  • For anyone who hates Fireheart, I’ll bet this is where most of the hate comes from. Whether it’s the fault of the character or the writing in this case is somewhat nebulous but what is clear I that this is the worst the first arc has to offer. But we have to get through it to get to Darkest Hour so let’s go.

I feel like I’m in the minority of liking a dangerous path, though admittedly it is mostly because of Bluestar’s unraveling and eventual sacrifice. I enjoy fireheart/firestar as a protagonist and I do agree that he wasn’t… great in this book. I feel like the Erins were trying to depict fireheart’s missteps as a result of him having to take on more responsibilities as a deputy due to Bluestar’s plummeting mental health, but it Could’ve been done way better.

Honestly, although this book wasn't the greatest, a feel that it could have been SO much better if just a few things had been written differently!
First of all, the dogs. Don't spoil the whole antagonistic force on the very first page of your book.
Second, Fireheart and Tigerstar need small rewrites. Tigerstar could have been WAY more antagonistic, and although other clans would realize that Tigerstar kinda sucks, Shadowclan would think that he was just protecting them while they were still fragile. This would also give Fireheart and excuse not to tell Shadowclan and the other clans about Tigerstar. He could be very afraid of Tigerstar now that he is in a new position of power and has a lot of cats who believe in him, and doesn't want to draw more attention, and therefore more danger, to himself or his clan. This would also explain his short temperedness and his negligence of other duties.
Thirdly, this anxiety and negligence could lead to the other tragedies in the book, like Snowkits death, Swftpaws death and Brightpaws injury, and Brindlefaces death. This could all be a result of Firehearts negligence due to fear, but Bluestar could take it as a sign from Starclan hating them. This would also cause Speckletails grief, Brightpaws renaming and retirement, and Sandstorms and Bluestars anger as a wake up call that he actually needs to do something to protect his clan, even if it brings on the wrath of Tigerstar. This could also be a good buildup to the dogs and could also give Tigerstar more character.
Anyways, that's just me spitballing what I think would work better.

I disagree about one point. Tigerstar keeping a low profile is perfectly logical. His power is recent and fragile, his new clan is still weak; the last thing he needs is for another clan to think he's a threat-more than they already do, I mean. He didn't want to commit to battles he wasn't sure to win, so the dogs were a nice way to get rid of as many thunderclan cats as possible and make his biggest opponent weaker.

I definitely feel like this book could have benefitted from having a more introspective look on Fireheart's character, considering all that he's been through and has to deal with up to that point. Fireheart's arc, I feel, is the main issue with the Prophecies Begin. While its plot has more focus than the arcs that follow, I can understand where people are coming from when they say Fireheart is a Mary Sue, because while he does things, I feel that he never really grows as a character. Even his insecurities about being kittypet are somewhat downplayed from his perspective. And I don't think he should've been written this way. I'm not asking for him to be brooding or angsty about his kittypet heritage, but at least show the effect his mistakes and adversities have had on him. The Darkest Hour is a good book, but could have had so much more impact if we had more investment into Firestar's personal journey and maturation into leader. If the Erin's said that Scourge amd Firestar were like counterpart, than make them true counterparts by showing Scourge's backstory, how he, like Firestar, had sought life as a rogue but used it for recklessness, contrasted with the controlled nature of the clans, and how seeking the guidance of Starclan lead Firestar to become the powerful, just leader he is now.

Imagine if Bramblepaw was apprenticed to Brackenfur and Tawnypaw to Sandstorm. Their personalities would work together so well. Tawnypaw has a bit of an attitude, so the feisty and intelligent Sandstorm would make a great role model for her. Brackenfur is never shown to have any prejudice against Bramblepaw, already making him a better choice that Fireheart. Bramblepaw is outgoing and ambitious, but is still rather anxious and indecisive, so the patient and level-headed Brackenfur would be great for him.

It probably wasn't their initial intention but letting the readers know something the characters do not - like the dogs being loose in the forest - is actually a true writing tactic. I believe it's called something like pathetic irony? Maybe? I don't quite remember. However, I do agree that this type of series doesn't really have a need for it.

Dramatic irony! I think the problem was mainly that the narrative still tries to treat it like a mystery even though it's obvious what's attacking cats. With some tweaks I honestly think dramatic irony could be used in their favor...building up a sense of dread in the readers, as they know it's only a matter of time before they come face to face with these huge dogs.

Hmmm...You know what could have solve a lot of problems? Have a new pov character or even several, rather than force Fireheart to be strangely passive all the time.
I think this book is the main reason why I could never understand the fans of the firestorm ship.
When I read the book for the first time as a kid, I dislike every scene with Bluestar, cause I found it hard to watch how a person who was once so great degrading slowly into a mess. But when I read it again a bit more recently, those were my favorite moments lol. Fascinating evolution of the character.

Given that the clans believed Brokenstar, someone who was already mistrusted by almost everyone when he said Yellowfang was a kit killer, they would probably also believe Fireheart. Though it would be interesting if Bluestar’s previous dismissals of his claims would make Fireheart believe that the other clans wouldn’t believe him either.

This book also introduces one of my problems with the series: the portrayal of non-cat characters. Something about the concept of all other species either being much less intelligent or much more violent has...unfortunate implications. Do I think anyone on the team had ill intent when writing the books? Of course not, I'm sure the authors are lovely people and this doesn't reflect on who they are. It just unfortunately creates a problem with the book itself.

Your issues aren’t big issues if they are issues at all. Everything you complain about is explained and none is out of character.
Tons of people love this book and for good reason, the stuff regarding dogs, bluestar, and brightheart are great and it’s explained why Fireheart doesn’t tell other characters right away and we see what happens because of that and that he regrets and it is also explained why he doesn’t trust bramblepaw.
Talk to most fans and they well tell you it’s good and they love it, and for good reason.
Honestly it’s one of the best books in the arc.
Fireheart wasn’t cruel, stupid, or out of character in this and previous books it’s explained why he mistrusts bramblepaw due to his heritage and doesn’t give an apprentice to sandstorm out of fear. Plus he has his reasons for not telling about tigerstar and later regrets it.
Fireheart is NEVER A JERK, and it’s explained why he KEEPS IT A SECRET, and it’s explained that it ends up being a good idea.
How is that out of character?, sure it might have helped to do things differently but guess what characters have flaws and these things are realized by him.
No characters do wrong things and are all trusting as usual and they have a reason it’s explained in the books
Here are some other videos explaining why it’s a great book
    ua-cam.com/video/8zBVosvcIOM/v-deo.html
    ua-cam.com/video/YYHgAjO0DlU/v-deo.html
Or ask almost any warriors fan on Reddit, UA-cam, Discord, or anywhere on the internet and they’ll tell you it’s good.
Come on I know you are negative in various videos but did we even read the same book?
It wasn’t a painful story, it was a great story
These aren’t big issues if they are issues at all. It’s explained why all of this happens in the story and no one is out of character.
IK in commenting twice but I just really disagree with you and this video.
How can one of the best books in the arc showing bluestar’s decline, brightheart, and the dogs be hated on so unjustly?
I can understand why you think it might help if he told about tigerstar or gave sandstorm an apprentice but don’t act like it’s not explained or it comes out of nowhere or that it somehow makes characters not themselves cause it doesn’t and plus these aren’t big issues and I don’t see them as issues much at all.
You’re focusing on pointless or small things and ignoring everything that makes it good.
You call it bad but your arguments are focused on things that don’t make much sense given they are explained and/or your arguments are blown out of proportion.
I don’t mean to hate on you and I like many of your videos but but whenever you make a video that’s way too negative (which can be more common than I’d like) and I can’t really sit and say nothing since I see no one else here has and especially since it’s a book worth defending.
Even if not perfect it’s still very good, much better than you make it out to be.
I’m sorry but you are focusing on the wrong things and what you are focusing on is blown way out of proportion.

    • @jenetikitty
      @jenetikitty 3 роки тому +19

In a setting where there are several dozen named characters, it's weird if only the protagonists talk. Fireheart has friendships and relationships with the other cats in Thunderclan, besides Graystripe and sandstorm, y'know? Like, those were cats that he lived with and had feelings about. That's true for nearly every cat in the clans. They have bonds and connections, and it's nice when those are presented clearly, by having minor characters talk with both protagonists and each other. It's... world building. it's character building. Knowing that Fireheart has a soft spot for Frostfur would make her death so much more heartbreaking.
Some books are pretty good about letting minor characters pass through and have a moment in the spotlight, but in others, sometimes any non-protagonists just don't even exist. Like, if you just picked up the most recent series, you wouldn't know that Shadowsight has two siblings, because they barely interact!
and a lot of warriors fans are really fond of the minor characters. (Myself, I love Princess, and think it's a crime that Fireheart/Cloudtail did not even SAY GOODBYE to her on screen! Later I loved Foxleap and Icecloud!) and they very much enjoy setting those moments where they reveal their personalities, y'know?

Warriors doesn't have a sexism issue. A shecat can be anything a tom can be, and there's two female leaders in the first series alone. It just so happens that we don't have a female main until series 2, so of course there's less female dialogue in series one.. but again, I don't know why that matters as long as the story is interesting.
