I spoke with Dave Franco about co-writing The Rental with Joe Swanberg. Listen to hear what his writing process is for creating this psychological thriller. Stick around at the end of the video for my thoughts on the movie and why watching a film like this can be helpful for your writing skills.

ABOUT BEHIND THE CURTAIN
This channel is a way for me to share the best nuggets of knowledge for filmmakers I find. It's an attempt to take a look inside the greatest films and TV shows and learn from the creators themselves how they do what they do.

This channel is giving me a huge boost in inspiration. I started writing in May and almost have my first screen play completed thank you!
Congratulations! That's a great feat! I'm honored to be a part of that journey in some way.
Congratulations 🎉👏! I too started writing my script in the month of May... Still going on... I have my school and all! 10th class, you know! Managing to find time. And I do! Well, I am halfway through my script.
Congratulations once again!!! That's great!
Congrats bro
I, too, have been watching this channel for a while now and it’s such a good place to relate to the big guys and to motivate myself to write better. Most importantly it’s a good spot to get a better understanding of storytelling.
This was a great interview, awesome you got to talk to Dave about his process. Also, props for being honest about your thoughts about the film
Thanks, man! It was a cool opportunity.
Storytellers??? Planning on making a video essay on ? Cuz I'm all for it, it was such a great movie
Great job with this interview!! Your questions actually provoke deep answers and I loved your honest thoughts on the movie at the end. A good reminder to not just dismiss scripts we dont like, but to use them as a learning tool
Good to understand others' processes to help oneself on the journey!
That was a great interview! Thanks
Appreciate all your work, these video are fantastic and wonderfully educational
Hey, thanks so much! I'm glad they're valuable to you!
Thanks for your continued insightful great work!
Thank you! You've been my biggest supporter since the beginning. I always appreciate your contributions in the comments.
Behind the Curtain it’s always my pleasure to watch and comment.
You have such a unique, entertaining and informative channel.
Burning, childish question is why didn’t you give my comment a ❤️?
☮️😊😇😇🦁🦇
Hope to see more interviews such as this one in the near future. As an aspiring writer myself I do enjoy learning from others whether they be good or not.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the support, Zach! There are lots of interviews in the bank. Speaking with Terence Winter (Wolf of Wall Street, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire) tomorrow.
@@BehindtheCurtain Looking forward to that.
I'm hyper impressed by this channel, dude. Good on you.
I hope people don't take away from this that the film is bad. I've just watched it and was surprised with just how good it was. Great Job Dave Franco
My script is going great.... Thanks to your inspirational videos!!! Just need to focus on my characters... Can you give some advice on how I can build up my character...
That's great to hear! I actually have a video coming out in the next few days about how professional writers create characters! Perfect timing it sounds like.
@@BehindtheCurtain Cool! can't wait...
0:06 you look as handsome as you sound in the videos.
Thanks for the compliment!
That's dope you got to interview Dave Franco. I feel like your review of this film was unfair. It seems like you didn't like the film because it wasn't executed the way YOU would have done it. I'm not sure if you simply judged it for what it was. Just a thought.
Hey, Orlando! It wasn't meant to be a full review. Instead, I was trying to suggest how you can benefit as a filmmaker from films that you don't like parts of, using The Rental as a personal example. It's not bad _because_ they executed the film in a way I wouldn't have done it. It's more about being able to articulate why I didn't like it and how I would've done it differently. This forces me to critically think and not just right it off as a bad movie. Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for watching.
love this chanel.
That’s what’s up
Would have been good if you explained why you thought it wasn't great in further detail. I guess it's hard without spoiling the movie.
Damn bro got a Dave Franco interview for 7k views
Dave francos Voice crack made me feel human again.
But they failed to create complex characters, totally. Speaking for myself, I certainly didn't care whether they get killed or they survived. But as a whole, the movie worked well and I don't regret watching it. The expositions about the hot-headed brother, in the beginning, were completely forced. The telescope was a 'Checkov's gun that never fired' which was introduced just as a means to be able to show that the caretaker could access the house if he wanted to and that was meant to make the audience suspicious of him, I get that, but, honestly, nobody would seriously think the guy would be the weird one unless they've never seen a thriller movie before in their entire life.
I'm sure if he did end up being the bad guy you would have said the same thing. I do understand your criticisms completely but it was certainly a possibility.
2:07 I know that face
Damn you really just left the voice crack in there even after he repeated himself and then go on to talk about how you think his movie's shit after he gave his time to you. Fucking dunked on the guy.
That isn't the intention at all. We had a good conversation. Dave was able to explain his process and what he was trying to do with this film. My thoughts at the end are not meant to be a full review. Rather, I was suggesting that it can be beneficial for aspiring filmmakers to articulate their thoughts on why they didn't like parts of films and think about how they might do it differently. I look forward to what Dave Franco has in store for us next. Have you seen the film? What were your thoughts on it? Thanks for watching.
No need to feel sorry for Dave. He’s a privileged pretty boy riding heavily on his brother’s success and this film has a 5.8/10 on Imdb.
I thought the movie was great. It starts off with you thinking one thing and it being totally different. It ended nicely as well.
He copied "Vacancy" "The Strangers" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" nice one Dave
Hahaha, I think that he should've watched your videos on how to write, his movie fucking sucks
lololol
