Eventually managed to start on one today (first of my life, surely not the last one). I chose the same design and it all worked out fine. After all my wife is happy with it, so : Mission accomplished!
Never made one butI have always wanted to. The long one you held up is what I want to make. Now I have an instructional video to show me how. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Ronald , you and your wife make the best team . A joy to watch you both , Ronald so appreciate the calm ,method of your teaching . Have been wanting to make a mill for a while , now I know I can . Thanks for sharing your experience and talent.👍😇🇺🇸
Hi Ronald, you gave yourself a beautiful birthday present: the first movie of many to come....Congrats for both occasions!!! Loved the movie, very instructive and useful!!!
It's a great video. The explanations in very good understandable English will certainly help even untrained people to achieve a suitable and well-functioning result when reworking. I expected nothing else but a top video. There I am directly sorry that I can hardly turn anymore. But even watching it is fun and that's why I watch your videos.
I made a jig for pushing the grinding section of the mechanism into place. I also use the Sorby tool for the Crushgrind mechanism and use it on the bottom and top. It helps a lot not to have to glue them in if you’re turning out a ton of these.
I got one of these crushgrind mechanisms from you somewhere around 3 years ago, and I still haven't gotten round to actually making a decent peppermill out of it... I should really get to it!
An excellent presentation on how to do a pepper mill and the reasons why you do it that way however one step that I think you should have mentioned whilst making the tenon for the chuck is how long you make it so that it doesn't bottom out in the chuck jaws. I would also have mentioned why you hold the drill chuck when drilling. I know it is easy to forget to say things that we do instinctively.
Thank you Ian. Good adds indeed! Don't let the wood touch the bottom of your chuck and hold your drill chuck to prevent it from coming loose from the tailstock....
Great project Ron. Lots of good tips in here. Always drill the hole first - then shape the exterior. Interesting drill bit that carved out two different diameters at the same time. ✅
Nice work! Good instruction, What dust extractor are you using? It is not so loud and we can still hear you while you are talking.. Are you using a hyper cardioid microphone as well?
Hi MacG, Sorry for my late answer. The dust extraction is an old Camvac. 2 motor driven and there is a cyclone halfway the hose. The microphone is a sennheiser omnidirectional mic...
