  • Today I'll explore a new way to load my firewood. Loading by hand gets tedious and exhausting. I'm trying to find a way to be more efficient. This may or may not be the solution. Let me know what you think.

The answer is totes that can be easily dumbed using a tractor or skid steer. For loose wood the grapple might work, but that's a big machine to be using for that purpose. The other thing to try to eliminate is stacking at the customer's location. I only do dump delivery, no stacking, and it saves me a tremendous amount of time to do the things that give me a greater return. If you could line up a few high school kids who would be willing to go after you dump and do the stacking, that might be a solution. Customer could pay them direct and kids could make some nice extra cash. Just a thought.

I drove by when you had grapple set up by that row, I thought that's what you were doing 😂😂 I'd say it worked out 💪

Your on the right path. You'll get more proficient in operating the grapple as you go. Definitely would try the grapple 90 degree like mentioned in the comments. It looks like youll get more wood in it like how you were stacking it in the grapple. But once you have the big piles itll be easier and you'll always have some to throw in by hand. Maybe a smal excavator with a log grapple or clam shell bucket would be easier n less muddy in the winter time.

Brad, can you try one thing different? Instead of closing the grapple on either side of the stack, turn the grapple 90° and lower it on top of the stack and start closing the grapple. The wood will look like how you stacked it in the grapple by hand if that makes any sense.

I bet that will work real good using the grappler truck for when you have bins

Good Morning Brad. I think that if you make your firewood corrals wide enough to drive the grapple truck into, you'll almost never have to lift a piece of firewood again for your cord deliveries. My thought is that when you make the corrals, leave them open at the front (where the firewood is split) and load it from back to front in the spring (this would mean that you put down the "floor" as you go so you can drive the machines into them), and unload them in the fall and winter from front to back, picking up the "floor" as you go. Any stray pieces that fall from the grapple will just fall on the pile, to be picked up with the next pick. Another advantage of this system is that you should seldom have to drive on the grass between the corrals to access the supply. The main problem with this system is that you are going to have to get good at estimating quantity based on how full the trucks look, but if you overdeliver like Chris (ITW), I don't think any of your customers will complain. Even if you overestimate by 10%, the time savings (and less wear and tear on the body) will more than offset the shrinkage. Keep up the good work. PS. For the cost of a cord of wood and a few hours of time, you can make each corral out of split-rail fence components and wire to match the fence that separates the woodyard from the property adjacent. Not only will these look better than anything made from pallets, they'll last for decades with almost no upkeep.

I’ve been using the facecord bags. Load with the skid and like shaver has a video showing the chains on his pallets and it hooks around the pallet and bag and you just lift it all the way up and tilt it forward to dump it. Super easy.

My theory all was was use the equipment you have at had. Nice work Brad, Pallets are cheap enough if you find them right. We just started using pallets under our cones.

I hope you are still going to use the pallets on the bottom of your "bins". You will still need to keep the wood off the ground.
If the wood had been stacked in the other direction it would probably have been able to be picked up easier.
Way back in the day, I used a conveyor to load the wood for deliveries. It was much easier to toss it lower into the conveyor than much higher into the truck.
Thanks for showing us how that went.

You don't know until you try! But yeah having another person on the ground would help out alot. Less up and down 😮

Ibc totes with a rotating forks is the best i believe. With you going to IBC totes is there plans to get a set of rotating pallet forks. Have a great day be safe

What would happen if you turned the grapple 90 degrees and grab the wood like you would picking up a pile of logs. Just a thought.

Definitely use the grapple for loading. Tossing every stick by hand gets old fast. Idk what your prices are but if you're sold out before Christmas you should be charging at least $10/ more per facecord. Or need to be splitting way more firewood. Cost of production, chains, fuel, time, maintenance ,insurance and equipment aren't free. I'm charging $15/ facecord for stacking but most times i get tips on top of alot of deliveries anyways. I stacked like 150 facecords of hardwoods this year to season. After like 50 inches of rain this year im switching to bins next year. Not happy about sorting thru 10 face of oak 20 month old oak to get 6 clean facecords. 4 face of junk oak i gotta burn for campfires now. Dead standing punky oak grows mushrooms like crazy when soaked . Solid Fresh cut oak and logs are the only way to go to make great firewood . If its ugly or soft sapwood its going in boilerwood pile so ik it's getting burned up this winter. Ideal setup would be a large blacktop lot thats sloped decent to drain water away and just pile up cones as high as possible. Then scoop and load a trailer with a big front end wheel loader in like 4 or 5 scoops.

It didn't work too bad 🤷 Worth a shot, saved you the bulk of hand throwing although it was higher to throw in to.

If you need a second person to load the grapple by hand to make the process more efficient, is that really any faster than having 2 of you chucking wood by hand to load a dump trailer?

How do you plan on getting the totes in the big truck ? im lucky to have concrete pad and figured out that 5 scoops with the big material bucket is a cord..... I flip 4 totes over into empty concrete bin then scoop and load dump truck. Not perfect but I dont have to leave the seat of the skid loader
