- Point of view street photography with the Leica M2, 50mm summicron dual range, and Fomapan 400 pushed to 1600.
Im by no means claiming these images are incredible, but enjoy sharing my experimentation and results with Fomapan 400 in the bright and contrasty situations I was shooting in for the day. I exposed the fomapan at 800 and developed at 1600 in Kodak's HC110 at dilution B.
I would love to hear what you thought of the results in the comments down below. And be sure to look out for the follow up video where I walk through the images, and give a commentary of my thoughts as to why I shot them the way I did, what drew my eye to them in the first place, and what I might have done different if I were to shoot them over again.

My name is Nick Mayo, I am a Michigan based film photographer and creative sharing my triumphs and struggles within the world of art and photography. I have a great number of videos lined up for sharing different things I've learned along the way in my creative journey, as well as some interviews with other creatives and influencers about their joys and struggles within the industry.
I’ve been sleepin on this channel for the longest. I now understand why Matt Day suggested it. You’re work is outstanding!
Dwight Daly Jr. hey thank you so much 😊 I really appreciate that
Matt Day is a no talent a$$hole.
Really enjoyed the video Nick, I personally shoot fomapan 100 (I enjoy more bokeh and slower shutter speeds for my work) and I think it's my favorite black and white film.
Only thing I've noticed is when you tell people they always come out with "oh... That's a cheap film" implying that you've got to pay a premium for good images.
I think this video shows that you don't.
Anyway, great vid and really pleased to have you back!
I definitely heard that very thing from some of the community. These cheaper films are underrated. They perform wonderfully, and have plenty of potential for making great work! Thanks for sharing :)
Man, such an awesome video! :) Fomapan is a great film, more so if one pays 1,2€ for a 36 frames roll as we do here in Slovakia.
Thank you so much, Andy! It was definitely a fun film to shoot! I appreciate the kind words
Love your POV. Need more of this type Nick, good composition
Ballisticone thank you so much. Now that I have the gopro more POV’s will come.
You're a talented artist man! Love the eye you have to be able to take your everyday surroundings and really turn it into beyond gorgeous artwork
Just recently bought some fomapan 400 to try out. I’ve shot the 100 in 120 and loved it. This may be my go to black and white for a while. Can get it really cheap where I’m at. Great video Nick!
Chris G Natural hey thanks so much. And be sure to follow up and let me know how you ended up liking it yourself.
you're awesome at street photography. great compositions. i'm trying fomapan 400 now thanks to you
Ah man, thanks so much! I really appreciate that! Please let me know how you enjoy fomapan when you shoot it for yourself. I would love to hear, and also see the results. Cheers
Yeah! The door with the word “open”. Love the grain. Super work. Music captured the mood.
Ah thanks so much. I enjoy that shot as well. I've shot a similar image in the past, but kept coming back because I felt there was more to be seen. Getting closer and closer with every frame :) Appreciate the kind words, thank you :)
Nice! I really like Fomapan 400. Just got my first roll of it printed directly to paper. It is contrasty, what I wanted. I like your photos, you have a great eye, especially for light and contrasts and composition. Some really cool abstract photos too.
Thank you so much! And yes, its beautifully contrasty!
loved the tones turned out super good! I really liked the repeating arches near the end of the video. I have a roll of Fomapan 200 in the fridge I have yet to try.
I love those POV video very much ! Very engaging.
Favorite image @4.33 The hanged shirt... You nailed it there. Isolation and composition, plus you had to spot the shot in the first place, not sure i would have recognized the harmony there passing by.
Looking forward the next video, as always.
Peace.
Thank you Jules! Im happy with how that shot turned out. Just felt like a moment of everyday for this guy. As if that's his spot, he sits there frequently and hangs his shirt in the same place each and every time. Im fascinated by that kind of thing. Thanks so much for sharing :)
Nick! This was a great video! Can’t wait to see the follow up!
Thank you so much, Dylan! Hopefully I can get it out by the end of the weekend, early week.
I pushed some Fomapan 400 to 1600 (overexposed even 1 more stop to get some info in the shadows) and the shades of grey are beautiful. Developed with Rodinal 1+50 for 24 mins (hell, yeah) gave me f... grainy but beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing this video. =)
ayy! love the POV's. that fomapan feels real good.
Alex Bolen it really surprised me with the results. Better than what most people said about it.
I know that walk, done it many times before. I've been using Ultrafine Extreme 400 lately, very nice tonal range, contrast. Foma looks great. Like your shadow stuff, you have a keen eye.
Thanks buddy! I havent tried Ultrafine yet. Perhaps it will be the next cheap film challenge later this year or early next. I appreciate the kind words :)
Nick Exposed It dries super flat, nice tonal range. Pushes fine. Good grain structure. It's not HP5 but if you like that, you like it. I prefer TriX, HC110 B normally.
Great shots! The Fomapan looks good as well. Looking forward to the commentary!
Thanks buddy! The fomapan turned out better than I anticipated. Its really a nice film.
I hope you shoot more walk around/POV videos.
baysidekicksass I’m sure I will. 😊 thanks
5:16 just made me scream
that's good man, that is goooood.
that composition!! awesome as always nick!
Thank you so much, Jho! Much appreciated
I’m glad that GoPro is working for you
Spencer Reed this was shot with Jacobs GoPro, but it’s what makes me confident the ones i got from you will work great.
Loving having you back nick! Awesome POV video! I specially love the image at 3:54! OverAll amazing ... 😆also dude I can’t go pass a chair with a beam of light on it without thinking of you!
Your photos are amazing!!!
gear war hey thank you so much. That’s so kind of you to say. 😊🙏🏻
The scans look nice, but it would have been really interesting to know how you developped it, and to see the negatives, and even better, some prints :)
EDIT: just realized you had another video explaining how you exposed and developed (but still no negs or prints ^^)
Limited darkroom accessibility in a small apartment meant I had to save my darkroom time for my exhibition work. Fair point on showing the negatives. Thanks for the input
@@NickExposed not saying this to be a film snob BTW. I don't think everyone wants to wet print and it's fine.
In the darkroom, negatives don't lie ahah.
Probably the ones inside that building were the best!
Well done Nick, I like the placement of the GoPro. You have a great eye, nice images.
Great as always!
Vic Whitcroft thank you so much 😊
Results looking good man!
Thanks brotha!!
Great shots! makes me want to give fomapan a try. Keep it up!
Ole Melkevik thanks so much. You should definitely give it a try.
Really liked the Fomapan results Nick! They turned out brilliantly; way too difficult to pick a favourite to be honest. :)
Hannah O'Brien Photography thank you Hannah! Very kind of you to say 😊
I was thinking of shooting some Fomapan 400 @ 1600, and glad I came across your channel. I shoot primarily Rolleiflex TLRs, Rollei 35 rangefinder, Nikon F5, and Contax G. Your M3/Summi setup really suits this combination. I have a Leica III somewhere, can’t find it after so many moves. But I’m definitely going to be watching your 2nd video on these rolls. Which developer did you use for these? Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Nice contrast, I normally shoot hp5 400@1600. My favorite photo it is the one with the shadow leafs, at the end of the video. I don't know if the Fomapan can hold the push it as well as the hp5, but on the pictures in the video they looks fine to me. If you have shooted hp5@1600 before could you tell me if the fomapan works similar to this, does the grain keeping the structure? Thanks
Really cool. There is something different about it compared to HP5.
Bryan Corbin oh totally. They are two completely different emulsions. Each with their own character.
Man, haven't visited in awhile but man your hair lookin' fly!
Nikki Celis hahaha. Thank you 😊 I recently got it cut. I appreciate it
Damn, all these shots are nice! Too hard to pick a favourite 😅
Too kind! Thank you so much :) Hope you guys are doing well!
When this video came out, I liked it very much. So after coming back to it, I'll have to un-like it to "like" it again. The POV stuff is really enjoyable, kind of like a contact sheet, but only in video form. Also, as Fomapan is so cheap around here, I really have to try it out.
Love the video, some great images. I've never used Fomapan, must give it a go.
Thank you Dave! It was a fun film to shoot. Not sure if I will go with it again for some time, but definitely made some work I’m happy with throughout that bulk roll.
Nice. I've been metering and developing Fomapan 400 at 800 and havn't really been a fan of the results. Maybe I should try developing it for 1600 instead. Nice vid and nice shots, will be trying this out later this week
Nice video. I love taking photos while I'm walking the streets. I've used Fomapan for some months and I'm very satisfied with the results. It's a very good film with a nice fine grain and an excellent exposure latitude. I´ll keep on using it. Just a question: which developer did u use?
Keep on doing these videos!!
Hey thanks for the kind words. I did like Fomapan for street work. Not a giant fan of it in low light situations indoors, but that’s just me. I developed it all in HC110B.
Hello Nick,
What developer do you use for the Fomapan and the HP5, and dilution.
Thanks Don
why pushing film at the daylight scene? and you still overexpose the film, i cant get it
So I expose at 800 and then push to 1600 in development. So lets say at 1600 the shutter speed calls for 1/500 at f11, I would expose at 1/500 f8 to hit 800 iso metering, which gives that stop of overexposure. Does that make sense/? This allows me to shoot both outdoors and indoors on the same roll of film
Great !
The development is normal?
Hi Nick! You pushed while shoooting or at development? Bye!!
Emanuel Martin Fernandez I meter for 800 when shooting and push to 1600 when developing. Hope that helps
Great shots, Nick. I've shot a couple rolls of Fomapan 400 but have never pushed it. I'll have to give it a try :) And thanks again for replying to my IG post @jayf6354
Hey of course! I try to stay as connected to messages and posts that come through on instagram as I can. I always appreciate the communication and connection. Thanks so much for your comment and kind words :)
Hi Nick how were you metering these shots? Sunny 16 for outdoors, and then indoors?
The M2 has frame lines for 50mm but still needs goggles to focus?
What do you usually meter for, shadows, mid-tones...?
At the start, do you mean you’re shooting at 1/500 to underexpose?
1/500 to overexpose by a bit over a stop. About a stop and a half. Pushed it to 1600 in development. The 1/500 gives me a nice dense negative that ends up scanning nicely but especially works well in the darkroom if I end up printing any in there. Hope that helps clear up.
@@NickExposed thanks, so should the ideal exposure have been 1/1000? Nice video by the way
@@methuselah12 ideal exposure is relative to what you’re looking for in the negative. I prefer to overexpose my negatives to pack as much info in the emulsion as possible and have the latitude for printing. 1/1000 would have given great results as well. The images would have looked nearly identical at the end of the day because I scan into the same density regardless. The big difference comes in the darkroom. I hope that makes sense.
Thanks mate. Yes I agree that exposure depends on what you want. I guess my point is that if you’re “overexposing” then you would ideally be exposing at >1/500 ie 1/1000th etc.
Hi i'm new to film photography. Wanted to try fomapan 100 film. Can i also pushed it to 1600?
Hey, welcome to the wonderful world of film :) You can definitely give that a try, but Im pretty confident it wont give you the most standard results. That far of a push on that thin of a emulsion will end up giving you some pretty posterized images. Stark stark white and deep deep blacks with no real latitude in between. I live by the rule that stuff like that is always worth trying at least once if you really want to. But I just want you to have some healthy expectations going into it if you do end up trying it out. Hope that helps :)
I love fomapan... quite a bit of my black and white work is done on it. IG: @xenzanographer
@skillzspinz
Koudelka used it as his main stock for a while. From what I hear
Silly.
