about my experiences.

      Gin•Gin Amelia Klos Thank you Gin Gin for responding to my question. The reason I brought up the subject of a "bug jacket" was simply because of something you said in your video about how awful the black flies and whatever other type of bugs might be out on the trail. Getting bit every second or two doesn't really appeal to me, ha! 😨 So I was just wondering in hind sight if you would have perhaps preferred some type of "bug jacket" to help you from going insane! Looking forward to your eventual post trail wrap up of all of your thoughts and assessments of your amazing hike. Cheers! Lamplighter 2019 out! 😉

      If you hike SoBo, the black flies in Maine are a problem in the spring and early summer. Hiking NoBo, black flies were not terrible. Mosquitoes began to become a problem after the NOC in North Carolina and continued until the White Mountains. Ticks were bad from Virginia through Massachusetts. The gnats is probably what you are referring to when I am going "insane" in my videos. These began in PA and continued to Vermont. Bug repellent will keep them off of your skin and clothes, but they DO hover around your face and often fly into your eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Groovy and Jesus broke down early in PA and purchased bug nets to wear over their heads. In retrospect, that is the one thing I MAY have done differently. It was SO HOT and HUMID though, I'm not sure I would have been able to take the added heat around my face and head. I would DEFINITELY not have been able to wear a bug JACKET with how hot it was.
      Let me know if you have any other questions about this. I am more than happy to help in any way I can. And I will be adding some of these comments to my post-trail videos so other future hikers can benefit from the questions you've been asking.

    Not only are you apparently hiking solo - it seems like there were few others on the trail.

    • @ameliaontheat5127
      @ameliaontheat5127  6 років тому

      Through this section of the trail, yes, I was hiking solo. There were still several other hikers on the trail at this time, though not as many as there were in the south. As I continued north, the number of thru-hikers on the trail grew fewer and fewer as there is large number of hikers who quit the trail somewhere along the way.
