"43 Mauser" with Cast bullets

- A bit of range footage from a few years ago when I was trying some commercial cast bullets in a "43 Mauser" rifle. The rifle is a Mauser 71/84 in 11×60mm Mauser that at some point had been modified into a "short rifle" configuration. Ammo is composed of modified 45/70 brass with a commercial 380 grain cast bullet, one batch loaded with a charge of Alliant Unique and the other with Alliant 2400 powder.
Slow and methodical... just my sort of meditation!
I have so few bullets I had really had to shoot slow and only do three shot groups just to stretch them out.
I had a friend who had and shot a 43 Mauser. It was a nice rifle Would like to come across one that is reasonably priced.
Proper full military ones have certainly gone up in price but if all you want is a shooter and can tolerate a cut down one there are deals to be had out there.
Great video . I have had great 50 yard groups using trail boss powder, reformed 45-70 cases , and get this- The closest bullet mold I have for this diameter is the conical bullet for .44 caliber percussion .( Actually it was a mold given to me that was meant for a Ruger Old Army ) These bullets have the tapered end made for initial fitting into percussion cylinders, and they are a perfect fit for fitting into .43 Mauser case mouths. So between the tapered base and conical nose ,these bullets bulge out in the center to just over .45 caliber , but they swage down to bore diameter upon firing. Oh - They are close to pure lead and powder coated ,and lubed with Alox.
That is interesting. I have a couple hundred lead percussion revolver bullets around here somewhere that came with some other stuff, I should did them out and see what they measure. I think they are 200 grain, and appear to be soft lead.
Hellofa beard ya got there bud!
This was taken a couple years ago in the spring, I had all winter to grow that insulation!
Got that Kurt Russell "The Thing" look going!.
@@timothytietz9194 You have a point there!
Great video, thanks for sharing. Saw you at the Switzers action . You purchased a couple of my rifles. Thank you very much. I sold 124 in this auction.thinning out the heard.
Wow that's really serious thinning! I purchased one rifle and one shotgun. They have not arrived yet but are due soon. Was the Cooey-Carcano one of yours? Switzers seems to do quite a good job as an auction house.
Yes the Cooley carcano was mine. I had it replied Abdul added a rear site. Nice little shooter.@@314299 I still own over a hundred, mostly Lee enfields, american enfields, Ross’s, martinis and sliders.
Sorry I meant the car a o was reblued and had a new rear site added.
@@kencurtis508 The rifle arrived yesterday. Did you have the work done or was the rifle that way when you got it?
I had the rifle barrel and receiver blued and the local gunsmith installed the rear sight.@@314299
Nice group! 50 yards outs? 100?
The groups were fired at 100 Yards.
pretty cool! 2400 is what i shoot lead out of a 8mm with
I've had lots of success with 2400 when shooting cast over a wide range of calibers, it's a great cast bullet powder.
I may have to try out those loads in my m71
Might be worth a try. You have the same bullet?
The 2400 load looks pretty good, especially for 100 yards. Was the rifle made with the turned down bolt handle?
Yes, the 2400 load looks like a good one. As for the bolt handle don't think it was made with the turned down handle. It was most likely turned down at the same time the barrel, magazine and stock were shortened.
Cast Bullets you say?!?
OK! ❤❤
Cast yes but unfortunately not ones I cast.
Been quite some time since I had my71/84 out. Think I still have a few of the Hayley bullets around here somewhere.
What diameter is that bullet?
I actually found them. They are 380 grain lead conicals with a flat tip and four grease grooves. Mic out at .446. Too bad he passed on, had some interesting stuff made up.
@@slowhand1198 Do you think that was a commercial bullet mold or a custom one?
@@314299 No telling. Bob Hayley finally passed on about three years ago, but had been making odd bullets, brass and ammo since the 1960's. He could make all kinds of stuff for any caliber or type including pin fire rounds. No one could possibly fill his shoes, so the business went with him.
Any plans to load these with black powder? What mold were you using?
Regrettably I dont have a mold for this and so I was using some commercial cast bullets. I think I only got a hundred of them. No immediate plans to load black powder.
Nice older one. Not bad for its age
Yes, it's quite a decent shooter for a rifle that is so old.
That rifle shows a lot of promise. it is surprising how well they will shoot with some plain old cast bullets, it is a good feeling when what you don't know plays out so well. any plans on getting some molds for it in the future? I noticed that you used commercial bullets . again, this was a nice video, I enjoyed it vary much. Peace - Dave
When I bought the rifle both I and the seller thought it had a somewhat poor bore, to my surprise when I got it home I discovered it was just heavily leaded . After a bunch of cleaning the bore turned out to be quite good. This no doubt is one reason it shoots as well as it does. I've had this one for a few years, and have kept my eyes open hoping to come across a suitable mold, but no luck just yet.
My go to powder for 43 for hunting was SR4759... Ive used 2400. And herco...herco was really accurate..
Though i dont shoot 43 anymore.
I had a few rifles. And 4570 brass worked for me as well.
@@rodsvintagesxschannel.3095 Unfortunate but as you know 4759 has been discontinued for a long time. I believe it's closest equivalent, Accurate 5744, is also discontinued. Hopefully 2400 stays as it is one of my more relied on powders.
@@314299 if your ever over this neck of woods, have about 3/4lb sitting here of it
Maybe swap sumthin for.. As far as 2400
It works gd...i also used bluedot. Red Dot
.. But herco was the acciracy load , to be fair...trap door data is a gd start point in load development for the mauser.. My lee Dies had 4198 data in the booklet
@@314299my mk4 martini Henry was listed at Epps as a sewer pipe bore it was just 100 year old grease. I have yet to scoop up one of these mausers probably should have gotten my hands on a sporterized one back when they could be had cheap.
Awesome
Thanks.
