There is no doubt that the Tchaikovsky 6 is very bleak. I gave them the first movement, but I don’t think they can handle the finale. I also agree that the Sibelius 4 is his darkest work with the brooding 7th symphony right behind it. I thought about giving them the 7th, but I’m still undecided on a performance.

Was correct the first time - MAH-ler. I think the bleakest orchestra-only piece might be the 4th (final) movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony
That and the Sibelius 4th.
