The most dangerous job in horse racing is being a race horse. 29 just at Santa Anita this season. An average of 750 horses dead each year at tracks across the world.
Much the same can be said for all equestrian activities, even more horses out in paddocks. It's a very small percentage of all horses in work. Sometimes bad things happen in clumps, and an unusually wet fall and winter in SoCal affected the track at Santa Anita. This has been largely corrected, and I do think that too much has been made of this sad set of events. Unfortunately, on equine subjects there are some outspoken and misleading "influencers" in the social media (UA-cam, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook) whose noise drowns out the good work being done by people and organizations to make equestrian activities humane and relatively safe. Horses actually love performing, galloping and jumping when properly prepared, trained and ridden. I will never forget the whinnies of delight from my owner-trainer father's horse when he heard the squeaky ramp of the trailer being lowered before his daily trip to the racecourse for work.
I had NEVER heard of outriders and just watching them is incredible. Brave people with incredible and sharp instincts and the HORSES they ride are amazing.
Goodnight. In my country we call Outriders "Policías de Pista" In english it would be literally "Racetrack Police Officers" or "Racetrack Cops" Best regards from Venezuela.
I'm a lifelong horseman so I know the importance of a good horse to be used in certain situations. A good comparison to these horses and riders are pickup men I Rodeo. Give the rider a clean landing after flight.
I had a retired outrider horse. My husband roped off of him. My 6 year old daughter rode barrels on him. We sold him to a man that used him for a babysitter. Four kids would ride him at the same time without a saddle or bridle. We called him battleship because he was a horse and a half long and tall. He was a great horse.
Anmarie Gibbs they tried this at my families track the horse is so pumped already and there is so much other noise the horse ignores it -no hate just saying that even though it does sound logical it doesnt work
There could be a little slope look very carefully it looks like it is a slope because they would know if it was limping because when it got onto the track it’s not limping
I saw a film once where they blindfolded the horse and it get away from the handler. The horse ran right into the rail which flipped it over. It got back up and continued running then flipped again over another fence. Continued running and right into and thru a structure like a shed. After that the horse did stop running
I hate the raving industry They (many) treat their horses like crap and when the horses can’t race they usually ship em to the slaughter factory. There have been so many horses who have died. They don’t care about the weather conditions either, which is one of the reasons why so many race horses die.

I grew up on the racetrack I've been a hard Walker and I've been leading jockey in New England in the '70s riders have the most dangerous job at the racetrack not the outriders just thought you'd like to know
The most dangerous job is being the horse. Race horses are beaten and thrown on the track before they are fully grown and developed(4-5 years or 8 years for larger breads)
It is good idea using ex-race horses, like they said, but both of these horses AND their riders could use some training working cattle and they would be more in tuned together with "cornering" the runaway.
exactly what is not needed. you cannot come in and cut off the runaway. what if he goes over the rail. ducking'ndiv'n breaks legs. I ponied. you have to angle in slowly and come up along side.
All jobs on the track are dangerous! Grooms get all beat up from the horses either getting kicked, bitten, stepped on, pressed against the wall, jerking arm out of joint, you name it! I know of a groom, a young lady in her twenties, ducked under the chain to go into the stall and the two year old filly kicked her right in the face breaking multiple bones in her face and requiring re-constructive surgery. Anytime you are around 1,000 pound animals with a primitive brain and spook easily you can get hurt or killed really easily.
i used to have that too but i immediately went to the doctor when my trainer told me - you really don't notice when it is because of health reasons (she could also just have a saddle that slid to the left which i think is the case here)
Charlie Hogan It is and always has been the descriptive term used for all non-race horses on the tracks in North America. I sometimes say 'pony-horse', for those that don't know. However, referring to the "pony" or "horse" is the best way to be clear about which equine we are speaking about. However, it is used to define the horse that is used for their occupation and action: ponying, pony or ponied. I might say, 'The horse, Lava Man was a successful race horse, and now is a successful and happy pony.'
I hate idiots who have no knowledge of horse racing running their months. The term "pony" has nothing to do with the animal's size or breed. It has to do with the animal's role. Horses are racing animals. Ponies are non-racing animals.

I know I'm not the only one who does it since I picked up the habit at several stables with no ponies in sight all warmbloods.
Non-racing horses on the track are referred to as ponies. As in pony girl or having someone pony your horse. Haven’t spent much time on the backside have you?

Well considering that 99% of comments on horse videos are about how they couldn't care less about the riders and only have concern for the horses, I'd say this video hardly balances it out.
