    My longest trip was 10 months. I spent 3 months in Spain on a culinary internship, shipping my knife gear and uniforms back to the US before moving on to other countries in Europe for 7 months (Romania, France, Italy, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Turkey). I bought winter clothes abroad and donated them when I left. I've been semi-nomadic since 1990 so I've got it down but love to find out about new travel products! Heading to Philippines for 2 months in a few weeks...

    My longest trip was 7 months (3 Thailand, 4 Philippines [during pandemic]). While in Thailand (Maha Sarakhan) I rented a condo for three months at a bargain compared to a hotel/Airbnb as long as I used the AC sparingly.
    While in the Philippines to acquire an extended visa to return to Thailand, I was caught in the Pandemic there and spent the remainder of my trip in the Philippines under lockdown (I even managed a trip from Luzon to Mindanao (Cagayan De Oro) during the lockdown. I actually had a collapsible backpack that I used like a weekender. This was the trip where I realized that half of the items I packed never left my bag. My "homebase" was in a town just outside of Angeles City (20 minute ride).
    My secret is that the vast majority of grooming and hygiene are accessible at my destination (7/11s are in abundance there, as well as the host countries equivalent groceries and Pharmacies, which is a boon for carry-on travelers). My destinations even have grooming items specific to my ethnicity.
    My motto is:
    Seven shirts and a pair of pants = 7 outfits
    Seven shirts and two pairs of pants = 14 outfits.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  6 місяців тому +1

      You're so right about being able to access most essentials for grooming and hygiene! If your requirements/preferences are very specific it may be more difficult, but on the whole we all have the same basic needs ;-)

    I just love your videos! So much useful information. Our longest trips so far have been a month long, of which we have done 2 of so far. We are now planning a 3-month Europ and UK trip with carry-on only. We have been trave3lling in some form or another our entire marriage which is currently at 41 years. Every trip we learn something new, and sometimes still make mistakes but for the most part our travels have been stress free. I love making packing lists and then actually packing to go on a new adventure! The key for my travel is a capsule wardrobe, everything goes with everything plus a few light scarves to liven things up and add variety! Keep those videos coming Nora! And happy travels from Winnipeg!!

    We recently found ourselves in a "conflict zone" that we'd traveled to before it became one and had our return flight and all subsequent ones canceled by our airline and its regional partners, which most other airlines did as well, making it a challenge to get out.
    An additional, pressing factor was that we had to catch another flight back home a week later, outside this region, plus we had a bunch of hotel reservations in interim region that we'd booked months earlier that were not easily cancellable, if at all.
    We did finally manage to get out, safely, on one of the few airlines still flying out of it, for substantially more than we'd paid for our original flight, and were able to take advantage of most of our hotel reservations but two, one a budget hotel that wasn't a big deal, the other which graciously refunded our payment even though it was officially a non-cancellable reservation, and make it home on time.
    So I was wondering if you've ever made or were considering making a video having to do with traveling to "conflict zones" and ones that were liable to become one, since quite a few countries and regions have tended to become ones in recent history.
    Not in terms of the underlying causes of such conflicts, of course, as that would be way outside the scope of your channel, but in terms of the travel-related risks involved and what steps could be taken, aside from not traveling to them in the first place (which isn't always possible or easy if it's work or business-related or to visit family and such), to help mitigate and deal with such issues.
    I would also include countries and regions that are not technically "conflict zones" but which are still complicated and challenging to travel to and visit, for political, religious or other reasons.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  6 місяців тому +5

      Hi Kovie,
      I'm sorry you found yourself in such a sticky situation, and glad that you got out safely!
      Your suggestion is interesting, and I'll think about it; my idea would be to create an episode about what to do if you find yourself having an emergency abroad; it could be an escalating conflict, or a natural disaster, etc.
      Given your experience, do you have any suggestions? Are there things you did that were instrumental, or things you did that you would do differently if it happened again? I'm all ears!

    • @kovie9162
      @kovie9162 6 місяців тому +4

      @@NoraDunn Well, first, the place I was in was Israel, where I'm originally from and was there to visit relatives for the Jewish holidays when it all happened. No need to get into all that as this is clearly not the place for it, but I only bring it up because, although conflict is of course not new to the region, it was and had been very quiet in this respect when we arrived, as it had been literally every time we'd been back going back decades (I guess we were lucky or just knew not to travel there when things got bad).
      So while we were lucky enough to be away from the main conflict area (some close calls though), we weren't prepared, in terms of travel arrangement, and hadn't bothered to pay extra for flights and hotel reservations that were fully cancellable without penalties. We did buy travel insurance with Delta, with whom we'd booked all our flights, only to find out that it didn't cover situations caused by war or conflict, so it was of no use. I'm guessing that there are more expensive kinds of travel insurance that do cover such situations, but I don't know anything about it.
      We were only able to get out by sitting on the phone for literally days until we found something. Even the US state department wasn't very helpful at first, eventually arranging emergency flights and ships out but for an indeterminate cost and without telling us the final destination other than it would be one of several European cities, and we were on our own upon arrival. And I was able to get a refund on one hotel night that we weren't able to use by politely explaining our situation and asking for a courtesy refund on a normally non-refundable booking.
      My suggestions would be to know the risks and dangers of where you're going before you go and make sure that you're prepared to handle whatever might happen, only book fully cancellable or changeable flights even if it costs more or accept the risks of not doing so, have a list of alternative options just in case something like this happens, and leave some room in your plans for unexpected last minute changes that you have no control over, kind of like how you've advised people to not book connecting flights with less than 90 minutes between segments.
      I'm sure that there are other things that one can do to prepare for and deal with such situations and similar ones like medical emergencies, bad weather, natural disasters, etc., but I defer to the experts for that (hint hint). 😉
      There's also I suppose different kinds of "non-normal" situations that one should be aware of and plan for, like traveling to places holding major sporting events or celebrating local holidays nearby that you may not be aware of, like the Olympics, World cup or Ramadan in the mideast.
      Years ago my sister and I traveled to France in August, not realizing that it would be really hot, massively crowded, half closed because August is when many French people go on vacation and lots of places shut down, and totally closed on one of the days we were there, Assumption Day, a holiday we'd never heard of because we're Jewish and it's not a major holiday in the US.
      So, be prepared is my overall suggestion, and do your research.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  6 місяців тому +2

      @@kovie9162 Thanks for elaborating and sharing more about what happened and what tips you have!
      Sadly, most travel insurance policies don't cover war-related events, which is a bit ridiculous especially in instances where the event wasn't "predictable" per se.
      Though I would say one kind of travel insurance that would help is a policy that has a "cancel for any reason (CFAR)" rider, which gets you a full refund on pre-paid flights/hotels/tours if you cancel for any reason. That's a workaround.

    • @kovie9162

    Spent 4 months in Australia. Very easy to buy what you need even if it’s a different brand that what you’re used to. However, I really missed, and needed, my Zicam. I went to the local pharmacy where they looked up the active ingredient but found no comparison. Luckily my husband was joining me soon, so I had him bring me a box of Zicam. Also surprisingly, even though Oz has some great pain relievers like Paracetamol, I can’t find anything that works as good as Exedrin Migraine. So I always, always carry a good supply with me.

    Excellent video! These are valuable travel tips. Adapting on the road is something I learned after a year of full time travel. I spent a few thousand dollars on "travel" clothing before I left home and I ended up giving it all away after the first few months. 😂 The clothing you can buy (and thrift) in your new location is already uniquely suited for the climate there - and usually inexpensive. Also if you're a solo traveler, it helps to blend in a little and not always stick out as a foreigner. 😊

    I’m traveling through SEA and carryon has to be under 7kg on airlines here (unless you’re able to pay extra: airasia allows you to pay for the Fast Pass Perk which allows 14kg). Other airlines I couldn’t upgrade the carryon kg. I’d love a video on carry-on vs checked baggage. I was all about carry-on only and packed super minimal but the restriction of under 7kg (too light for my 11kg bag) has made me checking a lot more than I thought.

    You always have great information, thank you :) . My longest trip was supposed to be 3 months solo in Australia. Unfortunately, family circumstances brought me home after 1 month. I had never traveled solo on such a trip before and it was nearly 15 years ago, so we didn't have YT to help! I WWAAAAY overpacked! I could bring 3 pieces of luggage, so I did! 1 was a checked bag. Managing all of it on my own in an unfamiliar place was exhausting and unnecessary! I still had a fabulous time but less would have been better! I have, of course learned and now pack more efficiently. I often get away with just the personal item. I am leaving soon on a 3 week transatlantic cruise that I will start by flying to England, then go to Spain 5 days prior to boarding the ship. I am doing it with carry-on and personal item, with a few hacks worked in. I was going to do just personal item and buy stuff in Spain but caved last minute and paid more for the carry-on. It's still relatively light packing, so it should be good. Take good care, safe and happy travels!

    My skin care when travel is just oil (solid is better), sunscreen, and spf lip balm. Oil works from head to toe. I bring painkiller and bonine (electrolyte if hiking or heavy sweating was involved). Shoes are critical (waterproof for cold and wet climate; breathable and easy drying for hot and humid). They must be in good condition and robust. Clothing items are the easy part. They are replaceable. The bag is critical; no cheap luggage but no $1000 roller either.
    Electronics are heavy and thief target. Nomad content creators probably bring laptop, camera, gimbo, drone, extra chargers, solar panel, gopro, tripod, etc.; necessary and space/weight consuming.

    I don’t know where you’re going to ski, but you will struggle to hire skiwear in Europe. Generally you can only hire skis, poles and boots.
    I was amazed on a visit to Canada to find you could hire skiwear!

      Good to know, Bob! I'll actually be able to borrow from a friend in my case, but as far as I know it is available to rent, or at least to buy second-hand.

    If you’re plus sized, don’t plan on being able to easily replace things on the road.
