Thank you for putting together this video! I have an old wacom tablet, and recently bought an iPad pro. I love both, but some of my favourite work has been done on the tablet!
Thanks for the great info. I was struggling with my tablet in creating art from scratch. I hadn't thought of the organic feel. Makes a lot of sense.
Happy I can help and thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!
Amazing video. And spot ON, I do confirm this reasoning. Am a professional illustrator, and fully confirm his point here. I still believe that the best fit is the Intuos Art(or whatever the software bundle marketing naming), after using almost all sort of tablet sizes, including a cintiq. The Intuos cheapo model, but medium size, as provides a bit more precision, you can still do the sculpting mentioned, just comes handy a little bit more control out of the box for certain situations, and that can get to be important, too. It can work with an older second hand bamboo as well, medium size. There's the point which escapes my experience and is about if they are slightly improving as well responsiveness and accuracy with every generation. I'd be inclined to think so, but even so (my clearest comparison case is the Intuos ONE I still keep just for the memories (recycled the Kurta, though, first artistic tablet in my country back in '91), the graphire 4, and my today's Intuos Pro 4 Small and Intuos Pro 4 XL , the latter are extremely more accurate. I don't buy though the need of a Cintiq, after using one 12"WX for 8 months heavily), I made all 2D graphics for a commercial game, including concept art with an old graphire 1 (hmmm, no...actually the naming they had before that one for it, sorry I don't remember), about 15 years ago, and it was the size of the intuos he mentions, the small, and surely quite less accurate than today's, but also using his "sketch sculpting" method. And yeeeap, the Small size allows to set it besides the keyboard, and is tremendously more comfortable when after a heavy meal, you are way too lazy to get into the right mindset and focus that you will need, and the position, etc, with a 24" cintiq, or a Large or pro XL (my setup) model. Plus, for coloring these small ones are such a breeze. Even more, in the long run makes you as a pro more sustainable. Is not the same to replace a broken tablet like this than hey, I broke my cintiq, let's go to the bank for another 2.5k. And in the middle of a gig, you gotta replace it real fast. Bad news if you did not train your self with 70 bucks tablets. Even if you use regularly a large cintiq for speeding up production ! That's my main own point. And look at the man's video, he's producing all that (very correct anatomy, nice feel, he's like navigating creatively, having fun, etc) with just a freaking cheapo intuos 5 small, basic.
Thanks for all the great tips! Very-very helpful!
Great video, got so much for than I was expecting. Thank you!
A great tutorial. Brilliant artwork.
Love your tutorial. Yes I'm having a horrible time using my Wacom Manga tablet, I guess you're right practice will help. I feel more natural with pen & paper so maybe I will do that then scan my image in for inking & coloring. If I can master it I will get a good start on my graphic novel. A scifi-fantasy based in Australia with a unlikely hero and lots of twist & turns. Keep up the good work, hopefully I can master it too.
thanks man,I just got one of these 4 medium and I'm learning of it's ability
Thank you for the in-depth tips :)
Really helped me kick off with my own art style illustrations
I am happy to hear it. Thank you for watching this channel and for taking the time to leave a nice comment! :)
Picked up the latest Intuos small. Have been enjoying it thoroughly and recommend to anyone whose never dived into digital art. Grab a Bluetooth mouse for zoom and your golden.
Great tutorial.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make these! So many good points and advice.
I really want to get a iPad Pro.. when the 12 inch version 2 is released. But I have learned so much using a basic wacom and iPad Air 1 with Jonit stylus.
Also found myself going back to pencil and paper and water paints the last few months to reconnect with the basics.
Yes it does help to do some traditional art as well. I love to experiment with all sorts of techniques and materials. It helps us to become more well rounded in some ways. We just have to be careful to not get distracted and loose focus in that process. Good luck to you and thanks for watching!
i have tried both and drawing on the intous may be more difficult but it brings the best out of your work .....and the point that not having hundred percent precision is kinda positive since lines drawn this way turn pretty decent also tilting the intous tablet slighty upward help alot
Interesting comment on the organics of using tablet and separate screen, which I use. I find the lack of control bothers me, so it is a mind over matter issue maybe? Thanks for your time too, and great drawings. Long day of drawing fatigue is also a good observation.
Very helpful, thank you!
Great tips, thanks so much :)
I have the wacom pro , using it is like looking in a mirror and the controls seem to not be smooth what software works best i want to draw and do work on this tablet.
Awesome art as usual :) I own an Intous 2 (!) A3 tablet which I purchased used 12 years ago. It's still an awesome tablet, even if it's old. The big surface let's me use my entire arm while drawing, and my arm is never covering up any of the artwork. I must admit that it takes some time getting used to looking at something other than my hand when drawing, but the benefits are actually many with this kind of device :)
I agree as well! I haven't had a chance to use the larger version but I imagine the extra area could be great for sweeping lines. Thanks for watching!
Great timing, Robert! Just ordered a used Intuos 5 large for £85! Will be my last Wacom product if this one doesn't work for me as I've had to sell my Intuos Pro Medium and Cintiq 13HD.
I just got my first wacom small tablet.. I tried drawing a little in photoshop and thought about returning it. This video talked me out of it. REALLY appreciate the tips!
are you constantly changing the settings on your brushes? wasnt sure if thats something im supposed to do...
ctrlpaint has some presets for brushes on their basic brushes video with some good settings to start out with. Of course settings are there for you to experiment with, but I find that (personally) if I change my settings too much I usually end up unsatisfied with how my lines look.
Nice point. I subbed and liked it. I have 34 inch monitor. What size intuos pro do you recommend?
Awesome work! I just bought one and exactly it's all about the artists, you can have the best equipment, but if you have no idea what you're doing, a better device will not help you.
This is great
Will these tips work the same for a Cintiq?
Awsome channel
Great points, how can I get those awesome brush tips?
Hi! Your Video is excellent, But I think a lot of people still like Clip Studio Paint , for that kind of work ( digital painting ) . It has a lot of tools catered to that particular field which are missing from other programs.
The tablet I am using using is a XP-Pen Deco Pro , comes with both pen tilt and pressure sensitivity included. Im perfectly happy with it.
Hi Robert I get your point that the intuos due to lack of control can produce more organic lines .compared to a cintiq .and thus it is still workable ..but my point is .does Wacom Intuos gets more tiring after a while ..say half an hour ..because it does not have that direct Ness of cintiq where you have the liberty of changing hand wist angle and thus one is able to get exactly the kind of long curves as in freehand drwing which become a bit difficult on intui9s by constantly undoing.?
Also, Rob, at time stamp 11:12 with the question of bad ink line problems, the user might want to check their image size. If they're not using large amounts of pixel size, you can't get a good thick and thin pressure. Also have them check their stylus or pad's pressure settings, as well as their drawing application. I've experienced that, too, when I first started and was inexperienced with using digital drawing tools.
No problem. That was like my biggest fear, when I first started digitally. Because I would watch all the tutorials, and when I started with PainShop Pro 7, all of my lines were like 8 bit drawings from the 80s. I was frustrated for days!!!!
Hi, Tony. It's really not a matter of ideal setting. Think of it this way. If you zoom in and try to draw a line, and it looks very pixelated. Then increase canvas size or amount of pixels in your drawing.Hope this helps.
Nice.
Awesome video!! THIS is the exact style i'm training myself im nowadays. Love it!!
little question: I'm thinking about buying the Wacom Intuos Draw because it seems to be a good tablet for beginners. Is it good? I'm currently using a Medion drawing tab (only costed 20 euros so not that great quality). Am I going to feel a difference between the two? I'm really curious but als really hyped to make my own comic book.
Thnx in advance and again awesome video!! :)
Not sure about that particular tablet. You just have to read and compare the settings. I use an Intuos 4 and still love it so if it has the same specs or better than that you should be good to go. Thanks for watching!
what brush are you using for this?
On the Subject of Buying used, a lot of the time they were barely used. Many people buy a tablet thinking it will magically make them a great artist, and then give up after they can't draw with one right away. It can take months to get good at using a tablet. Either way, because of this fact, there are always people reselling these things like crazy. I got my Intous 5 Large for $200.(Worth $500 New) All Spare Nibs untouched, virtually no ware on the original Nib in Stylus, and the software wasn't even opened. Surface had zero scratches. Just gotta look around :)
Great points made here. I totally agree. Not to mention, these tablets are tough cookies anyways. I have used my Intuos 4 for years and works like a charm so used probably isn't a bad idea at all. Thanks for watching!
Robert Marzullo
And thank you for the excellent content, and taking the time to read, and comment on fan's comments :)
What res you are drawing
thks for this video. can you tell the name of the guy you mentionned in the video ? i can't hear it
this video is convenient as i recently have been looking to buy the intuos comic
Robert Marzullo Thanks, Robert! I'm hopeful this one will work as I've really went off Wacom over the years with the Surface Pro 4 and Apple Pencil being out.
awesome video...
Robert sir, can you make a video of "adding patterns" on a costume.
I see hexagon patterns shaped costumes alot in comics and illustrations. So can you please do a hexagon pattern shaped pattern video.
thanks alot
You're welcome and I will put that on the list right now. Thanks for watching!
I wish I could draw like you...
I can't wait till I get my tablet on the 18th my bday lol last time I tried, the Amazon person have me an I pad mini2 and I didn't want it but I kept it,because why not? 😂
When I zoom in my lines are very pixellated. Why is that?
May be the document size in your Photoshop may be very low res ..like 72 ppi .turn the resolution to 300 , your lines will be fine unless you are too zoomed in.
What specific Intuos tablet are you using? Art, comic, photo, or draw? I am looking into getting one for comic art but I really like this specific software you're using. I would love to know what it is.
I am using the Wacom Intuos 4 in this video and the software is Photoshop CC. Thanks for watching and good luck with your art!
I can't find the Intuos 4 on the Wacom website. I look for it elsewhere. Thank you for replying! I really enjoy your videos!
I think they call them the Pro series now. The Intuos 4 is pretty old but it still does the trick. Thanks! Glad you like the videos. :)
Okay! I'll look for it. Do you think the Intuos photo would do the trick?
Hold on and let me check. I haven't been to their site in a bit. I'll be right back........
how much is a wacom tablet
Just depends upon the model. Check out www.wacom.com and look for used models starting out. There is a comment above about used tablets worth looking at. Thanks for watching!
You've seen someone made a great artwork using a typewriter?????
you sound like daithi nogla with an american accent.
damn the atonomy is really bad, especially the 2 goblins at the right , rightshoulder of swords man , etc ..
Ward de jager shuup man. you avoided the ENTIRE point of the video to address a background anatomy sketch?
''damn the anatomy is really bad'' That's positive? Even if it was, it's the fact that's it's not the focal point of the pic - infact scratch that - he's comparing tablet performance and encouraging non-cintiq users. Sort it out buddy
You're really rambling dude. You should make some notes for yourself before you start. What are the tips? Each one in one sentence e.g. "it's not the tool it's the artist" is tip #1. The entire first 5 minutes boiled down to just that little bit (which is extremely common, well-known advice)
You also need to enunciate clearly. You're kind of mumbling your narration so it all runs together.
When you finally get to conveying some actual information it's useful (e.g rotate the canvas, tapered lines, downward pull at 11:30) but you really need to prepare and streamline.
My wife got me a Intuos for Christmas this year. At first I hated using this tab to screen pad, but after finding the right sketch tool and watching this video I am doing way better and it's starting to feel natural. Thanks a ton. :D
