"That's gotta be the straightest thing I've ever done." Frickin hell Illy, way to make me laugh🤣

@@uiinpui with ya there lmao
haha i scrolled down to the comments after that one.
Lol
Lol
did anyone else's cast bring unforgivable teenage chaos to Waffle House after third night or was that just us
We had cast parties after our final show at Ihop. We would take shots with the creamer packets. We felt so bad for the already short-staffed restaurant, and gave them like a $25 tip from my table alone
I never did theater and didn't go to resteraunts(WHY NO CORRECT SPELL RECOMENDATION) with my class or group in varying events(unless you count my siblings as classmates when you're homeschooled 4 out of 5 days) but my ten year old autistic mind definitely caused a lot of pre chaos that my mom had to diffuse when I was out and about
3rd :0 anyone else been waiting for a new video for a while ? Lol
(/j , ik how hard it is to make vids !!)
i think just you lol
Yes!!!!!!! Definitely!!! It Happened To Me.
I once played an alcoholic maid that was the comedic relief, I accidentally made a bunch of parents think I was actually drunk and drinking tequila
Hey, if you were able to trick them, then that must have been good acting.
thats epic my dude. you literally tricked them into thinking you were genuinly drunk.
DAMG THAT SOME REAL TALENT-
take that as a compliment, if they thought you were really drunk that means you got skill
What play is that character in?
Being a theater kid, I can say that it’s okay to be in the ensemble.if they cast you as the ensemble, that means they see you as a good actor in that role. They see your skills in that place.
Also in my experience when they cast you as ensemble it's either to give upperclassmen a shot at bigger roles or you were a dancer first and want you to develop your voice more so it's not a bad thing
Being autistic myself, it's nice to see Illy express herself in a way that she's comfortable with. Also, I can relate to a lot of what she says, especially the whole "trying only one thing and crying when it doesn't work" thing. Not that I'm a theatre student, but that mentality can be applied to a lot of other things for us as well. Keep your options open and your head high, everyone!

@@gavrielsalonga8294 I am aware that she made another video about it. I just commented this here because the other half of my comment relates to what she said in this video.
Me 2
I only applied to one job at the time, because I was afraid that if they all said yes, I would have to reject some of them. And I was afraid that would waste their time or hurt their feelings. I had a hard time finding a job partially because of that.
I am autistic too.
I am autistic, and I LOVE her
I just need to say it! Illy and the way she paints backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous.
I love them too :)
Ahh I don't do the backgrounds!! I'm lucky to be in a place where I can hire some very skilled artists -- oskardraws and cloversandmoss! These dudes are wicked with a paintbrush, please go give them both a follow on instagram!!
@@illymation it still looks absolutely amazing 🤩

AGREED
As a fellow high school theatre tech person, this made me happy. Lots of actors that don't get big roles are like "ok I guess ensemble it is" and don't think about tech at all.
You know?
Even when it feels like you wanna slap your past self by acting badly, I have felt that too, but I... think that may not be what you needed.
Watching your videos and the things that happens in your life made me realize that, even when that doesn't justify bad actions, what you needed was a hug, you needed kind and supportive words. Not only from others, but from yourself. You needed more Mr. Hudsons in your life and I mean not just in theater clases time, and be your own mr Hudson
Oh gosh I feel this on a deep, personal level. I feel like in those moments I need to be harsh and punish myself, yet it makes me feel worse than if I was understanding and gracious towards myself.
@@cutepuddleslime8201 Yesyesyes but I’m 14 now and I feel like my future self is going to come back and slap me at any moment so can I please have a hug right now? *sniff*

@@Poppy-cw7jk I think this comment is for Illy and not an answer for my comment 😅
“there is no small people. only small roles.” make the most out of your role! you can be a very memorable part of the show.
Totally, I remember playing the crazy old uncle when we performed The Borrowers. Even though I had less than a dozen lines, I loved that role so much, and it's still one of my favorites. No matter the role, if you give it your all, it'll be a ton of fun!
The saying is “there are no small parts, only small actors” but you’re right, don’t count your lines, make your lines count.
Reminds me of when my friend and I played as dogs in "Wiley and the Hairy Man." Was pretty fun and I'm pretty sure we were memorable.
It was also the only role that I really enjoyed!
fr i remember going to watch hamilton and the person playing peggy made her intro very memorable
The among us imposter sound when illy said “theatre kids walking among us” just did it for me 😂 love the creativity, effort and thought that you put into every video!!
The sus sound works every time lol
And I oop- I just noticed-
Recently, I had an audition for Chicago and I doubted myself as I was going for a main and there were some other amazing actors going for the role, before the cast list came out I immediately doubted myself. I did get the role I wanted but just to think I'm not the only theatre kid that went through that is shocking, especially while watching this.
I just want to say thank you for this video. You really made me confident to audition for my schools musical and I got a lead role!
Congrats! What show is it?
@@Anime_theatre_lover it was Addams family ☺
The queerification of illy's channel is something I am so living for omg. "so much gender" was 10/10. Also, I'm in high school now and I've done tech for a few shows. There's something so heartwarming about the way our chaotic energy brings us together. I love going out for ice cream or whatever afterwards. We hit up coldstone after our most recent play like 10 minutes before closing and just chilled outside eating our ice cream and vibing.
No literally
As a band kid, I get the same vibe in band. I love how clubs like that at school feel like a little family after a while, because most likely you have similar interests with them and can get along well.
Lol
do you plan on showing any of these plays online?
queerification? what do you mean by that.
GAH I still cannot get over how beautiful this art style + narration is. I'm sorry for saying what a bunch of others have already said, but DAMN. I love this channel. Keep being awesome
Ye very cool & distinct work from the c👍rew
So I just did my first play, it was Bye Bye Birdie and it was amazing. I don’t care that I got chorus bc it had a perfect cast, crew, and directors. The house was packed all 3 nights and the atmosphere was like no other. I had a couple of lines but I was needed for those lines. I love what the director said on closing night, she said “It doesn’t matter if you are apart of crew or the lead you are important in this play” and it is true.
illy, I know you won’t see this but, I’ve had really bad stage freight especially when it comes to singing. I’ve been in my highschool’s theater department for 7 productions and not once had I tried out for a musical. This year it was announced that the musical was a production that I grew up with and still really love. I wanted to thank you for posting this video even though our experiences aren’t completely the same, this video was one of the factors that helped me choose to try out this time. Although I’m not sure if I’ll get casted, I’m still proud of myself for trying out and singing in front of other people. So, thank you!
I love all the references they managed to cram into a 14-minute video
A lotta work for a lotta diff gags 😂
Honestly, your Paulette audition was the most Paulette way to audition for the role. It’s almost as if *no one* watched Legally Blonde in preparation for the musical…

My biggest role I ever got was Captain Hook in a Wendy and Peter show in the 12th grade, I felt so shocked when I found out I got the part. Seeing the many more talented people who auditioned not get it, still shocked to this day
Man, theatre and clubs are the only things that i'd really want to go to American school for, but i'm in the middle of Asia with the craziest school program (and i'm also already in college). The closest thing to theatre were preschool holiday shows for parents to watch us deliver dances songs & random talents decided by teachers (and it wasn't fun). The fun stuff that only 1 singular cooking class in like 7th grade that was promised every year & never came true again

I admire that you were brave enough to expose your less proud moments when you were younger. It's already scary to put your personal stories on a public platform, but it's even harder to show your less proud moments on top of it. It also shows that you learned and matured like anyone else when you acknowledge past mistakes. Feel proud you did what plenty never had the courage to do.
Very well said!! You’re right, a lot of people never reflect on the things they did when they were younger.
I've just gotta say, thank you Illy. Thanks to you, Emirichu and a few others, I think this has gotten me the inspiration and motivation as well as SLIGHTLY over my stage fright and performance anxieties.
And because of that, I auditioned for a school play (The Wiz) and actually got the role I auditioned for (Addaperle, The Good Witch of the North)! Soon we'll be preforming for it in March and well, this is just..nice. This really did make me happy and make me a lot more confident. And thankfully I have few friends that also encouraged me.💕💕
I just started high school and since I’m homeschooled I do community youth theatre (it’s an all middle school and high school cast.) We are performing Mary Poppins jr in January and into the woods jr in June.
Edit: 8:56 that same thing happened a couple months ago when Mary Poppins was being casted. EVERYONE wanted these 2 people in the cast to be Bert and Mary poppins since last December when we were doing elf the musical jr ( including the directors) and despite there being new kids in the class they STILL got the parts
I'm absolutely screaming at the gender March Hare and, while barely recovering, you hit me with the "straightest thing I've ever done". This video killed me and then brought me back to life 😂😂😂
Is Illy trans or something?
Zombie!
watching this as a theater kid RIGHT NOW was painful ngl. this entire video is insanely accurate, from the show choices, to casting, to the zip-zap-zop section at the start 😭😭
bruh fr
Nahh the zipzapzop took me by surprise 😂
That how the theatre director took role when you signed up for drama.
She’d say your name and you had to quote a musical.
Girl this video inspired me extremely because I recently did a play and asked for a small role but for some reason was slightly disappointed with it and realised that I wanted a bigger one so for the next play I auditioned for belle in beauty and the beast and somehow actually got it!! 🎉 I’m so excited to take on this role and thank you so much for encouraging me to do so ❤. I couldn’t have done it without you because without this video I literally wouldn’t have done that audition ❤️❤️❤️
2:12 Why did this catch me so off guard! 😭💀
When i was in highschool every year we got the official licenses to broadway musicals so we could perform them. sometimes we'd perform it on a big stage and sometimes a small stage. One year we changed to a new teacher and she made us perform a children's version of a well-known musical. the children's version removed many of the most important character development songs. and when choosing that musical the new teacher also didn't think about the fact we had 3 boys in the class and a majority of the roles needed to be cast were male. the female lead even suggested we make it a genderbent version since we obviously could not fill the male roles. but yea whole musical went downhill.
Which musical was it?
What musical? (Also eyyy my old middle school would do the same thing by buying the rights to certain musicals
Which musical???
Dude what was the musical?
sounds like newsies
The chaos my middle school theater brought to Culver’s after closing night still haunts the poor acne ridden employees. They tell stories of that day like a scary tale in horror movies.
I work there. EVERYONE IN THE KITCHEN IMMEDIATELY WANTS TO DIE WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!! Thank you for sympathy!
I will never get tired of the video game, cartoon, and anime references you put in your videos. It fills my brain with extra neurotransmitters to see Sasuke sitting next to Ron Stoppable in the classroom, and then a minute later seeing the main characters from Xenoblade 3 in the theater.
I'm not even gonna lie, the advice in this video pushed me into auditioning for the production we did last year, and I got a main role, so thank you so much for being my inspiration for an extremely fun experience ❤❤❤
In my high school theater experience, I got casted as the Dormouse in "Alice in Wonderland" and had only one line to say during the whole play. 🎭🎭After that, I got a miniature trophy for taking that role. 👏👏
In middle school theater we also did Alice in Wonderland but I got casted as the narrator (Lewis Caroll) and I had bassicly a short monologue at the start of the play and a line or two at the end
I DID ALICE AND WONDERLAND TOOO i got casted as one of the flowers with one line "thats right Rosy" and to make matters worse i had a speech issue with "r". Long story short never ended up doing the play cause of covid:(
@@juniperxx that’s rough buddy
Fellow Dormouse but my drama teacher put me in a red onesie 😭
In elementary school from 2nd grade, I tried out for many roles in plays and musicals. However, I never managed to break past getting a minor role, stuck in the chorus, with like, 3 lines. However, I always persisted, and continued to try out. It took quite a while, and I always kept the sort of optimism that I would land a meaningful role in a play. Even when I had to leave for a family emergency and couldn't act in that play, I always memorized lines, practiced and repeated. But one day, I managed to land the main role. This isn't supposed to be extremely cheesy, but I just wanted to share my personal experience. I was very lucky to get that role, and it was pretty satifsying after years of minor roles.
I've always been stuck in the ensemble, too, but this year I'm hoping to get a main role since I'm an upperclassmen. This gives me more hope that maybe I can do it. :)
@@CJgreencheetah I really hope you can make it! Best of luck!
@@Extremelychubbyglutton Thank you!
@@CJgreencheetah Just get that role!
GIRL WHEN YOU SAT ON THE FLOOR AND TALKED TO THE CHAIR!
I would have assumed you pulled that on purpose and casted you immediately. That's amazing
This reminds me of trying out for our inter house vocals competition which is a capella, first year I was so nervous I completely flumped it and I didn't even try second year cause I was still so embarrassed. Third year and brought the whole package, channelling Anapantsu's Friend's on the Other Side, and I was asked to do it again for the whole final group as an example of what they were looking for on stage. I was so proud of myself and I'm not nervous about that sort of stuff any more
I’m glad my drama club has always done auditions like you do a monologue, any monologue, and then you get cast as whatever the director wants you to be. Took away a lot of anxiety for everyone.
my high school is pretty similar. we sing a song from the show and we read a monologue from the show and then they cast who they want as certain roles
I mean, it makes sense. They cast you where you think you'd be best. I've gotten minor roles and some ensemble roles in my plays and musicals.
Since we have a production each year in my class as a type of end-of-semester project, the teacher gets to know us well enough to see where the talents lie for casting, so we never really have auditions 😅
same, and a song if you want a singing part
The Zip Zap Zop joke just makes up my entire life as a theater kid. Hit the nail on the head with that one 😅
I used to do it when I did beginner theatre camps but now that I’m in the advanced classes we do “to stop the train” and a lot of tongue twisters
Felt like a blatant attack lool

The “zip, zap, zop” at the start was so nostalgic form when I did theatre haha
I love the fact that you're open about some of the crappy things you said when you were younger because I always feel really ashamed of myself for the way I acted but hearing another person talk about what they did I realized that we're all just people who are doing the best we can and sometimes we mess up
I tried out for Jasmine in middle school, and I didn't get it, I was heartbroken. I ended up as a background character who sells fabrics and my directors let me use my own knitted blankets and shawls as props ❤️ So it worked out nicely for me
The same kind of thing would happen to me in middle school, I never got the leads, and eventually stopped trying for them after too much heartbreak. But they let me make the tiaras and gowns lol. The I got my first lead in my last show there, and then two weeks into rehearsals they told me they were going to go a different way and all of a sudden I was just a partygoer 🥲
I was going through the same thought process a few weeks ago for my schools musical. That you for blessing me with knowledge.

10:40 "and guess what" an ad: "CHROMEBOOKS ARE EASY TO SET UP"
We did a “gender swapped” version of Macbeth in high school, and one of my roles was Seyton. So much gender.
I wasn’t in theater in high school but I was in band and I definitely have regrets from band. I was in concert band, which was the lowest level, for three years but I auditioned for symphonic band my senior year, which I got, but I wish I’d auditioned for wind ensemble, which was the highest level, instead. I also remember not practicing enough my first two years, which I think probably lowered my confidence and people could tell that I wasn’t practicing enough. But my worst regret from band was that I became close to one of my directors my junior year, but then, senior year, she ended up having other priorities, which I didn’t take very well, so I ignored her boundaries. And I also remember going on a band trip to Hawaii that year and having one day where I had to be around people besides her, to which I threw a fit and clung to her, so then she didn’t let me go to the luau that night. Yeah, that was tough, but I’ve learned my lesson. I would like to tell my BD sorry for what I did to her, but unfortunately, she works at a different school now, but maybe I’ll find her someday.
I love how everyone's (including ours) legally blonde went immaculately
Growing up as a shy, autistic kid, I didn't feel comfortable being around people I didn't personally know, and was always worried about saying the wrong things without even knowing it. I only had a small group of friends, but I generally felt more comfortable being by myself. However, I always found comradery in the theatre department at school. I was passionate (still am) about the arts, and being around people with similar interests as me felt like I was part of the island of misfit toys; people who just "get" you without even trying.
Being part of theatre taught me how to communicate with others, and to express myself in a creative manner. I only had supporting roles in high school, but I felt comfortable playing a character onstage. It felt like routine, I learned how to live as another person, and gained a sense of empathy for the said person I was portraying. It was basically psychology put into action.
Now I'm part of my local community theatre, and I get to meet different people with different backgrounds. I've come a long way, but I'm still willing to push myself to learn more.
That’s beautiful and I related to this a LOT. I wouldn’t even have friends if it wasn’t for theatre
I felt exactly same

I had the same feeling when it came to my choir auditions- I wanted to do them but there were so many people that I felt were “more suited” than me so I never really went for it… then senior year came and I was like “if I don’t do it at least once I’m gonna regret it” 🙃 so I forced myself to audition for a solo, I didn’t get it but I was still proud that I did it- so that 10 year feeling is so valid omggggg
That's great! I'm happy it felt good to try even if it didn't go perfectly

My theater teacher, although she was great, outright told me she typecasted me as older, “mature” women in shows. The problem was that the shows she picked only had those roles as small background characters or not at all. The biggest role she gave me was Eudora Featherstone in Miss Holmes, which I loved, but that was it. Despite all my work, I wasn’t going to get out of her typecast.
great video also great work with all the character Easter eggs X3
One production I did that was my high schools ‘best production ever’ was also Legally blonde. I got cast as Elle’s Dad and it was so fun. Everything you said about this production resonated with me.
i remember i chickened out of auditioning in the fall of freshman year. when i went to see the play, i immediately regretted everything because it was so dang good and i wished i had been a part of it. forced myself to push past the nerves and audition for every show after that! i finally got the lead in junior year and it was such an awesome experience :)
This video is toooo relatable to me omg. The amount of times I psyched myself out of trying out for roles or just putting myself out there, and then getting salty cause I wasnt given a role I wanted. The regret really hits harder than any embarrassment that couldve happened 😭😭

Loved your song "Sat On the Floor" with Caleb Hyles; you have a wonderful singing voice. ☺️
They actually watched the movie but didn’t get the characters names (Penny, Amber, and Velma)
Also it was really impressive that your theatre department got such a glow up
Considering places like Bumf**k Nowhere, North Carolina (those are in fact her words, go watch their Christmas video if you don’t believe me) the arts are pretty undervalued compared to sports
I would know, I live in a tiny town in Eastern Washington
And despite being next door to the eighth wonder if the world, we didn’t have a theatre department
Only the Missoula Children’s Theatre that would come by once a year (whose plays were super clumsily written it was painful preforming them)
Also all of Batman’s sons were always Robin
The closest would be Batgirl, Robin/sometimes Batman depending on the artist love interest
And daughter of commissioner Gordon
“And pulling little American flags out of my… the tube was still there.” That got me! 🤣

My high school did Bat Boy my senior year and I have NEVER heard of anyone else ever doing this show. My school had a hella good theater program though, and it was an ICONIC performance, even though the script was so freaking weird. Thanks again for an A+ video, Illy! 💖
Honestly I can kinda relate to doing a off the walls show. My first play was Alice in Wonderland, back when I was 13. While it was the show that ultimately made me want to pursue acting... HOLY HELL IT WAS A DRUG TRIP AND A HALF. Nowadays I just look back and go: how the hell did my teachers make any sense of this script?

For my first two years doing musicals, I had as many small rolls as I could get. I was in like... every other scene in the background. In junior year I ended up filling some of the more major side rolls because nobody tried out for them. Senior year (I will forever love my band teacher for this) he literally WROTE a musical, with a lead part for me, two other boys, and three of the girls.
I went to a small school granted, but it was really really kind of them to recognize I would forever be too scared to audition for a lead.... they knew I loved doing the musicals, so they just basically told me I had to do it. That did wonders for my confidence as a human being, and I need to remember to thank him for that.
I had different teachers for all 4 years, and I'm glad that every time I auditioned, it was with the "general audition, don't go for a certain character" mindset bc I was not trying to do that more than once a month. Auditioning was always way harder than even the time I performed a monologue from The Book of Mormon in front of a bunch of older people

Ever since, I've been in that position where the cast was only four girls (it was a college production) and I just wasn't a good fit because the role I was offered made me uncomfy so I just wasn't casted and someone *far* better for the role was put in my place. Ever since then, I've been thankful for an ensemble role and I learned to not take theatre so seriously.

One of my favorites so far was a musical in high school, along with the middle and elementary schools. Wizard of Oz. For the Kansas scenes we had a live dog. (Ernie the goodest boy) and as a crow/beautician who was a high schooler, I got to hang out with Ernie most of the time. And I did step in for our witch during a rehearsal once which was cool. (I also stepped up as a motorist during a rehearsal for clue on stage without even my director telling me to. No one was there so I did it)
9:30 This is actually pretty wholesome to me. This moment is just funny and adorable to me but I can't describe why. Probably because I've had moments like that too.
illy's vibes are so wholesome n nice, like somebody you can talk about with anything with while drinking hot chocolate

After sixth grade, I was so used to getting small parts in theatre that I just started to focus most of my fun on what Igot to do on stage. So I'd even volunteer to be in scenes they needed more people and meltiply the costume change HELL I went through. I was still sad at times when I didn't get big roles, but it did comfort me that it was mostly due to senior priority and straight up my director basically sat me down and told me I was too good at acting, and since all the plays and musicals my school did were mainly focused on comedy, they gave the other theatre kids roles that were melodramatic yet comedic, and gave me the roles people were actually supposed to feel things for.
and being Beth in my schools production of Little Women The Musical will forever be my greatest achievement.
well, that and Malachi Stack in a gender bent student lead production of The Matchmaker.
Thanks for your high school swim team video! It convinced me to join my swim team at school and this is my second season and now I am going for school records!
YOOO CONGRATS!!!! THATS AWESOME
@@illymation thanks so much! You made my day
In theater, I was cold reading a scene where my theater teacher (who everyone fears but loves) was playing my mother in front of the entire class. She told me to sit down so I sat in a pretzel on the floor instead of in the chair right next to me. She just looked down at me and didn't say anything. Everyone burst into laughter (including me). It was one of my proudest moments.
Yo I love Calebs work with Johnathan Young and his cover of meant to be yours AWESOME
This is so cool and thanks for making us feel less alone theater
I knew a girl so scared that I was constantly in fear of accidentally taking advantage of her and yet she told me she was one of the people that set up the room for the dances at highschool.
