- In this video, I got the opportunity to discuss the real story behind the recording of the Bon Jovi hit, Runaway, as told by session guitarist extraordinaire, Tim Pierce.
Many people don't realize that Tim actually played the guitar parts, not Richie Sambora, and Tim gives us the story of meeting Jon Bon Jovi, the gear he used in the studio, and a lot of fun discussions on his recollection behind the making of this piece of music history.

Tim is a legend and his credits are mind blowing.
Absolutely agree, and you couldn't find a more humble person.
Theres a reason bon jovi was able to transition from "hair band" to a regular rock band people enjoy outside of trends. Hes a good rock singer and he understood to hire professionals to do their jobs. He hired the best people to be in the band, write songs, produce and promote. Whether you like them or not they still play the same size arenas they ever did and their new material actually gets a lil radio play on easy listening and country charts.

Wow.....That's amazing!!.....I watch EVERY video from Tim, and I knew he played for ALOT of really big bands, but I never knew he did this!!......One of the very best things about Tim is that he doesn't brag about where he's been, who he's played with or for, he just likes to play his guitar, and that's good enough for him!!.......Way cool interview, Steve!!......thnx for the super cool trip down Memory Road!!

What a great story to be there in the beginning I'm proud to say because of a friend of mine older brother working in New Jersey he got a hold of a bootleg copy and brought it back down to Louisiana no body new of the band here in SW LOUISIANA I REMEMBER EVERWHERE I WENT I HAD IT TURN UP AS LOUD AS IT COULD GO PEOPLE WE WOULD HANGOUT WITH LOVED IT MAINLY THE GIRLS WENT CRAZY AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY I'M TRYING MY BEST AT 53 lol it was about year and half later I seen him open for Ratt then I seen slippery when wet and unfortunately the last time I saw the band was for New Jersey tour to this day I'm a huge Bon Jovi fan such great talent hard working band and the best is to see what he and his wonderful wife are doing to help so many people in need really says it all about Jon a man with a big heart thats why he writes the songs that last a lifetime

I was never been keen on Bon Jovi till I saw some of their concert live at rock and rio back in 2017 "Runaway". I saw that on TV anyway. Good video both of you 👍

The collaborative effort you are describing about Jon Bon Jovi and the inception of his career is something I don't think you see very much now due the ability of people to make music with a very low barrier of entry. The marketing is the issue these days which a label would have taken care of.
Don't be embarrassed of what you've done. (even though I just watched the vid for the 1st time and it's cheesy AF) It honestly sounds great, and although you think it's cliche now, it's a part of musical history. If I was Ritchie Sambora, I'd be the one embarrassed at having to 'finger-sync' it. Bon Jovi was never my thing but it was too much bubble-gum for me. As an 80's kid I was chasing the Van Halen tone. Come home for Christmas!! I never knew. Awesome man.

Wow...I didn't know that was Tim on Please Come Home For Christmas...I learned that solo years ago and loved it. And it was Don Henley, too? Didn't he do his own cover of that in The Eagles? The Jovi version is what I consider the better.
What guitar does Tim have here. Looks like it has a Gretsch style bridge pickup.

OK, it totally makes sense to me now why that guitar solo is so absolutely over-the-top and amazing. Richie is good, but I don’t think he was that good back then. 13:44 GHOST! 👻
Richie actually did some great solos on that first album...some of his best I reckon. It was raw back then which made it more real

Great interview, but I would have liked to have known if he used any effects, but I doubt it back then. I saw Cknderella open for Bon Jovi in like 1984, and Jon could barely sing. The guitarists did most of the real singing and did a great job. It was Jon's birthday too they said, and he did an acoustic thing I remember flying across the stadium and they broke into a killer song. Indianapolis at Market Square Arena which has been torn down now. ♥️🤟♥️🤟

Tim gave you all the wrong information ... the song was written by my uncle George Karak .... jon stole the song and jons uncles threatened my uncle ... Jon changed one lyric in the song , one tiny line . My uncle ended up finally winning half the publishing thiugh he wrote THE WHOLE SONG. Absolutely anyone who was there including Dave Shwarsky knows the real story. So thats the real story , love Tims guitar playing and we share a mutual acquaintance mitchel froom , who produced my last record .
Johnny, you are correct that your uncle, George Nick Karakoglou wrote the song, but you are incorrect in saying that Tim "gave you all the wrong information," Tim didn't say anything in this interview about the how the song came about, who wrote it, its origin, or anything like that. If you look at the publishing rights, your uncle is credited as the sole author: globalmusicrights.com/artist/1423253

Im starting to think the awesome gig was never being in a band but being a session player. Think about it. You get paid, get to go home at night and if you contribute enough to the song you could get a songwriting credit and thats where the money is.
Yeah, getting to the point of being able to make a living and support a family with music, yet be able to actually be home is the ultimate career. The game has changed for us and the key to making a living is diversity in the industry.
