Dear Elisha: Thank you so much for the very kind words about the book. (I'm the journalist who wrote it.) Your reaction to the unique, bizarre, and hard-to-get-your-head-around story of Christopher Knight was extremely satisfying. I'm grateful that you not only took the time to read the book, but also to create this excellent video. In fact, I was quite moved by your response. Such responses are the reason I write these stories. Yours, Mike Finkel

I bought and read this book after watching the video, thank you for writing it. You managed to get convey the experience in a fascinating and easy to read way, as well as get to the core of the experience. This year I've also read "Deep Country: Five Years in the Welsh Hills" by Neil Ansell, and while he wasn't a Hermit to anywhere near the extent Christopher Knight was, it felt like some of the things he said felt very similar. The issue I had with Deep Country though was it wasn't what I wanted from that kind of book going in. A lot of it is just talk about nature, and the stuff going on. I get it, the man lost himself there but it just wasn't that interesting when I'm looking for a book about solitude. You managed to put this experience together perfectly.

I hope he finds some form of content in our social world. Thank you Mike F., Elisha L., and most of all Chris Knight.

Just got me the book after watching your video. Thanks Elisha for this recommendation. It's purely amazing how Christopher Knight survived 27 years in the woods in solitude and describing it as the purest and most beautiful experience he was able to find himself into.
He really made question my beliefs about being alone, not having much prosperity and not grinding the 9-5 worklife mindlessly. Solely mastering the task of surviving with no industrial-made stress whatsoever and just enjoying the unconditional connection to the universe.
I'm not saying his way of living was the best ever nor should anybody live up to 30 years in the woods but i think everybody can be inspired by Chris' minimalistic and stoic approach to experience the beauty of life and i will surely reconsider my big term lifegoals and unfounded subconscious fears.

Im alone most of the time, i live in a cabin in a remote mountainy area. Atleast once a week i go to a secluded area in the woods a few miles away on my dirtbike. I pray and think about things. I truly believe in God and thats where tell him all my problems. I come out stronger and rejuvenated. The woods is a wonderful place but i probably wouldnt spend 27 years out there.
Btw im half way through the book.

Lol I always sleep for at least 11 hours a day on weekends and I usually get at least 9 hours on weekdays and I spend at least an hour a day learning about new stuff and meditating. I'm also hyperaware when I'm in public. It's a lot of mental stimulation but it's not as bad as before. That still quietness feels like the peace of heaven and when you're used to that being on earth. When you look at life you only ascribe meaning based off of pain or pleasure which is just the opposite of pain. Without suffering there isn't much desire. Definitely going to read this book so much knowledge.

  • @mclbru89

I went to a retreat a couple of years ago, all by myself in a small cabin in the woods. There was a fireplace, a sink, a bed and a table. They provided utensils and whatnot. Also healthy food was provided during the stay. I had a great time. Went there to walk in the forest and meditate.

I am half way tru the book when i came across this post. Generally I am too lazy to read and prefered audiobooks. So a book has to touch me very hard in order for me to pick it up. This one is one of those and I can tell you that it will change the way you look at the world. In a good way and you will be doing yourself a favour in doing so. Its like a book which comes your way when you struggle to find answers you ask from the universe. What you will find here is hard to find anywhere else. Thank you Mr. Frinkle for sharing with us what you learned. Thank U2.

I have the same thing in shopping centres and food shops man, it's sensory overload. I think it's just preference for mellow surroundings rather than a personality type thing with me, those places aren't pleasing whereas other shops can be nice to spend time in. I totally agree with it naturally winding down, I don't have the same response to those situations as I did in my youth. As to living on your own - I've been living on my own the last 2 years in a new country and it's certainly a strengthening experience. Peace Elisha, have a good week.

His stress levels may have been low at particular times. However he did state that when he was committing the acts of burglary he was stressed off the charts. This along with increased adrenaline and blood pressure couldn't have been good for him. Especially seeing he did around 40 burglaries a year, that's almost once a week. But I guess it worked for him in the end because he's still healthy

I feel so bad for this guy. I hate society, and what this guy did is literally the most inspiring thing I've ever heard. I'd love to disappear myself, just like he did. It's not because I'm a failure in life either. I've done alright financially, alright with the opposite sex, and alright socially in general in the past. I just don't like society. I don't like the notion of belonging to the rest of you, either literally or figuratively. To have the joy of escaping all of you for such a long time only to be thrust back into your midst so publicly would be the worst feeling ever.
