Hello Mark. I'm fine thanks, just very short of time for the past 4-6 weeks & I've barely been out on the bike. Hopefully this'll change by mid-late March and I'll get the rides and accompanying videos rolling again.
It's a great area to cycle. In 6 weeks I'll lengthen my Sat/Sun rides & reach into 'deeper Dales' but for winter I'm sticking to 75-80 and filming shorter sections with a little more detail. I bought the jersey because it made me think of Belgian colours without being overtly 'Belgian champion'.
Thanks Sean. If I ever get fit enough then I'd love to do an extended cycle tour of Ireland. The 'Wild Atlantic Way' looks tremendous, and I remember seeing the Wicklow Gap area when the TdF was there in '98.
Are you well man? I have no idea how you did these marathon January rides. Off the scale. I have been under the weather myself recently and have finally climbed back on my my bike in 2024. Hope that all is well.
It's good that you're back on the bike Paul - just take it steady and build up again. I'm run off my feet at the minute and I've only been out 3 times in the past 3 weeks, plus a few turbo sessions to keep loose. All being well I'll be back to regular rides & videos by mid-March
thanks mate! roll on the spring weather! I rode without gloves today! I am not putting myself under any pressure this year, just going to enjoy my rides.
@@pauljones5066 That's the best way to look it. To be fit enough and well enough to get out and enjoy the rides on your to-do list - that's what it's about for me and I'd guess for most of us.
Even on a damp day it's still lovely 🙂 That left hand arch looked fun, but would be cheating for me as I ride a recumbent these days! Best regards Sarah
Haha, you'll fly through on a recumbent! I've seen luxury coaches almost roof-scraping under the main arch & causing long tailbacks so the left-hander is a great escape route for bikes. Cheers Sarah.
Love these vids when you use the chest cam. It's working very well. I've been trying to work out where your 39/27 would sit on my compact 50/34 by 32. Can quite figure it out but I do know it would feel bloody hard!
Thanks - I'll stay with this format for Dales rides, it shows off the landscape and I can still keep to compact overall running times. 39x27 is just a little bigger than your 34x24 altho' in the end I got up Burnsall Bank on 39x24 (34x21), it's not as steep or sustained as the Stainforth climb from a fortnight ago!
Well that doesn't make me feel any better, as I'd probably be going for 34/28 as a minimum on that climb! As someone once told me, don't increase your gear range, increase your strength.
@@ajollygoodchap Modern low gearing is such a positive development - I remember when my dad restarted cycling in his late 60s, he'd lost a lot of raw leg-strength but had good cardio from running. He requested 39x25 on his first road bike and the bike shop mechanic asked him if he was going to the Alps - where else would he need such a ridiculously low gear? That was the attitude of the times, thankfully we're past that today. I think I said it previously, but I'd definitely spec' 50/34 and 11-34 for a specific all-year training bike.
You're right, it's not all that steep, just the final kick near that 'SLOW' sign, and in a couple of months when it's warmer it'll feel easier still. It's a beautiful stretch of countryside, all the way to Bolton Abbey, just a shame it wasn't a bit brighter on Saturday. Road surface was shoddy though. Cheers.
That’s a great view of your ride from the chest cam Gordon👍🏻..may I ask what you use…I’m looking just for a camera to cover my safety when out on a ride and would appreciate any recommendations from you or your viewers…thanks in advance 🙏🏻
Thanks Dave. I'm using a GoPro Hero 10 which I bought in December 2021. I think they're £250-ish nowadays. The Hero 11 is a little more expensive but is supplied with Enduro batteries, which are a must-have IMO. Once when a handlebar bracket snapped the camera fell onto tarmac at nearly 40 mph and kept recording. I bought a pair of Enduro batteries in November '23 for £40 and they've transformed the shooting time and cold weather performance. I'm in 4k with anti-vibration processing, but for safety duties you could drop to 1080 and the batteries would last even longer.
@@dave136 Hi Dave, I spotted something in the latest Cycling UK magazine today about 'evidence cameras'. There's a Bullet Camera which starts at £107 but can be expanded with an external battery to 10 hour run-time for another £29. Records in 1080, uses a Sony sensor. I haven't looked too closely but here's a link : chilli-tech.com/content/pro-bullet-camera-for-cycling/
Thanks Chris. I can certainly film up & over the main Cringles road & thro' the centre of Silsden. I went home that way yesterday. Sometime in Feb hopefully.
Cheers Nick. Terrible surfaces in places - I couldn't believe how bad it was alongside Bolton Abbey. Yes, I'm running Gatorskin 23s with the mudguards, luckily the steel frame & fork have quite a bit of compliance, otherwise I'd be replacing fillings after every ride on these roads!
I’ve been put off even thinking of riding in the Dales on a weekend due to the tight roads and volume of cars, am I correct or is it no worse than anywhere else.?
The Southern Dales are very accessible and the historic/heritage sites draw a lot of extra tourists. In my experience it's not a lot quieter through the week - and we know it'll be very busy during school holidays or as the weather improves. If you're able to get out to the Dales using a car or train then there are much quieter areas than this one. The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way is worth a look - the road from Airton to Hetton & Thorpe can be very quiet. I always find the road from Stainforth to Halton Gill and along Littondale has lighter traffic than many neighbouring areas. I've ridden that section in high summer and still only seen half a dozen cars in an hour. Quieter still would be some of the gravel and forestry roads to the NE of Horton, but you'd need an off-road capable bike. It's not technical MTB but it would too rough for a standard road bike.
Excellent vlog. Reminded me of my childhood living in Burnsall. However, I was disappointed you didn't ride up 'Black Park' which is the hill from Barden towers over the tops through Embsay into Skipton? It's a bit of a leg breaker!
Cheers Jeremy. I mentioned a right turn and 'the climb to Embsay & Eastby' but nowadays I need a lower gear than 39x27 if I'm going to talk my way up it :) Cracking descent too - top bend can be a bit dodgy at winter. In spring, with my compact-equipped 'nice bike', I'll film the back road from Appletreewick, down to the river, past Barden then over Embsay to Skipton Castle for an Anne Clifford connection.
looks like that could have been a close call with the Land Rover if you were a few seconds earlier. BTW, did you do the guitar music too? 53 tooth? Racy!
Yes, the intro surf tune is me. Strats & spring reverb set to stun :)) I eased up when I saw the black 4WD but you're right, there wasn't a lot of room. The long line of parked cars were taking up most of the lane. It's odd because they're just in front of a massive car park.... maybe they don't want to pay?
I don’t believe it but the roads are dry up here after weeks of mud and parts of trees all over the roads. I’m sure farmers can’t wait to get tractors out on the roads 😵💫anyway I will be out tomorrow (Sunday) and see how far I get 👍
Sounds like a golden opportunity - you've got to make the most of it! Cycling conditions have been all over the place this month, so unpredictable. Today was meant to be sunny but the dales had other ideas.

Hello William. I'm OK just run off my feet for the past few weeks. My Feb total is less than 8 hours...crazy stuff. Things should start to ease off by late March then once I've ridden my way back in the videos should start rolling again.
Sorry I can't watch this, you need a camera with better quality recording and something that'll stop making it look as though the front end is bouncing up and down when you're climbing.
I hoped I'd made the comments constructively and not to criticise. I think the general content is interesting and better imagery might help you obtain a wider audience. A better quality camera fixed to the bike on an out front mount would probably work better to stop the bounce and you can always use a chest mounted/ handheld camera for throwing in other clips. 😀
4 WK since your last ride. I hope you are well and out and about soon.

I really like the area around Bolton Abbey.
It's great, Olga. The combination of hills, water, woods, and history make it so special. Have you ever done the classic Burnsall fell race?
Lovely location Gordon, I have been all around there today but in the reverse direction.
You can't go wrong with it and for a 75 miler it's good value.
Another good video. Did Burnsall Bank Friday. The Riverside Cafe at the bottom probably the best bacon sarnie around.
