    Tegu puberty is a real thing and can be very scary. You work hard to tame a baby so it will be safe to handle as an adult, then they get to those teen years and oh man you start to question what you ever did to your parents to deserve this

    • @NicholasMati

      TBH, that looked more like a lizard looking for / expecting food. How much do you think the response was hormonal and how much was just from a lack of target training?

    Tegu is definitely my dream reptile, but I'd want to give it it's own room. A nice spare room, too small for a bedroom, but just perfect for a tegu enclosure. I'd durock the whole room and install tiling half way to the ceiling so it'd be easy to clean out when needed, and I could give it a HUGE space to dig itself a hidey and brumate. No space for that right now though.

      Thats gonna make getting to the right humidity very difficult though. And, unless you live in a very humid climate already, most houses aren't build for constant high humidiy. So if you can get it right, the walls of that room might start to grow mold after a while.

    • @Xiporah
      @Xiporah 2 роки тому +2

      @@0FynnFish0 I do live in a humid climate. My house unfortunately reaches 65 to 75% humidity inside in the summer. I have to keep dehumidifiers running on two levels of the house. It would be harder in the winter.
      My idea would require the sheetrock in the room to be replaced with durock and tiling to prevent mold. Durock is the type of cement wall boards that are used in bathrooms.

    I love my tegu. I was hesitant because I’m a first time reptile owner. Did my research for a LONG time before finally deciding to get him. Put in an hour daily for socialization/ training. On top of thousands for a custom built enclosure. This ain’t for the faint of heart. His enclosure is 8x2 and will be extended once he’s a bit bigger and does take up my whole living room. Most rewarding pet I have ever had by far. Even if he had Hobb’s temperament- he’s still family. I’d never give him away. Love your channel, man.

    A tegu is a dream lizard of mine for sure, but people waaayyy over-glorify owning a tegu. It isn't to say no one talks about how much work they take, but I always notice those videos has 1/4 the views of the "Puppy Dog Tame Tegu" videos. I swear some people think they show up ready to be on camera doing tricks.

      Shit I'm shocked by how fuckin cheap and available they are. I was just at a convention and some dude had like 20 of them at his booth, and a few other booths were selling small and large babies as well. They were 200 bucks flat and selling like hot cakes. seeing soccer moms walking away with a new tegu for their 5 snot nosed kids made me extremely concerned for the lizards as well as alittle envious. Hardest thing I did was look at those tegus, then look back at the tokay gecko with a tank for the same price and not buy the tegu lol.

    I worked in pet stores during the 90's to mid 2000's. Tegus and Nile Monitors were everywhere. I never carried them because of their bad reputations and I also knew that 99% of my customers wouldn't be able to care for them. You could buy a Tegu or Nile for $20-30 and my wholesaler sold them for $5. So many unsuspecting people bought these animals and they either were brought back to the stores or they just perished from neglect.

    Solid video man. I think you nailed it. Those snapshot moments we see on film and that “puppy dog tame” phrase is what does it as far as people not understanding the potential reality of what they could end up with.
    Luckily, for me, mine have been everything I’ve ever wanted but that’s not to say they don’t have their cons.
    Also man, could you do a video on how you ship your reptiles? I do some breeding too with box turtles, beardies , geckos etc and tegus being my next thing but it I’ve always sold within my state. I’ve read a lot of conflicting information

    You know what else bites? Dogs. 3 out of 4 of my dogs have bit me (all because 2 don’t like each other and have now been permanently separated). 3 of them are Shibas the “doge meme dog”. We have 3 because 2 are readoptions. People don’t understand how such a beautiful, 20 lb animal can be that much work. Im home 24/7 (unless I’m traveling) and they are quite well trained but it’s no different than having 4 toddlers to look after. They need to be entertained, exercised, bathed, cleaned up after fed, they get allergies and other medical expenses, they need babysitters when you are away, etc.
    Don’t get Any pet unless you can afford to care for it (hello 3,000$ vet bill). Don’t get any pet you haven’t thoroughly researched (we looked after our nephews for a month, then it took a year for a reputable breeder). Consider your age compared to theirs. Do you have a stable home and income? I wouldn’t rehome any of my dogs, ever (never say never) but I regret once in a while, not sticking to one or two. A pet isn’t a Christmas present, it’s a commitment.

    I'm in a studio apartment and my Tegu enclosure takes up my ENTIRE living room. Thankfully the style of enclosure I got looks really nice and I can keep my television and some other tanks of mine on top, but I got VERY lucky finding it.
    I paid 300$ for an 8x2x2 and the person who sold me it said he paid around 1500$ for it brand new. I had to drive four hours to get it, on top of that, I needed to have a large enough vehicle that the enclosure could fit in.
    A cheaper option I was thinking of doing was a grow tent, but I didn't like the way it would look in my apartment.
    I spend a lot of time with him, and a lot of money to ensure he gets all the nutrients he needs.
    It's a lot of work, but to me it is so rewarding and worth it ❤

    I love my tegu to death, I hatched your older videos on tegus and I pray my tegu doesn’t turn into a hobbs, he has been super sweet since I got him from Pretco October 2nd, was having him crawl on me on day 7 by his choice, and now a day he will cuddle on my hand on his basking spot but hobbs is always in the back of my head, mine just went down for brumation I think, I’m praying he stays lovely after

    Ok I'm crying I'm laughing so hard....I know I'm watching this and I know its about tegus...but I can't help it I feel the exact same way about my savannah monitor Mooshu...I've been working with him for a while now. We are on some sort of term.He doesn't mind me at all being around being in the enclosure...but if i go to touch him...he's like "O hell nah!!" It sucks because I've wanted a savy for soooo long...but I'll never give up on him...who would get rid of their lizard/snake because it's not tame in 2 or 3 weeks. Why even get one if thats the case....Also it's hilarious when ppl are afraid of a lizard bite but they have like 5 dogs who show their teeth almost all the time bwahahahahaaaaa worst bite I've ever gotten was from a person not an animal hands down
    Keep up the good work man, hang in there!

He sold her to someone letting them know what happened. The person knew the snake needed work she's an ass . After one month the snake is for sale again because she's an ass six foot long angry woman gonna bite you good till she knows she is ok .

    Personally, I would get rid of a lizard that big if I couldn't tame it. That's too much time, money, and space in my house to give up for 10-20 years. And if the lizard really hates me that much, it deserves a chance with someone else to be happier. I have several animals and would never abandon or neglect them, but certainly would rehome an ahole tegu.

    I get attacked more by my sulcata and bearded dragon than by any of my 4 tegus including one that was a wild caught adult from south Florida. Ranging from 5 years to my oldest who is 15 years old, I've never been bit by any of them. And they are all socialized with people and other pets as well. It's no trick what I did to socialize and train them, just common sense and keeping a strict schedule for them. And all my tegus are leash trained, target trained, and even potty trained. And I would suggest adopting an adult tegu over raising a baby one simply because adult tegus, even wild caught ones, are quick to calm and build trust with. Baby tegus are almost 100% fight or flight because of their size. And then there's the whole guberty thing which is hormonal hell like a pissed off ex-wife who's denied alimony and on the rag for six months straight.

    • @madlinfinn
      @madlinfinn 7 місяців тому +1

      may i ask how do you potty training them?

    • @Tullerchris
      @Tullerchris 7 місяців тому

      @@madlinfinn start with putting a literbox in the enclosure and one outside in the area where your tegu roams. Natural clay litter is best. Every time your tegu goes potty or you see your tegu's tail cock to one side, quickly put them in the litter box. Even if they don't go potty, reward your tegu with a treat every time. Repetition is the key. Mine learned in about a month. Now on leash when I take them places, I'll even put them on the grass and tell them to go potty. A lot of times within a few minutes, they will actually go.
