Dehydrating PIG Skin for Dog Treats! | Zero Waste

  • When we had our pig processed over the winter, we asked the butcher for all of the fat. We've slowly been rendering in down into lard for cooking and other project. The last bag we pulled from the freezer contained a lot of skin - so we figure why not do something useful with this instead of just tossing it in the trash. So we cleaned it up, and tossed in the dehydrator for 4 days, in an attempt to make chew treats for our dogs! Be sure to watch all the day to the end, so see if it worked - Love, Todd & Rachel

If I had a pig skin, I would probably make deep-fried pork rinds. They’re so delicious.

I use the skin (fat trimmed) for snacks too, boil the skin in salted water and cut into bite-sized pieces once cooled) dehydrate the skin pieces and store in fridge once glassy hard, then when we need crisps for dip etc I just take a handful of the small pieces (I like mine about 1.5 x 3 cm) and fry them up in lard or bacon grease until they puff up, you can season them as you remove them from the cooking fat, delicious.. the animals love them too 👌

how about try baking them first at a higher temp, then flipping them in the dehydrater? Good idea none the less.

I think after the first 24 hrs it might be easier to use a sharp knife and trim down the fat closer to the skin. Then finish the drying them.

When I’ve made jerky I’ve always been told to trim as much fat off as possible because the fat will have a shorter shelf life,

Yes that's why we froze most and the few we kept out are stored in the fridge

Another great zero waste idea. Nice job! I dry lemon peels on the wood stove and then ground them up for lemon pepper powder.

If you put that it in a deep fryer that's called Chicharon. Super crunchy.

when I did mine several years ago from a whole pig skin I actually scrapped the fat down & it worked really good & took about 2 days.

Definitely will remove some of the extra FAT next time, would have sped things up a ton!

I agree you have to scrape off the fat. Even if you dehydrate the fat it can go rancid. That's why you take the fat off of beef when making jerky.

So in Aus you can buy pig skin at the local super markets for a couple of dollars.
I feed raw to my working apbts, my pomeranians, my chihuahua and shepherd. I add this skin raw undehydrated as some fat content for the dogs when I'm feeding a little more bone.
I just give it as a strip they love it. This is a great idea also!

Wondering if you couldve scraped the fat off as much as possible at the 24 hour mark?

I'm wondering if you had boiled them first would that have gotten rid of some of the fat and decreased the dehydrating time? Regardless, it's a win-win for zero waste and treats for your fur babies.

When the dogs are eating/chewing them, does it leave a greasy residue on the carpet or floors?

I don’t have a dehydrator, do you think the oven on the lowest setting would work? I would also think that elevating the skin on a cooling rack above a cookie sheet is a good idea. Thoughts? 🤔

I have a 12# terrier. She looks like Toto. I used to give my pups Nyla bones. My pup cracked a molar vertical. The tooth will need to be removed someday. I took away all their hard toys. I give them quality and cheap stuffed animals to chew on. That tooth removal will be expensive since she will get her teeth cleaned at the same time. Otherwise I'd be interested in what you're doing for chew toy.
