  • As usual, this European throws a curve ball. Not only is the problem obscure, but the lack of good wiring diagrams makes this diagnosis even more fun and exciting...
    Enjoy!

    I was at MINI cooper for a few years before going to an indy shop. I love working on these car. VERY easy for the most part. once you learn the little tricks like sliding out the connectors, it makes them super easy.
    Nice find.

    You don't even know how helpful this was. My daughter bought a mini 2003 as an extra vehicle. The car had 119k on it. She made it 20 miles after purchase and it spun a rod bearing. I did a salvage yard engine swap to a engine with 48k, (never ever do an engine swap on a mini) anyway finished it, great motor, and I had some suspicions about the reason the bearing spun because I went with her to purchase the car and it ran like a,sewing machine. Ok well when I did the swap I noticed very little coolant, now I'm am old engine bulider, owned an auto parts store, raced, all that so I have taught my daughters about vehicles and my daughter knew to keep her eyes on the guages. What i failed to teach her is the temperature sensor doesn't read anything but fluid so if you have no coolant it reads pretty much ok. It was pouring rain when she bought the car. Long story kinda short, the electrical gremlins decided to attack and stopped the coolant fan from working. Now also things are acting strange so I bet you this thing also has been wet and the same connector is corroded. Thanks again young man you have really helped me out. Of course all but the part where dad has to lay upside down in the floor board and solder all the bad wires. Thanks again

    Excellent job Ivan. I had a Mini not long ago with inop wipers. After pulling out the little hair I had left I discovered a fuzzy green wire under the under hood power distribution box was the problem. A piece of wire and solder finally was the fix. I have come to the conclusion after my tormenting experience and watching your video that the wiring in a Mini sucks the big one.

    This car actually has a Chrysler 1.6L engine that was built in the Chrysler plant in Brazil. Rover and Chrysler made the deal before these cars were built, and once BMW bought out Rover they stayed with Chrysler as the engine supplier for the first several years of the Mini's production. This engine was based on the Neon engine but with decreased displacement for use in other countries besides North America. This same engine was put into the Neon and the PT Cruiser sold in Europe as well as other places around the world. Funny how many folks will brag on their Mini Cooper engine thinking it is a BMW unit, and the newer ones do have a BMW engine, but the first several years of production of the new Mini Cooper all had a Chrysler engine in them.

    when you first measured the amp draw you had the door open, that was some of your parasitic draw by itself on the amp clamp, not that it matters to the fix overall
    Just so the viewers know to have everything shut off even the interior light and to wait for the fade out interior lights and doors closed before recording when your draw testing.
    keep up the videos Bro very informative

      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 років тому +2

      +stuzman52 Hi Terry, thanks for the comment! Yeah I sprayed the connector with WD-40 to displace some of the moisture, but the root problem I think was the clogged sunroof drains. It was an interesting one for sure, especially not being able to find diagrams of the power distribution or even the fuse box layout! Those pictograms on the fuse cover were funny. Turns out the power to the DLC connector came from a fuse marked with a "clock" picture...go figure.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52 8 років тому +1

      I know what you mean by those pictograms for the fuses and it's just up to one's imagination to what they could mean. The first time I saw them in a VW, I said to myself, "am I suppose to know what the hell these pictures mean." I guess the engineers decided to do it this way so they wouldn't have to print all kind of different languages when they sold the cars all over the world. Again, nice work without any kind of documentation to go by.

    Great diagnosis. Strange that you weren’t able to find the wiring diagram on such a common car. Also strange that a connector up in the dash was corroded like that without the surrounding connectors also being corroded. You think it was a flood car or there is a water leak flowing down through to that connector? Hopefully the owner doesn’t just drop a car with so many issues in some unsuspecting buyers lap. Hopefully he lets perspective buyers know it has some unknown issues. Karma is a cruel mistress...

      I can tell you this problem stems from the sunroof leaking down through the frame of the car into the wiring. There are small hoses that come off of the drain tubes and flood the car. They use some fancy clip that fails. A 5 cent zip tie at the factory would have saved many owners massive headaches.

    Get that tester that Scanner Danner has that checks relays and can start the car from the engine compartment. It bypasses circuits. I think OTC sells it.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  5 років тому

      I actually bought the UActivate kit from AESWave because I saw ScannerDanner using it! I used it exactly once and now it gathers dust on the shelf. Persnally it's easier to simply jump the relay terminals through a fuse and makes you think about which terminals to jump instead of trusting a fancy switch and some LEDs...

    • @rexanderson5458
      @rexanderson5458 5 років тому

      Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics Jumping terminals can cause a jumper to slip and short a circuit. The tester has an adaptor that matches the relay. It seems to be very useful according to watching ScannerDanner! If a chain jumps, wherever the rotor points, designate that as #1. Then run that wire to #1 cyl. Then run the wires according to rotor rotation, firing order, and cyl. arrangement. Maybe it'll get you home. Get another set of wires so hopefully they reach. It'll be slow, but it may prevent a tow! If the chain has slack, get #1 On TDC on the compression stroke on 0 turning the engine in normal direction only. Lift the distributor and point the rotor at #1 cap terminal. Turn the distributor way back opposite normal direction. Lower the distributor and turn the distributor to normal setting. Put everything back and set the timing. If necessary get a oil pump primer shaft or old distributor for that engine with the gear removed to line up the oil pump and distributor shaft. This causes the crank to have to rotate less to fire #1. This translates into power! My auto-mechanic teacher told us about all this. He said to put a little transmission fluid in the oil to remove carbon on the valve covers and engine. It has detergent in it. OTC had a Breakout box for most cars with OBDII and one for Ford OBDI EEC-IV 60 pin. Thexton had one. It checked voltages and resistance from the ECM. It plugged into the ECM with an adaptor. I have one now kinda rusty and I don't need it. I never used it. (Ford EEC BOB). Ford itself had one.

    Cool problem. Logic goes a long way in diagnostics. I always tell the younger techs I train at work and at school you need to figure out what is working correctly before you can get to the root cause of a problem. Nice job. Your name is Ivan right?

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 років тому +1

      +busjockey1 Yup! That's great advice, especially on a multi-problem vehicle. There are so many possible directions to take, so it's important to focus on one and quite possibly that will lead to the cause of the other as well as it did in this case!

    Making my way through your back catalogue.
    A business question as I'm looking at going back into diag as a side gig. How did you charge this out?
    First charge for diag. Second charge for repair.
    But after you repaired the harness, you said everything on the dash wasn't part of the complaint. Do you quote on that?
    I was a bmw tech and all of that (short of the service required) would have gone away with a fualt clear and reset tyre pressure system. Which is just a button on the center console. It would have been valued significantly lower at auction with the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

    BMW in their infinity wisdom did not bother to put clamps on the four sunroof drain tubes. I dropped the headliner and all four were not connected. Don't expect any help from BMW. When I purchased the car in 2002 (out of state) it would not pass PA state emissions. BMW customer service said there is no problem and try another dealer. I got a 1 time waiver from PA so I could drive the car. Two months later I got a recall notice for reflashing the ECU so it will pass inspection. Just my rant. Fun if they run. Most any dealer repair cost more than the car is worth.

      I’ve dealt with 5 dealerships and they rarely know anything about these cars. I had a pulley tensioner break and they tried to tell me the harmonic balancer I had replaced a few months prior failed, probably because it’s a flawed design and is bound to happen. When I told them I’d replaced the hb they said I probably did it wrong. It’s difficult to dig down to that part but it’s one bolt. Had it towed and didn’t ever go back. Right now I’m dealing with the issue in the video. Wish I’d known about the drains not working. This might be the last straw for this car. Fun as it’s been.

      +shadowdog500 Sharp eye! That thought crossed my mind too...a flood auction car? The owner said it had a clean title, and the fuse box itself seemed to be in nice clean shape. My theory is that the salt water from the carpet by the driver's feet got wicked straight to that connector. I don't think fresh water would cause that much corrosion on copper wire. Just a poor location, and the loom was wrapped in that fabric stuff which just holds in the moisture too!

    I have this issue with my car now, had a leak through a seal on my windscreen which over flowed under the scuttle panel and down the back of my day next to my wiring loom, in the last couple of days my engine starts and all the warning lights come in my dash my I have no back light on my Speedo and my rev meter doesn’t work at all so I’ll see if some waters leaked in and if that fixes the issue

    a friend in the trade called me to diagnose one with half the dash lights out, turned out they all worked but someone took the cluster apart and stuffed masking tape down the light tubes so they didnt shine through to the dash lmao

      Lol but don’t the lights have to come on and go off for an mot. Guess it was a bodgit and scarper job. Also wasn’t the r50 originally designed by rover in 1997 hence the “r” granted not a lot remains after bmw but I’d give it 1/4 British :)

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis 2 роки тому

      @@johnbee1574 A lot of the development work for the R50 was done by the Rover Group in the UK, and of course it was built in the UK as well so I think it's at least somewhat British, though being a "proper" mini fanatic I wasn't too keen on it at the time. The designer of the R50 was actually an American.

    You keep getting the battery current draw incorrect - there is no IN or OUT terminal on a battery, both terminals will show the same current with no respect to polarity. The polarity in current on a DC clamp, is dependent on the orientation of the meter that is clamped. One way will show negative amps, flip it around, and it will show positive amps!
